Ten Days After Giving Birth, My Husband and Mother-in-Law Threw Me and My Newborn Twin Sons Out Into the Snow—They Had No Idea They Had Just Betrayed the $8 Billion CEO Who Secretly Owned Everything They Called Their Own… But the Biggest Shock Was Still to Come

Part 2 of 3

She had preserved the Waverly name, kept hundreds of employees in their jobs, and allowed the family to believe that a distant investment group had saved them.

She had done it because she loved Nolan.

Now she understood that her kindness had become the foundation of their entitlement.

“Where did the money go?” she asked.

Reid opened another file.

“Some of it moved through overseas accounts. A large portion was transferred to a medical foundation called Northstar Legacy.”

The name felt familiar.

Audrey searched her memory.

Then she remembered.

Northstar Legacy had helped fund the private fertility clinic where she had received treatment.

“Why would a fashion company send that much money to a medical foundation?”

“That is what we are trying to determine.”

Reid placed another document on the screen.

It contained the name of the clinic.

Silverpine Reproductive Center.

The same clinic where Audrey had been told that becoming a mother might be impossible.

The same clinic that had later contacted her with news of one final available treatment.

The same clinic that had celebrated when two healthy embryos developed.

Audrey felt a pressure building in her chest.

“Recover every record connected to Silverpine,” she said.

“Our team is already working on it.”

Reid hesitated.

“There is something else.”

“Tell me.”

“Someone tried to access the twins’ hospital files this afternoon.”

Audrey sat straighter.

“Who?”

“A representative claiming to work for Nolan’s legal team. He requested birth records, genetic reports, and information about unusual inherited markers.”

Audrey looked toward the nursery monitor.

The twins slept peacefully, unaware that strangers were searching through their medical histories.

This was no longer only about an unfaithful husband or a cruel family.

Something larger had been moving around her before the babies were born.

The Woman in the White Coat

At three in the morning, building security contacted Audrey.

A woman stood in the lobby asking to see her.

Her name was Paige Holloway.

Audrey recognized her immediately.

Three weeks before the twins were born, someone had sent her a photograph of Nolan leaving a hotel beside Paige.

Nolan’s hand rested against the woman’s back.

Paige wore a white medical coat.

At the time, Audrey had assumed she was Nolan’s secret partner.

Now she was not so certain.

Grant escorted Paige into the office.

She appeared exhausted and frightened.

A faint red mark circled one wrist, and snow had melted into her dark hair.

“I know what you think,” Paige said. “But I was never involved with your husband romantically.”

Audrey studied her.

“Then explain the photographs.”

Paige reached into her coat and placed a small flash drive on the desk.

“Nolan wanted you to believe the wrong story. An affair would distract you from what he was really doing.”

Audrey did not touch the drive.

“What was he doing?”

Paige swallowed.

“Monitoring your pregnancy for his mother.”

The room became painfully quiet.

Grant moved closer to Audrey’s desk.

Paige continued.

“I worked as a genetic records specialist at Silverpine. Two years ago, I began finding inconsistencies in patient files. Donor histories were being changed. Embryos were listed under different identification numbers. Some pregnancies were placed into private research programs without the mothers being informed.”

Audrey’s hands went cold.

“Was my file changed?”

Paige nodded.

“Yes.”

Audrey looked toward the sleeping babies on the monitor.

“How?”

“Your final treatment was moved into a restricted program called Continuance.”

“I never agreed to that.”

“No patient did.”

Paige’s voice trembled.

“The program focused on rare inherited traits, advanced immune compatibility, and unusual blood characteristics. Officially, it was medical research. Unofficially, certain wealthy clients were looking for children who could become compatible donors for family members with rare conditions.”

Audrey rose from her chair.

“My sons are not medical property.”

“I know,” Paige said quickly. “That is why I came.”

Audrey forced herself to sit again.

“What did Nolan know?”

“He discovered the truth after your pregnancy was confirmed. Lenora told him to cooperate. She promised him control of the Waverly company once the children were born.”

Audrey felt something inside her finally break.

Not with noise.

Not with tears.

It broke quietly, like a final thread being cut.

Nolan had known that her pregnancy had been secretly monitored.

He had watched her decorate the nursery.

He had held her hand during appointments.

He had told her not to worry.

All while reporting information to his mother.

The Name Buried in Audrey’s Family History

Reid joined the conversation through the secure video system.

He had reviewed the first files recovered from Paige’s flash drive.

“There is a patient code repeated throughout the Silverpine documents,” he said. “The code is Northstar.”

Paige nodded.

“That was the recipient connected to Audrey’s pregnancy.”

Audrey looked at Reid.

His face had changed.

He recognized the name.

“What are you not telling me?” she asked.

Reid removed his glasses.

“Your father funded an experimental medical project nearly thirty years ago. The internal designation was Northstar.”

Audrey’s father, Harrison Langford, had reportedly died when she was sixteen.

His passing had occurred at the family estate in Westchester County.

Audrey had always been told it was sudden and natural.

“What kind of project?”

“I never received full access,” Reid said. “The records were sealed by your father personally. But one of the scientists involved later helped establish Silverpine.”

Audrey stood and walked toward the window.

Far below, Manhattan lights glittered against the dark sky.

For years, she had believed her father’s medical investments were ordinary business decisions.

Now his name was appearing inside a secret fertility program connected to her children.

A memory returned to her.

The night before her father disappeared from her life, Audrey had walked past the chapel near the old family estate.

She had heard him arguing with a woman.

The woman had said something Audrey never forgot.

The family line must continue.
