Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

Grandpa looked at me from his hospital bed and quietly said, “I want to hear what they say after I’m gone… before I’m actually gone.” I called my father.“Dad… Grandpa passed away this morning.” He let out a relieved sigh. “At least this is finally over. Has the attorney called about the will yet?” Then I called my brother. He laughed. “Looks like the company is finally ours.” Neither of them knew Grandpa was sitting beside me, listening to every single word…

Part 2 of 3

Grandpa’s eyes never left the hospital window.

“You answered exactly as I hoped you wouldn’t.”

The line remained open.

No one spoke.

Finally Grandpa said one last sentence.

Quietly.

Clearly.

“Tell your parents I’ll be rewriting my will.”

He pressed End Call himself.

Then he carefully folded his reading glasses and placed them beside the phone exactly where they had been before.

Neither of us spoke for almost a full minute.

Finally he looked at me.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“Tomorrow morning…”

He rested one hand over mine.

“…bring me Michael Bennett.”

I recognized the name immediately.

Grandpa’s attorney.

Then he added something I wasn’t expecting.

“And bring your work laptop.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

For the first time since I’d walked into the hospital that morning, Arthur Wheeler smiled.

“Because I think someone has been stealing from my company.”

The Spreadsheet Only Had Three Red Rows

The next morning, I arrived at the hospital carrying my laptop instead of a paperback novel.

Grandpa’s attorney, Michael Bennett, was already there with a slim leather folder.

He shook my hand.

“Arthur says you’ve found something.”

I looked at Grandpa.

He nodded once.

“Show him.”

I opened Wheeler Industrial’s accounting system.

For nearly four years, I’d worked as a forensic accountant for a Columbus consulting firm. Grandpa had occasionally asked me to review company reports because, in his words, “fresh eyes notice old lies.”

At first, I hadn’t found much.

Then one invoice caught my attention.

The vendor had billed Wheeler Industrial nearly $480,000 for industrial equipment.

The address belonged to an empty office building.

That led to another payment.

Then another.

Eventually I stopped counting until I’d mapped three companies that all shared the same mailing address and the same accountant.

Millions of dollars had disappeared through them.

Michael leaned closer.

“Who approved these?”

I clicked another page.

Only two names appeared again and again.

Daniel Wheeler.

Mason Wheeler.

Grandpa didn’t interrupt.

He simply watched the screen.

I opened the final spreadsheet.

Three rows were highlighted in red.

“These transfers happened last month,” I said.

“Each one was approved within twelve minutes of the previous payment.”

Michael adjusted his glasses.

“Enough to justify an immediate internal investigation.”

Grandpa slowly reached for the folder beside his bed.

Inside was the latest version of his will.

He placed one hand on it.

“We’re changing more than one document today.”

They Didn’t Come for Grandpa

Less than an hour later, my father’s SUV pulled into the hospital parking lot.

He hadn’t visited in over a week.

Now he was here before visiting hours even ended.

My mother hurried beside him with her purse still hanging open, while Mason kept checking his phone as we walked down the hallway.

The nurse smiled politely.

“You’re here to see Mr. Wheeler?”

Dad nodded.

“Of course.”

She looked at the visitor log.

Then back at him.

“He’ll be happy to finally have more family around.”

Nobody answered.

When they entered the room, Grandpa was sitting upright, reading the newspaper.

Dad froze.

For a split second, genuine surprise crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

“Dad…”

Grandpa folded the newspaper neatly.

“Daniel.”

Mom stepped forward first.

“Arthur, Claire scared all of us.”

Grandpa looked at me.

Then back at her.

“Did she?”

Nobody spoke.

The silence stretched long enough for the heart monitor beside the bed to become the loudest sound in the room.

Dad finally pulled a chair closer.

“Let’s forget yesterday happened.”

Grandpa tilted his head.

“Yesterday told me everything I needed to know.”

One Question Nobody Could Answer

Grandpa reached for the visitor clipboard resting on his bedside table.

He held it up.

Only one name appeared over the previous nine days.

Claire Wheeler.

He handed it to Dad.

“Who signed in Tuesday?”

Dad looked down.

Nothing.

“Wednesday?”

Still nothing.

“Friday?”

He slowly lowered the clipboard.

Mom tried to smile.

“Arthur, we called every day.”

Grandpa nodded.

“The nurses have a record of incoming calls.”

Mom’s smile faded.

He looked toward Mason.

“Which doctor was treating me?”

Mason blinked.

“I… I don’t remember his name.”

Grandpa waited.

Nothing.

“What floor am I on?”

Silence again.

I watched my brother glance toward the hallway, hoping someone else would answer.

No one did.

Grandpa quietly placed the clipboard back onto the table.

“You were preparing for my funeral.”

He rested one hand over the blanket.

“Claire was preparing for my recovery.”

No one argued.

The Money Trail

Michael opened his folder.

Instead of spreading dozens of documents across the bed, he placed only four invoices on the rolling tray.

That was enough.

I turned my laptop toward everyone.

“These four payments total almost $2.8 million.”

Dad barely looked.

“Large companies move money every day.”

I clicked another window.

“These companies all list different names.”

Another click.

“But the same mailing address.”

Another.

“And the same bank account receiving transfers.”

Mason shifted in his chair.

Dad folded his arms.

“Coincidences happen.”

I opened one final page.

The approval history appeared on the screen.

Every transfer had been authorized using my father’s company account.

Every secondary approval belonged to Mason.

Nobody spoke.

Grandpa finally broke the silence.

“Daniel.”

Dad looked up.

“Tell me I’m looking at a mistake.”

For the first time in my life, my father couldn’t answer immediately.

Instead he asked me a question.

“Claire… where did you get access to these records?”

“Grandpa asked me to review them three months ago.”

His face changed.

He realized this investigation hadn’t started yesterday.
