The Night My Husband Told His Mistress He Was Leaving Because We’d Never Have Children, I Was Standing Upstairs Holding The Positive Test We’d Waited Years To See — Three Years Later, Meeting The Daughter He Never Knew Existed Became The Beginning Of His Greatest Regret

Part 2 of 3

Then I remembered the empty closet and the cold silence of the house.

“I have my mother and my brother,” I replied.

My older brother, Callan, arrived that evening carrying grocery bags.

He set everything down on the kitchen counter before crossing his arms.

“I’m going to say this once.”

“Then please say it quietly,” I answered.

He shook his head.

“Your husband has the emotional maturity of a parking meter.”

Despite everything, I laughed.

A moment later, I was crying again.

He pulled me into a hug.

“You’re not alone, Eliza. You never will be.”

My mother promised exactly the same thing.

The divorce moved quickly.

Conrad wanted a clean ending and an uncomplicated beginning.

He never realized that while I signed the documents ending our marriage, I was gently resting my hand over the life growing inside me.

My attorney looked at me with concern.

“Eventually, you’ll have to tell him.”

“I know,” I answered. “But right now, I need peace more than anything else.”

The Little Girl Who Changed Everything

My daughter arrived on a rainy morning in April.

I named her Poppy June Bellamy.

She had dark curls, bright eyes, and an astonishing ability to cry louder than anyone I had ever known.

When the nurse placed her in my arms, I knew my life would never be the same.

“Hello, sweetheart,” I whispered. “You’ve been loved from the very beginning.”

Motherhood was exhausting.

It was beautiful.

It was frightening.

It was extraordinary.

Poppy adored music, disliked vegetables, and insisted on greeting every dog she encountered.

She brought warmth into every room she entered.

As she grew older, I gradually rebuilt my own life.

Before my marriage ended, I had worked as an interior designer. After Poppy was born, I opened a small studio of my own.

Business was slow at first.

Then an organization dedicated to helping struggling families asked me to redesign one of their community centers.

I created welcoming spaces filled with light, comfort, and warmth.

That project changed everything.

For the first time in years, I felt strong again.

The Evening Fate Brought Us Together Again

Two years later, the organization invited me to a charity gala at the Grand Alder Hotel.

At first, I declined.

Eventually, the director convinced me to attend.

“You built this place,” she said. “You belong there.”

Poppy insisted on wearing a yellow dress and sparkling shoes.

“These are lucky shoes,” she informed me.

I smiled.

“Then I suppose we should bring them.”

The ballroom was magnificent.

Music drifted through the air while sunlight poured through the tall windows.

Then I heard someone say my name.

“Eliza?”

I turned around.

Conrad was standing there.

Beside him stood Taryn.

His eyes moved slowly toward Poppy.

Then he froze.

Poppy wrapped both arms around my leg.

“Mama, who is that man?”

Conrad looked as though the ground had disappeared beneath him.

“What’s her name?” he asked.

“Poppy.”

“How old is she?”

Before I could answer, Poppy proudly announced, “I’m almost three years old.”

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, they were filled with emotion.

The Question He Had Waited Years to Ask

Later that evening, Conrad found me standing near one of the windows.

Poppy was happily eating cookies with Callan nearby.

Conrad took a deep breath.

“Is she my daughter?”

I met his eyes.

“Yes.”

He gripped the back of a chair.

“You already knew when I left?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I thought carefully before answering.
