I Begged My Husband Not To Leave Me Alone While I Was In Labor, But He Chose His Mother’s Birthday Party Instead—Forty-Eight Hours Later, He Returned Home To Find My Seventy-Year-Old Veteran Father Standing At The Door, Holding Divorce Papers In One Hand And The Truth In The Other

Part 2 of 3

“I’m on my way,” he said.

A Father’s Arrival

Nathaniel Mercer arrived before sunrise.

At seventy years old, he still carried himself with the quiet confidence that had defined his decades of military service.

The moment he stepped into his daughter’s room, his heart broke.

Elaina looked exhausted.

Her face was pale, and dark circles surrounded her eyes.

Beside her rested a tiny baby girl wrapped in a white blanket.

The little girl was sleeping peacefully.

Elaina slowly opened her eyes.

“Dad?”

He took her hand.

“I’m here.”

Her voice trembled.

“I tried to call him.”

Nathaniel nodded gently.

“I know.”

“I begged him not to leave.”

“I know that, too.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I thought things would eventually change.”

Her father carefully adjusted the blanket around his granddaughter.

“You were never supposed to carry all of this alone.”

“I didn’t want anyone to know how unhappy I was.”

His eyes softened.

“Elaina, being disappointed in someone else’s choices is very different from being disappointed in you.”

For the first time in years, she allowed herself to cry openly.

The Celebration Across Town

While Elaina fought through the longest night of her life, Colin sat comfortably inside an elegant private dining room.

His mother, Sylvia Mercer, laughed happily as relatives gathered around the table.

Several people complimented Colin.

“You’ve always been devoted to your family,” one guest said.

He smiled proudly.

His phone vibrated several times in his pocket.

He ignored every call.

Later, Sylvia noticed.

“Is Elaina trying to reach you?”

He rolled his eyes.

“Probably.”

His mother shook her head.

“Young mothers worry too much.”

“That’s exactly what I told her.”

He remained there for dinner.

He remained there for dessert.

He remained there while doctors worked desperately to protect his wife and child.

The following morning, he finally checked his phone.

He saw dozens of missed calls.

Several had come from the hospital.

One had come from emergency services.

Another had come from an unfamiliar number.

For the first time, uneasiness settled into his stomach.

Everything Had Changed

Two days later, Colin finally returned home.

He expected tears.

He expected an argument.

He expected forgiveness.

Instead, he found several dark vehicles parked along the street.

People were carrying boxes from the house.

Confused, he stepped forward.

“What’s going on?”

The front door opened.

Nathaniel Mercer walked outside carrying a folder.

Colin forced an awkward smile.

“Sir, I wasn’t expecting you.”

Nathaniel’s expression never changed.

“That much is obvious.”

“I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”

“No, Colin. There hasn’t.”

The older man slowly walked down the front steps.

“My daughter asked for help. You left.”

Colin swallowed nervously.

“I didn’t realize the situation was so serious.”

Nathaniel opened the folder.

“Her doctor explained the risks weeks ago.”

“I know, but—”

“Elaina explained them to you.”

“I know.”

“Emergency responders documented everything.”

Colin’s face became pale.
