Hidden Moral Stories

Three Days After I Gave Birth to Twins, My Husband Offered Me $150,000 to Sign Away My Babies. His Mistress and Family Laughed When I Calmly Signed—Until Page Fourteen Froze Their Accounts and Exposed a Secret Hidden Since the Day I Was Born.

Part 2 of 3

“Withdraw the complaint, Laurel. Hundreds of employees are depending on us.”

“Then provide complete records to the bank.”

“You don’t understand what you’re interfering with.”

“I understand that your family attached a corporate financial waiver to an agreement concerning my children.”

Richard had no answer. Nora identified herself and informed him that the call was being documented, and he abruptly disconnected.

For the first time since meeting the Holloways, I understood that their confidence had never come from innocence. It came from believing no one would question them.

The Reason They Needed My Sons

Before sunrise, someone attempted to access my medical chart from a public computer downstairs. The account used belonged to a hospital clerk who was not working that night.

Security footage identified Brooke.

She had searched for my discharge time and the identification numbers attached to the twins’ security bands.

The discovery changed the mood in the room. Grant’s family was not merely hoping to win custody eventually. They needed the boys removed from my care that morning.

At eight fifteen, Grant arrived with his attorney and asked to speak with Nora and me in a consultation room. His expensive suit was wrinkled, and the certainty he had carried the previous evening was gone.

“Withdraw the bank complaint,” he said. “We’ll cancel the custody agreement and increase the settlement to three hundred thousand.”

“What changed overnight?”

“The accounts were frozen.”

“That explains the money. It doesn’t explain why you needed sole custody before nine o’clock.”

Grant glanced at his attorney.

I waited.

At last, he lowered his voice.

“The company has a major transaction closing at five this afternoon. My grandfather’s trust owns the land beneath the distribution center.”

“What does that have to do with Caleb and Jonah?”

His attorney looked away.

“The trust transfers voting authority to the first male descendants of Grant’s generation,” he explained. “Until the boys are adults, their legal guardian exercises that authority for them.”

The truth settled slowly.

My sons were not wanted because the Holloways longed to raise them. Their signatures—or rather, the guardian’s signature—were required to approve a multimillion-dollar transaction.

“You wanted custody so you could control their votes.”

Grant rubbed both hands over his face.

“My father said it was the only way to save the company.”

“And the affair?”

He looked toward the floor.

“Brooke and I planned to move west after the transaction.”

“So you were going to take my sons, approve the deal, collect your money, and disappear with her.”

“I thought I could make things right later.”

“For whom?”

He could not answer.

At nine, Richard arrived with Diane, Brooke, and several relatives, carrying the signed agreement as though it were a court order.

A sheriff’s deputy met them at the secured maternity entrance.

“We’re here for the children,” Richard announced.

The deputy handed him the protective order.

“You have no authority to remove them.”

Richard stared at me through the glass.

“You planned this.”

“I prepared for it.”

“You have ruined everything generations of this family built.”

“No. I requested truthful records. Your own choices created the rest.”

Behind him, Diane began crying as she looked through the open doorway at the bassinets. When she asked to see her grandsons, I allowed her to stand at the threshold, although she could not enter or touch them.

She gazed at their blue blankets.

“I made those,” she whispered. “I wanted them to have something from our family.”

The admission reminded me that people could carry tenderness and cruelty in the same heart. Understanding that did not erase what she had done, but it prevented me from becoming hardened by it.

Before leaving, she turned toward Grant.

“Come home when you’re ready to tell the whole truth.”

Brooke was less restrained.

“You said the boys would make us secure,” she told Grant. “You promised the transaction would give us five million dollars.”

Nora immediately asked where the payment would come from.

Brooke removed a folded statement from her purse. The projected five-million-dollar disbursement was not payable to Grant or Brooke. It was assigned to a company called Hayes Family Logistics.

Hayes was my maiden name.

According to public records, the company had been established in my name six months before I married Grant.

At the bottom of the statement was the signature of Grant’s grandmother, Evelyn Holloway, the original trustee. Yet Evelyn had been living in a private care residence outside Providence and had not managed the trust personally for nearly two years.

Someone had approved the payment in her name.
