Hidden Moral Stories

At 12:07 A.M., My Mother-in-Law Hid Something in My Carry-On and Whispered, “Call Airport Security at Six.” I Pretended to Sleep—Unaware That My Bedroom Camera Had Captured the First Clue to My Husband’s Missing Millions

Part 2 of 3

Mills asked whether Andrew had ever threatened me directly. I thought of the messages he had sent, the comments he made whenever I questioned a business decision, and the way he liked to suggest that I could lose more than money if I stopped cooperating.

“Not in a way that would sound serious if I repeated it to someone else,” I said. “He prefers to make financial threats.”

I showed Mills the text from two days earlier.

Sign the settlement agreement, Lydia. Otherwise, things could get very ugly.

He read it, then looked at me.

“They’re trying to make you afraid enough to give up your shares.”

“That’s what I think.”

He nodded once.

“Then we’ll make sure the attempt is documented properly.”

By 4:30, the officers had completed their work. I gave a formal statement, sent copies of the recording to the detective, and saved another copy with my attorney. I left the original suitcase where the officers had secured it and packed a second bag with what I needed for the trip.

I wore a cream-colored pantsuit and pinned my hair back. I didn’t feel brave. I felt tired, alert, and strangely calm, as if my mind had finally stopped arguing with the facts.

At 5:15, Andrew walked into the kitchen. He was already dressed, and his cheerfulness seemed too polished to be natural. He poured coffee into a mug and leaned against the counter.

“Big day, sweetheart?”

“Very big.”

He watched me over the rim of his cup.

“Still planning to fight me over the company?”

I set my mug down.

“Are you worried?”

He laughed softly.

“I’m worried you’ll embarrass yourself.”

A moment later, Patricia entered wearing pearls and a cream sweater, her hair neat as though she had already been photographed for a holiday card. She glanced at my new bag, then at Andrew.

“Lydia, darling, are you certain you packed everything?”

“Everything I need.”

She smiled.

“I hope your trip is unforgettable.”

“I’m sure it will be.”

Andrew’s eyes held mine for a second too long. I wondered whether he knew what Patricia had done, or whether he was simply waiting for the call he expected to receive from the airport. Either way, I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of seeing me tremble.

I left the house at 5:48. The sky had just begun to lighten, and the windows along the street reflected the first pale strip of morning. A few minutes later, Andrew’s dark sedan appeared in my rearview mirror, with Patricia in the passenger seat. They followed me all the way toward the airport.

They probably thought they were on their way to watch my life come apart.

At 6:02, Andrew made an anonymous report to the airport, describing a woman who matched my appearance and claiming she was traveling with a concealed firearm. The call went into the same reporting system the officers had already been told to monitor. At 6:19, while I was still in the car, my phone buzzed.

Security might have a few questions for you. Don’t make a scene.

Then another message arrived.

Maybe now you’ll understand who controls this family.

I forwarded both messages to Detective Mills, put my phone away, and walked into the terminal.

For the first time in seven years, I didn’t spend the next few minutes wondering what Andrew might do. I started wondering how he planned to explain what he had already done.

At the Airport

At 6:37 a.m., Andrew and Patricia entered the terminal. I saw them from the airline check-in area, where I was standing beside a pillar with my second bag at my feet. Patricia noticed me first. Her face brightened into the broad, sympathetic smile she used whenever she wanted strangers to assume she was the kindest person in the room.

Andrew adjusted his jacket and looked toward the security area.

Two uniformed airport officers approached me.

“Mrs. Whitaker?”

“Yes.”

“We need to speak with you about a report we received.”

Patricia hurried forward, one hand lifted toward her chest.

“Oh, heavens, Lydia, what have you done?”

Andrew shook his head as if he had spent years trying to help me.

“I warned her she’d eventually get herself into serious trouble.”

I didn’t answer. Patricia stepped closer to the officers.

“She hasn’t been herself lately. We’ve been terribly concerned.”

The officer looked at her.

“Ma’am, how did you know what this conversation was about?”

Patricia stopped mid-breath.

“I—I assumed.”

Andrew tried to steer the moment back toward his version of events.

“Is this really necessary? My wife has obviously made some poor decisions.”

The officer held out one hand.

“Sir, please step aside.”

That was when Detective Mills appeared with another investigator. He did not hurry. He walked up to us carrying a folder, and his expression was steady enough to change the air around the small group.
