Part 2 of 3

“The central table?”

“Yes, sir. The chairwoman of Bellamy Strategic Holdings specifically requested your presence.”

Trevor could hardly contain his excitement.

For six years, investment funds connected to Bellamy Strategic Holdings had supported his company.

Whenever a major project stalled, new financing seemed to appear.

When payroll became difficult, an emergency investment arrived.

When a commercial property threatened to overwhelm the company’s finances, another Bellamy-controlled fund stepped in.

Trevor believed these arrangements were the result of his negotiating skills.

He had never suspected that I had approved the assistance.

His mother’s financial troubles had also been quietly resolved through my resources.

Kelsey’s struggling clothing boutique had received startup financing from a company I controlled.

Even Trevor’s father, Howard, had benefited from a charitable foundation associated with my family during an expensive medical treatment.

I had never expected gratitude.

I had simply hoped they would eventually treat me with kindness.

At the central table, Camille leaned toward Trevor.

“This could be the biggest night of your career.”

He smiled.

“Once the new funding is secured, everything will finally fall into place.”

“Including us?” she whispered.

He reached for her hand.

“I’ll speak to my attorney tomorrow. Mallory won’t make things difficult.”

Beverly overheard them.

“Offer her a reasonable settlement and let her go. She’ll be grateful for whatever you give her.”

Howard shifted uncomfortably in his chair.

“You shouldn’t speak about her like that.”

Beverly waved him away.

“Oh, please. That girl had nothing before she married Trevor.”

Howard looked down at the table.

He said nothing more.

He had spent years choosing silence.

And that evening, his silence would finally become impossible to ignore.

The Woman Who Walked Down the Grand Staircase

At 9:45 p.m., the orchestra stopped playing.

The ballroom lights dimmed slightly.

A large screen behind the stage displayed the Bellamy Strategic Holdings emblem.

The event’s host stepped toward the microphone.

He spoke about the organization’s charitable investments in community hospitals, affordable housing, and educational programs throughout the Southeast.

Then he smiled.

“For many years, the chairwoman responsible for directing these initiatives has preferred to remain outside the public spotlight.”

Guests began whispering.

“Tonight, she has graciously agreed to make her first public appearance.”

At the top of the ballroom staircase, the doors opened.

I stepped forward.

My emerald gown caught the light as I began descending.

My grandmother’s necklace rested against my collarbone.

Two members of the event’s security team followed at a respectful distance.

I wasn’t thinking about revenge.

I was thinking about the woman who had stood alone in her kitchen three hours earlier, wondering why she wasn’t considered worthy of standing beside her own husband.

Halfway down the staircase, I looked toward the central table.

Trevor was staring directly at me.

He rose so suddenly that his chair tipped backward.

Camille withdrew her hand from his arm.

Beverly’s expression changed from confusion to disbelief.

Kelsey lowered her phone, then quickly raised it again.

Trevor took one uncertain step forward.

“Mallory?”

I continued down the stairs.

The host turned toward me with a welcoming smile.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the chairwoman of Bellamy Strategic Holdings, Ms. Mallory Bellamy.”

The ballroom erupted in applause.

I walked onto the stage and waited until the room settled.

Then I approached the microphone.

“My grandmother taught me that financial success doesn’t make someone honorable. It simply gives them more opportunities to show who they really are.”

Trevor moved away from his table.

“Mallory, we need to talk.”

I looked at him calmly.

“We will, Trevor. But first, there are a few matters our investors deserve to understand.”

The Financial Records That Changed Everything

A presentation appeared on the screen behind me.

The first slide showed the history of Bellamy’s investments in Ashford Development Group.

Trevor stared at the figures.

I explained how several investment funds under my authority had supported his company during periods of serious financial difficulty.

Then the presentation moved to the results of a recent independent audit.

“During a routine review, our financial team identified several transactions that required closer examination,” I told the audience.

The screen displayed payment summaries, loan agreements, and internal correspondence.

Some consulting fees had been transferred to a business associated with Camille.

Other transactions had been recorded under descriptions that did not match the supporting documents.

Several financing arrangements included guarantees that had not been properly approved.

Camille turned toward Trevor.

“You told me those payments had been cleared by the board.”

He leaned closer.

“This isn’t the place to discuss that.”

Adrian joined me onstage carrying a leather portfolio.

“Our review also identified an attempted use of assets connected to the Bellamy family trust as security for a private financing arrangement,” he explained. “Those assets were not available for that purpose.”

Trevor shook his head.

“There has to be some mistake.”

Adrian opened the portfolio.

“We have the correspondence, transaction history, and supporting records. The relevant parties will have an opportunity to respond through the proper legal process.”

Then he presented one document that made my hands grow cold.

It contained a signature resembling mine.

But I had never signed it.

A verified audio recording followed.

Trevor’s voice filled the room.

“Mallory never reads those complicated agreements. Just tell her they’re routine property documents. She’ll trust me.”

I had listened to the recording before.

Still, hearing his voice again brought back years of memories.

The man who once promised to protect me had apparently been relying on my trust to secure documents I didn’t fully understand.

Then Camille stood.

She reached into her handbag and removed a small USB drive.

“Adrian, I have additional records you should review.”

Trevor turned toward her.

“Camille, don’t.”

She stepped away.

“You were preparing to make me responsible for decisions you approved.”

She handed the drive to Adrian.

Then she looked directly at me.

“Mallory, there’s something else. Trevor had been collecting information about your personal affairs. He wanted to challenge your ability to manage financial decisions so he could gain greater control over your assets.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

I had expected to uncover dishonesty.

I had not expected to discover how far my husband had been willing to go.

I looked at Trevor.

For the first time that evening, he couldn’t meet my eyes.

The Family That Suddenly Remembered I Belonged

Beverly hurried toward the front of the ballroom.

“Mallory, sweetheart, surely we can discuss this privately. We’re family.”

I turned toward her.

“Were we family when you told me I wasn’t good enough to attend tonight?”
