Happy Soul Moral Stories

“YOU’RE NOT COMING OUT UNTIL YOU LEARN WHO’S IN CHARGE!” My Husband Snapped as He Left Me in Our Backyard, Seven Months Pregnant. His Mother and Sister Sat Nearby, Laughing While I Begged Him to Let Me Go. “GO AHEAD AND TELL SOMEONE! WHO’S GOING TO BELIEVE YOU?” He Sneered. They Had No Idea I’d Hidden My Phone Beneath the Soil. When I Finally Reached It, I Secretly Called 911. Minutes Later, a Voice Whispered, “MA’AM, WE HAVE YOUR LOCATION. DON’T LET HIM KNOW WE’RE COMING.” Then My Husband Heard Something at the Front Gate—and His Smile Vanished.

Part 2 of 3

“I’m not arguing with you. I’m asking you to call my doctor.”

“You can call whoever you want after you apologize.”

Loretta appeared behind him.

“Don’t let her manipulate you. She’ll have the whole neighborhood thinking you’re some kind of monster.”

He looked down at me.

“See? This is why we can’t trust you to tell people what happens in this family.”

The words stayed with me long after they went inside.

I thought about the dinner parties, the jokes about my memory, and the way Garrett always told friends I became confused under stress.

He wasn’t simply trying to win an argument.

He was trying to make sure that if I told anyone what he’d done, they’d question my account before they questioned him.

I moved my fingers toward the phone again.

The recording had stopped. I couldn’t tell whether the battery was low or whether I’d accidentally touched the screen.

I began another recording.

A few minutes later, Garrett came out carrying a blanket.

For one hopeful moment, I thought he’d finally decided to help me.

He placed it on the grass beside me.

“You can have this when you agree to stop fighting me.”

I looked at the blanket.

“I need to get out, Garrett.”

He sighed.

“Then say what I want to hear.”

I didn’t answer.

He walked away, leaving the blanket where I couldn’t reach it.

That night, I listened to the porch boards creak whenever someone came outside. I counted the sounds of passing cars beyond the fence and wondered how many people were going home to ordinary dinners while I remained trapped in my own backyard.

At some point, I felt the baby move.

It was faint, but unmistakable.

I closed my eyes and concentrated on staying awake.

I had to find a way to call for help.

PART 2 — THE VOICE BENEATH THE SOIL

FIVE PRESSES

The next morning, Garrett came outside wearing his work boots and a freshly washed shirt.

That detail has never left me.

He had slept in our bed, showered, eaten breakfast, and dressed for the day while I remained trapped in the yard.

To him, what was happening had become part of the household routine.

Delia was sitting in her chair again. Loretta stood near the kitchen door, holding a mug.

“Morning,” Garrett said, as though we were meeting over coffee. “Ready to be reasonable?”

I could barely lift my head.

“Please call an ambulance.”

His expression tightened.

“We’re not doing this again.”

He crouched beside me.

“All you have to say is that you understand why I had to teach you a lesson.”

“I understand that you’re angry.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

I swallowed.

“I’m scared something’s wrong with the baby.”

He stood up.

“Then you should’ve thought about that before you pushed me this far.”

He walked toward the porch.

I watched his boots disappear from view.

Then I moved my fingers toward the hidden phone.

I’d practiced the emergency shortcut before. I couldn’t be certain the call would connect or that the dispatcher would understand what was happening, but I knew I couldn’t wait any longer.

I pressed the side button five times.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

I could hear Delia complaining that the heat was ruining her shoes.

Then a faint voice came from beneath the soil.

“911. What’s the address of your emergency?”

My throat tightened.

I whispered our street address as clearly as I could.

“I’m pregnant. My husband has me trapped in the backyard. I can’t get out.”

The dispatcher asked whether I was in immediate danger and whether the person responsible was nearby.

“He’s on the porch,” I whispered. “His mother and sister are here, too. Please hurry.”

“We have your location information, ma’am. Help is being sent. Can you keep the line open?”

“Yes.”

I couldn’t risk saying anything else.

I left the phone where it was and closed my eyes.

For the first time since Garrett had brought me outside, somebody beyond that fence knew where I was.

THE LAST THING GARRETT SAID

Garrett came down the steps carrying a plastic pitcher.

He stopped beside me.

“You’re getting awfully quiet. Maybe we’re finally making progress.”

I stared at the grass.

“Garrett, please.”

“Please what?”

“Let me out.”

He looked back at his mother.

“Still hasn’t learned.”

Loretta folded her arms.

“She’ll tell everybody some ridiculous story once you let her go. You know that.”

Delia laughed.

“Who’s going to believe it? Garrett’s been telling people for months that she gets confused.”

My stomach turned.

There it was again.

The explanation they’d prepared for anyone who questioned them.

Garrett lowered his voice.

“Listen carefully. When you come inside, you’re going to tell people you got upset and needed time to calm down. You’re not going to embarrass this family with another one of your stories.”

I looked up at him.

“And if I tell the truth?”

His face hardened.

“Then you’ll find out how many people actually believe you.”

I said nothing.

The emergency call was still connected.

I could only hope the dispatcher had heard him.

A few minutes later, a car slowed on the street.

Garrett turned toward the driveway.

“Delia, see who that is.”

She rose from her chair, but before she reached the gate, a man’s voice called from the other side.

“Sheriff’s office! We need everyone to stay where they are!”

Garrett froze.

Loretta stepped off the porch.

“What on earth is going on?”

Two deputies entered through the side gate. One looked toward the house while the other stopped immediately when she saw me.

“Ma’am, can you tell me your name?”

My voice barely worked.

“Hannah.”

She crouched beside me.

“Hannah, I’m Deputy Miller. We’ve got paramedics coming. How far along are you?”

“Thirty-one weeks.”

Her expression became more serious.

“All right. We’re going to get you out carefully. Try not to move until we can help you.”

Behind her, Garrett began talking rapidly.

“This is a misunderstanding. My wife gets overwhelmed sometimes. We were trying to help her calm down.”

Loretta stepped forward.

“Officer, I’m his mother. She’s been very emotional throughout this pregnancy. Nobody meant any harm.”

Deputy Miller looked over her shoulder.

“Ma’am, please step back.”

Delia started crying.

“We didn’t do anything! We were just sitting here!”

The second deputy separated them and began asking questions.

Garrett kept insisting that I had exaggerated the situation.

Then Deputy Miller asked me whether I’d called 911.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“Where’s your phone?”

I moved my right hand slightly.

“Under the dirt. Beside my shoulder.”

She looked at the exposed edge of the waterproof pouch.

“All right. We’ll take care of it.”

Garrett stopped talking.

THE RECORDINGS

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

They worked with the deputies to free me without putting unnecessary pressure on my body. When they finally lifted me onto a stretcher, I was shaking too badly to sit upright.

A paramedic checked my vital signs and asked about the baby’s movements.

“She moved last night,” I whispered. “But not as much as usual.”

“We’re taking you to the hospital now. They’ll check both of you.”

As they prepared to move me, I looked toward the porch.

Garrett was standing beside a deputy, his hands restrained behind his back.

He wasn’t shouting anymore.
