Seven Years After I Walked Away From Our Wedding, I Returned With My Son—and My Ex Went Pale the Moment He Saw Him. “Tell Me the Truth… Is He Mine?” I Said No and Kept Walking. But When He Started Counting the Dates, He Finally Discovered Why I Had Really Left…

Part 2 of 3

“Tell me the truth.”

I knew exactly what he was going to ask.

“Is that boy mine?”

Ellis looked at me in confusion.

I answered immediately.

“No.”

Camden frowned.

“He’s seven.”

“Yes.”

“And you left seven years ago.”

“Correct.”

He moved closer.

“Marlowe, look at him.”

My voice became colder.

“I look at him every day. I know exactly who my son is.”

“Then tell me who his father is.”

“Ethan Langley.”

Camden stared at me.

“When did you marry him?”

“That information stopped being your concern seven years ago.”

His jaw tightened.

“You disappeared after our wedding.”

That was when I finally corrected him.

“I didn’t disappear after our wedding, Camden. I stayed in Massachusetts for seven days.”

He blinked.

“What?”

“Seven days. I waited for you to come to my parents’ house.”

His expression changed.

“I thought you needed space.”

I almost smiled.

“No. You thought I would eventually become afraid of losing the Ashford name and come back on my own.”

He said nothing.

Because we both knew it was true.

What His Mother Did Two Days Later

Then I told him the part he had never known.

“Your mother came to see me.”

Camden looked genuinely confused.

“My mother?”

“Two days after the wedding.”

“Why?”

“She offered me two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

Beckett’s mouth fell open.

Camden stared at me as if I had started speaking another language.

“That’s not true.”

“Sloane was sitting beside her.”

His face tightened.

“What exactly did she say?”

I remembered every word.

“She told me to take the money, help my parents improve their business, leave Massachusetts and never contact you again.”

“I never authorized that.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked at him for several seconds.

“Because you still hadn’t shown up.”

That silenced him.

At that moment, Ellis’s smartwatch rang.

His face immediately lit up.

“Dad!”

He answered.

Ethan appeared on the screen from San Francisco, still wearing the jacket from a business meeting.

“There’s my favorite traveler. How was Boston?”

“Good. Mom is talking to some people.”

Ethan glanced toward me.

“Everything okay?”

“Yes.”

Ellis cheerfully added:

“One of the men thought I was his kid.”

I closed my eyes for half a second.

Ethan remained perfectly calm.

“Camden Ashford?”

Camden looked startled.

“Yes,” I said.

Ethan nodded.

“All right. Ellis, take care of your mom and make sure she actually eats dinner instead of surviving on coffee.”

“I will.”

I smiled.

“I can hear you, you know.”

“That was the intention.”

The call ended.

Camden looked at the blank screen.

Something in his expression had changed.

He had just witnessed something no timeline could explain away.

A father talking to his son.

A husband talking to his wife.

A family behaving like a family.

The Second Offer

The following morning, my mother called me.

“Marlowe, someone is here.”

I heard another voice in the background and immediately recognized it.

Camden’s mother.

Forty minutes later, I walked into my parents’ living room.

Vivienne Ashford sat on the sofa wearing the same expression of controlled elegance I remembered.

Sloane Mercer sat beside her.

A leather folder rested on the coffee table.

Vivienne opened it.

There were documents for a condominium in Boston, an investment account, and shares in one of the Ashford family companies.

“Camden has never married,” she said. “He never truly moved on.”

I stared at the papers.

Then I laughed quietly.

“Seven years ago you offered me money to leave.”

Vivienne stiffened.

“Circumstances were different.”

I pushed the folder back toward her.

“And now you’re offering money to return.”

Sloane leaned forward.

“Maybe you should at least consider what you and Camden could have had.”

I looked at her.

“I think much more often about what my life would have become if I had stayed.”

The front door opened.

Camden walked in.

Beckett was behind him.

His eyes immediately fell on the folder.

“Mom, what is that?”

Vivienne said nothing.

Camden looked at her.

“Did you offer Marlowe money seven years ago?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

Vivienne exhaled.

“I was protecting you.”

Camden laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“From what?”

“From someone who had just embarrassed you publicly.”

Camden stared at his mother.

Then something unexpected happened.

For perhaps the first time in his life, he stopped defending himself.

“I embarrassed her.”

The room became silent.

He turned toward my parents.

“I was the one who invited another woman into a moment that belonged to Marlowe.”

Then he looked at my father.

“I treated your family as though having less money meant having less dignity.”

My father studied him carefully.

“That was your real mistake.”

Camden nodded.

“I know.”

“Not Sloane?”

“No.”

“Not your mother?”

Camden swallowed.

“No.”

My father pointed toward him.

“You.”

Camden lowered his head.

“Yes, sir.”

An Apology Could Not Rewrite Seven Years

Camden apologized to my parents.

Not dramatically.

My father would not allow that.

When Camden started to bend as though overwhelmed by emotion, Dad stopped him.

“Stand up. Look at us. If you mean it, say it like an adult. We don’t need a performance.”

So Camden did.
