The Box My Mother Left Behind

That afternoon, the company transaction was suspended. No employees immediately lost their positions, but lenders froze several accounts while independent examiners began tracing the funds.

Nora visited Evelyn with a court-appointed advocate. That evening, she called me from the residence.

Evelyn appeared on the screen behind her, physically frail but mentally clear.

“I did not sign that payment authorization,” she told me.

“Did you know about Hayes Family Logistics?”

“Yes. I created it.”

I struggled to understand.

“We had never met.”

“We met when you were four years old. I knew your mother.”

My mother, Laura Hayes, had raised me alone and spent most of her life working as a school archivist. She had passed away when I was seventeen, leaving me with photographs, books, and an old wooden recipe box that still carried the faint scent of cinnamon.

According to Evelyn, however, my mother had once been the financial controller who helped establish Holloway Medical Supply. She had owned twenty percent of the company, granted to her after she rescued it from an early financial crisis.

Years later, she discovered that Richard was diverting company funds into private ventures. When she refused to conceal the irregularities, he altered the ownership records and forced her out.

“Your mother preserved copies of the original agreements,” Evelyn said. “Richard never found them.”

“Why create a company in my name?”

“To hold the money that should have belonged to her. Afterward, it was meant to pass to you.”

The five-million-dollar payment was not merely an effort to hide company funds. Someone was attempting to move a portion of my mother’s stolen ownership interest through an entity bearing my identity, presumably so the transaction could later be blamed on me.

Evelyn believed my mother had hidden the evidence somewhere I would eventually recognize.

I thought of the wooden recipe box stored in the attic of the small house Grant and I had occupied before moving onto his family’s estate.

I called Grant.

“Does your father know about my mother’s recipe box?”

There was a pause.

“He asked about it after our wedding.”

“Call the police and have the house secured.”

By the time officers arrived, the front door was unlocked, the attic ladder had been lowered, and boxes had been opened across the floor.

The recipe box was gone.

An hour later, a hospital attendant brought me an envelope. Inside was a photograph of the box resting on the passenger seat of a car, along with a handwritten note from Grant.

I reached the house before my father did. I have the box. There is something inside that you need to see.

Grant called while I was reading it.

“Where are you?”

“In the hospital garage.”

“Bring the box upstairs.”

His breathing sounded uneven.

“Your mother’s financial records weren’t the only things inside.”

“What else did you find?”

“Your original birth certificate.”

I looked toward Caleb and Jonah.

“My father left before I was born.”

“That isn’t what the certificate says.”

“Whose name is on it?”

Grant hesitated.

“My grandfather’s.”

Before I could respond, he continued.

“There’s also an ownership agreement. Your mother’s share didn’t pass to one child, Laurel. It passed to her children.”

“She had only me.”

“The birth record lists a second infant.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“A twin?”

“Yes.”

A car door slammed somewhere near him, and Grant’s voice abruptly dropped.

In the background, Richard spoke.

“Give me the box, son.”

There was movement, followed by silence.

“Grant?”

No answer came.

Then Richard lifted the phone.

“You believed your signature was the trap, Laurel.”

His voice was almost gentle.

“It wasn’t. The real trap was arranged on the day you were born.”

The call ended before I could ask what he meant.
