The Night My Husband Told His Mistress He Was Leaving Because We’d Never Have Children, I Was Standing Upstairs Holding The Positive Test We’d Waited Years To See — Three Years Later, Meeting The Daughter He Never Knew Existed Became The Beginning Of His Greatest Regret

Part 1 of 3

The Night I Finally Chose Myself

The evening I discovered I was going to become a mother, my husband was downstairs preparing to leave me for another woman.

I was standing in the bathroom of our house in Seattle, Washington, staring down at the small white test in my hands. My heart pounded so loudly that I could hear it echoing in the quiet room.

For years, I had hoped for this moment.

There had been endless appointments, countless tears, difficult conversations, and more disappointments than I cared to remember.

Then, finally, I saw two lines.

I laughed.

I cried.

Then I stood perfectly still, unable to believe that the miracle I had been praying for had finally arrived.

A baby.

Our baby.

I slipped the test into the pocket of my robe and hurried toward the stairs.

I wanted to tell my husband, Conrad Bellamy.

I wanted to see joy on his face.

I wanted him to wrap his arms around me and tell me that every difficult moment had been worth enduring.

Then I heard his voice.

“I’m telling her tonight, Taryn. I’ve already spoken with my lawyer.”

I stopped moving.

Taryn Mercer.

The elegant executive from Conrad’s company.

The woman who had visited our home many times.

The woman I had trusted.

My hand instinctively moved to my stomach.

Then Conrad spoke again.

“I can’t spend the rest of my life waiting for a family that may never happen. I want a fresh start.”

My heart sank.

The test felt heavier in my pocket.

I could have walked downstairs.

I could have told him the truth.

Instead, I remained where I was.

Then I heard the final words.

“I’m choosing you.”

At that moment, everything changed.

The Conversation That Ended a Marriage

A short while later, Conrad walked into our bedroom.

His expression was solemn, but I could tell he had rehearsed this moment many times before.

“Eliza, we need to talk.”

I looked directly at him.

“No,” I said quietly. “You need to talk. I’m simply deciding what happens next.”

His eyes widened.

“You heard everything?”

“Enough.”

He lowered his gaze.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I let out a soft laugh.

“People always say that after the damage is already done.”

He sighed deeply.

“I’ve been unhappy for a long time.”

“So have I.”

“You never said anything.”

“You stopped listening long ago.”

For the first time, he seemed uncertain.

He had expected tears.

He had expected anger.

Perhaps he had even expected me to beg him to stay.

Instead, I simply stood there with one hand resting against the pocket that held the greatest secret of our lives.

His eyes drifted downward.

“What’s in your pocket?”

I wrapped my fingers around the pregnancy test.

For a single moment, I almost told him.

I remembered the young man who had once held my hand and whispered that one day we would bring our child home.

But that man no longer existed.

The man standing before me had already chosen someone else.

“Nothing that concerns you anymore,” I replied.

His face turned pale.

“You’re not going to fight for us?”

“There is nothing left to fight for.”

The following morning, he packed his belongings and left.

The Promise I Made to My Child

Two weeks later, my doctor confirmed what I already knew.

I was pregnant.

The tiny heartbeat filled the room.

I burst into tears.

The doctor smiled gently.

“Do you have people around you who will support you?”

I almost answered automatically.
