Part 2 of 3

“The Marriott.”

“Which Marriott?”

His breathing changed.

“Claire, what is this?”

I looked down at Lily’s face.

“Who was the woman last night?”

“There wasn’t a woman.”

“I heard her.”

“You heard the television.”

“Then why won’t you tell me which Marriott?”

He sighed.

“I’m not doing this while you’re in the hospital.”

“Neither was I.”

That came out before I had time to think about it.

Ethan went quiet.

Then his voice changed.

Softer.

The voice he used when he wanted me to feel unreasonable.

“You just had a baby. You’re exhausted. We’ll talk when I get home.”

“When is that?”

“Probably Sunday.”

It was Friday.

I closed my eyes.

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

He seemed relieved.

“Try to rest.”

Then he hung up.

I didn’t call him again.

Instead, I opened our banking app.

I wasn’t even sure what I was looking for.

Maybe a restaurant charge in Chicago.

A hotel deposit.

A plane ticket.

Anything.

Most of our everyday spending looked normal.

Then Lily woke up, and a nurse came in, and I put the phone away.

For the next few hours, I tried to concentrate on my daughter.

I almost managed it.

Then my mother called.

My Mother’s House Had Been Transferred

Mom’s voice sounded strange.

Not frightened.

Controlled.

That was worse.

“Claire, is Nina still there?”

I looked across the room.

Nina was folding the tiny clothes we’d brought for Lily.

“Yes.”

“Put me on speaker.”

I did.

“What’s going on?”

Mom took a breath.

“I’m at Daniel Price’s office.”

Daniel had handled my parents’ legal matters for years.

After my father died, he’d helped Mom update her will and organize the paperwork for her house.

“Why?”

“Because I got a fraud alert from my bank this morning.”

Nina stopped folding.

Mom continued.

“It was connected to the house.”

My mother’s house was a two-story brick home in Worthington that she’d owned for almost thirty years.

My father had paid off the mortgage before he died.

“What kind of fraud alert?”

“Someone borrowed money against it.”

I sat up too quickly.

Pain pulled through my abdomen.

“What?”

“Two hundred eighty thousand dollars.”

Nina crossed the room.

“Margaret, are you sure?”

“Daniel is looking at the paperwork right now.”

I shifted Lily carefully in my arms.

“How could someone borrow against your house?”

Mom didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said something I still remember word for word.

“Because apparently I don’t own it anymore.”

I stared at the wall.

“What are you talking about?”

“According to the county records, I transferred it six weeks ago.”

“To who?”

“A private company.”

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

My voice got louder.

Lily moved against my chest.

I lowered it again.

“Then it’s a mistake.”

“Claire.”

Mom stopped.

“Your signature is on the transfer too.”

I didn’t say anything.

Nina sat down beside me.

Two years earlier, when Mom had needed surgery, she’d given me temporary authority to handle certain financial matters if she couldn’t manage them herself.

It was limited.

And I hadn’t used it in months.

“I didn’t sign anything.”

“I know.”

“Let me see it.”

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

Mom had sent a photograph.

I enlarged it.

There was her name.

Margaret Lawson.

And underneath it was mine.

Claire Bennett.

The signature looked like mine.

Not exactly.

But close enough that someone who didn’t know me might believe it.

My mouth went dry.

“Who received the property?”

Mom spoke to someone in the room.

I heard papers moving.

Then Daniel’s voice in the background.

Mom came back.

“Northbridge Property Holdings.”

I’d never heard of it.

Nina took out her phone.

“I’m searching it.”

“Wait.”

I was looking at the document again.

There was an address for the company.

A small office suite in Columbus.

Something about it looked familiar.

I couldn’t place it.

Then Nina made a sound beside me.

“Claire.”

I turned.

Her face had changed.

“What?”

She held up her phone.

“Northbridge was registered using an address connected to Cole Consulting.”

I still didn’t understand.

Then she said the name.

“Vanessa Cole.”

For a moment, the only sound in the room was Lily breathing.

Vanessa had been Ethan’s assistant for almost two years.

She’d left his company the previous fall.

At least that was what Ethan had told me.

I’d met her twice.

Once at a company Christmas party.

Once when she’d dropped off a folder at our house.

Young, polished, always smiling.

Ethan had mentioned her often enough that I’d once teased him about it.

He’d looked annoyed.

“She’s an employee, Claire. Don’t make it weird.”

I handed Lily carefully to Nina.

Then I called Daniel.

“I need you to check everything.”

“Claire, you’ve just given birth.”

“I know.”

I looked at the photograph of my signature.

“Check the loan. Check the company. And don’t contact Ethan.”

There was a short silence.

“Why Ethan?”

I looked at Nina.

She already knew.

“Because I think my husband is involved.”

I Stopped Asking Ethan Questions

By that evening, Daniel had confirmed enough that I stopped wondering whether the document was a clerical error.

The loan existed.

Two hundred eighty thousand dollars.

It had been secured after the fraudulent transfer of Mom’s house.

And part of the money had moved through an account associated with Ethan.

Daniel wouldn’t give me every detail over the phone.

He didn’t need to.

“Claire, I want you to understand something,” he said. “Your mother reported the transaction immediately. The bank has frozen what it can. We’re challenging the transfer.”

“Can she lose the house?”

“Not if we can establish the signatures were forged, and right now we have good reason to believe they were.”

I looked down at Lily sleeping in the clear hospital bassinet.

“What about Ethan?”

Daniel hesitated.

“There appears to be a financial connection between him and Vanessa Cole.”

“What kind?”

“An account.”

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Joint?”

“Yes.”

That was enough.

I thanked him and ended the call.

Nina was standing near the door.

“What do you want to do?”

I looked at my phone.

There were three new messages from Ethan.

How are you feeling?

How’s Lily?

I’ll bring you both something nice when I get home.

I read them twice.

Then I turned off the preview notifications.

“Nothing yet.”

Nina studied my face.

“Claire.”

“If I accuse him now, he’ll know we’re looking.”

She sat beside me.

“So what are you going to do?”

I picked up the photograph Mom had sent.

My forged signature was still there.

Six weeks earlier, I would have called Ethan immediately.

I would have demanded an explanation.

I would have listened while he told me I was confused, emotional, suspicious, tired.

That night, I didn’t call him at all.

Instead, I asked Daniel to preserve every document he had.
