Part 3 of 3

I waited until she looked up.

“You didn’t cause what happened by refusing to give away something that belonged to you.”

“I know.”

She hesitated.

“I just wish she’d stopped when I said no.”

There was nothing I could say to erase that memory.

So I stayed beside her.

With support, Daniela eventually decided to cooperate with the proceedings.

She gave her account in her own words and answered questions about what happened.

Patricia ultimately accepted responsibility for the assault through a judicial resolution that included supervision conditions and restrictions on contact.

The suspected misuse of my signature remained a separate matter.

Authorities reviewed Roberto’s business dealings, although not every suspicion could be proven.

What was established was that someone had attempted to use an authorization I hadn’t signed.

My employer confirmed that the request had been stopped before protected technical information was released.

I was relieved.

But there was no moment when I felt victorious.

My marriage was ending. My daughter had been hurt. Our family would never return to what it had been.

Still, we were moving forward.

THE FIRST TIME DANIELA DROVE AGAIN

After leaving the hospital, Daniela struggled with sleep.

Unexpected phone calls made her anxious. Sometimes she startled when she heard footsteps outside her bedroom.

We found a therapist who helped her rebuild her confidence at her own pace.

She gradually returned to university and resumed her bookstore job.

But she avoided driving.

Her Honda sat in the apartment parking lot for weeks.

I never pressured her.

Then one Saturday afternoon, she appeared in the living room holding her keys.

“Dad, would you come with me?”

“Of course. Where are we going?”

“I want to drive.”

We went downstairs together.

Daniela sat behind the wheel while I took the passenger seat.

She adjusted the mirrors, fastened her seat belt, and placed both hands on the steering wheel.

Then she sat without starting the engine.

“I’m nervous,” she admitted.

“We don’t have to do this today.”

She shook her head.

“No. I want to.”

I nodded.

“Take your time.”

She started the car.

We drove slowly through the neighborhood toward a quiet park.

At first, she barely spoke. She checked every mirror twice and gripped the steering wheel tightly.

But after several minutes, her shoulders relaxed.

When we reached the park, she pulled into a parking space and switched off the engine.

Then she turned toward me.

“I did it.”

I smiled.

“You sure did.”

She laughed.

“It’s just driving, Dad.”

“I know.”

But we both understood it wasn’t just driving.

For months, those keys had reminded her of the worst afternoon of her life.

Now she was holding them again, deciding where she wanted to go.

We sat watching families walk through the park.

Then Daniela asked something unexpected.

“Are you going to keep traveling so much?”

I considered the question.

My job mattered to me. I’d worked hard to reach my position, and I couldn’t simply abandon my responsibilities.

But I’d also missed signs that something was wrong at home.

“I’m going to talk to my manager about changing my schedule,” I said. “I can’t avoid every trip, but I don’t want to be gone as often.”

“You don’t have to change everything because of me.”

“I’m not doing it just because of you.”

She smiled.

“Good. Because I still plan to graduate and move out someday.”

I laughed.

“That’s the idea, sweetheart.”

For the first time in months, discussing the future didn’t feel frightening.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

The divorce took time.

There were shared assets, financial obligations, and difficult decisions about our home.

I followed my attorney’s advice and allowed the legal process to determine how everything should be handled.

I didn’t want revenge disguised as a financial settlement.

I wanted a fair resolution and stability for Daniela.

Eventually, the divorce was finalized.

By then, Daniela was doing much better.

She’d completed another semester with excellent grades, returned to her normal work schedule, and begun spending time with friends again.

We celebrated at a small restaurant near campus.

Just the two of us.

After dinner, Daniela reached into her purse.

“I got you something.”

She handed me a white envelope.

Inside was a photograph taken the day we bought her Honda.

Daniela stood beside the car, grinning proudly, while I held up the keys.

I’d forgotten she’d asked the salesman to take the picture.

On the back, she’d written:

Thank you for believing me when I was afraid nobody would.

I stared at the words.

“Honey…”

She reached across the table.

“You don’t have to say anything.”

I swallowed.

“I’m proud of you.”

She smiled.

“I know, Dad. You’ve told me about a hundred times.”

I laughed, though my eyes were wet.

I put the photograph in my wallet.

Not because it reminded me of what Patricia had done.

Because it reminded me of the young woman Daniela was becoming.

A DIFFERENT TABLE

Several months later, Daniela and I moved back into the house after the property arrangements were settled.

She was comfortable returning, but there was one thing she wanted to change.

The entryway table.

It was the same dark wooden table she’d struck when Patricia pushed her.

One afternoon, Daniela stood in front of it.

“Dad, can we get rid of this thing?”

I looked at the table.

“Absolutely.”

“I never even liked it. Mom picked it because she said it looked expensive.”

I smiled.

“Then let’s find something we actually like.”

The next morning, we went furniture shopping.

Daniela rejected several tables for being too bulky, too dark, or too complicated to assemble.

Eventually, we chose a simple one made of light-colored wood.

Nothing expensive.

Just something that felt right.

We brought it home in a flat cardboard box and spent the afternoon assembling it.

Halfway through, Daniela realized she’d installed one of the supports backward.

She stared at the instructions.

“Dad, I think I messed this up.”

I examined the piece.

“Considering you’re studying engineering, I’m a little concerned.”

She burst out laughing.

“Don’t start. You handed me the wrong screw.”

“That’s a serious accusation.”

“I have evidence.”

She held up the instruction booklet, and I laughed harder than I had in months.

We fixed the mistake together.

When the table was finished, Daniela went upstairs and returned with a framed photograph.

It showed us standing outside her university.

She placed it in the center of the table.

Then she set her car keys beside it.

I looked at them for a moment.

The last time I’d seen those keys near the entrance, Patricia had been holding them while Daniela lay unconscious.

Now my daughter had placed them there herself.

“Looks good,” I said.

Daniela stepped back.

“Yeah. I think it does.”

Then she leaned her head against my shoulder.

“Love you, Dad.”

I put my arm around her.

“Love you too, sweetheart.”

A few minutes later, Daniela picked up her keys.

“I’m meeting some friends. I’ll be back around nine.”

“Drive safely.”

She smiled.

“Always.”

I watched her walk through the front door, climb into the car she’d worked so hard to buy, and pull away from the driveway.

Then I went back inside.

The new table stood beside the entrance, with our photograph resting on top.

For the first time in months, I didn’t feel the need to check the security cameras.

I simply turned on the porch light so Daniela could find her way home.
