I Begged My Husband Not To Leave Me Alone While I Was In Labor, But He Chose His Mother’s Birthday Party Instead—Forty-Eight Hours Later, He Returned Home To Find My Seventy-Year-Old Veteran Father Standing At The Door, Holding Divorce Papers In One Hand And The Truth In The Other

Part 1 of 3

The Night I Learned That Love Should Never Have to Be Begged For

Elaina Mercer never imagined that the most frightening night of her life would begin in the middle of her own kitchen.

The first wave of pain struck just after six o’clock.

One moment, she was pouring herself a glass of water in the comfortable home she shared with her husband on the outskirts of Asheville, North Carolina. The next, the glass slipped from her fingers and shattered across the floor.

She immediately pressed a hand against her stomach.

Their daughter was not due for another two weeks, but something felt terribly wrong.

Her husband, Colin Mercer, barely looked up from his phone.

He was adjusting his tie before leaving for his mother’s sixty-fifth birthday celebration.

“Colin,” Elaina whispered. “I think something is happening.”

He frowned impatiently.

“What do you mean?”

Another sharp pain spread through her body.

“I need to go to the hospital.”

Instead of concern, she saw irritation in his eyes.

“Tonight?”

She stared at him.

“Of course tonight. Something doesn’t feel right.”

He picked up his car keys from the kitchen counter.

“Elaina, can’t this wait a few hours?”

She could hardly believe what she was hearing.

“No, it can’t.”

His expression darkened.

“My mother’s party has been planned for months.”

“Our daughter is coming.”

“You’re probably overreacting.”

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“Please don’t leave me here alone.”

He sighed dramatically.

“My mother only celebrates her sixty-fifth birthday once.”

Then he opened the front door and walked away.

Left Alone

The sound of the closing door echoed through the house.

Elaina stood frozen for several seconds before another wave of pain forced her to lean against the counter.

She called Colin.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Her breathing became uneven as she slowly lowered herself onto the floor.

The baby’s movements felt different. Weaker.

That frightened her more than the pain itself.

With trembling fingers, she called emergency services.

“Please help me,” she whispered. “I’m thirty-eight weeks pregnant, and I think something is wrong.”

The operator spoke calmly.

“Stay with me, ma’am. Help is already on the way.”

Elaina tried to respond, but her vision blurred.

The room seemed to spin around her.

The last thing she remembered was hearing footsteps rushing toward her.

Then everything faded into darkness.

The Unexpected Phone Call

Doctors and nurses at Blue Ridge Regional Medical Center moved quickly.

Everyone understood that every minute mattered.

While Elaina received treatment, a nurse searched her medical file for an emergency contact.

Colin’s number appeared first.

She called.

No answer.

She called again.

Nothing.

Then she saw another name.

Nathaniel Mercer.

Father.

The nurse dialed immediately.

A calm, commanding voice answered after the second ring.

“Nathaniel Mercer speaking.”

“Sir, I’m calling from Blue Ridge Regional Medical Center. Your daughter has been admitted unexpectedly, and we need a family member here immediately.”

There was a brief silence.

Then the man’s voice became very quiet.

“Tell me one thing.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Is my daughter alive?”

“Yes, she is receiving care now.”

“And the baby?”

“The doctors are doing everything possible.”

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

For years, Elaina had protected her husband from criticism.

She had insisted that things would improve.

She had always believed patience would be enough.

Now she was lying in a hospital bed because the man who had promised to protect her had decided that a dinner party mattered more.
