Part 2 of 3

Not grief.

Relief.

The Missing Pages

Reid recovered quickly.

“That is impossible,” he said. “We tried for four years.”

“We followed the information you gave me for four years,” I replied.

His eyes shifted toward Camille.

After the divorce, I requested a complete copy of my medical history. The documents I received contained more than one hundred pages, yet several laboratory summaries were missing.

At first, the clinic blamed an archiving mistake.

Then Dr. Ames found the original digital records.

My hormone levels had been healthy. My ovarian reserve had been normal. Every scan showed that I was physically capable of carrying a pregnancy.

The repeated failures had been connected to severe abnormalities in Reid’s samples.

The original specialist had explained that natural conception was highly unlikely and had suggested using a donor.

Reid had known the truth.

Instead of telling me, he paid a clinic administrator to replace several summary pages. The altered version made it appear that my body was responsible.

He needed me exhausted, ashamed, and desperate enough to sign whatever he placed in front of me.

That was exactly what I had done.

The Marriage Was Only Part of the Plan

During our divorce, Reid repeatedly told me that the company was struggling.

He claimed we had large debts, weak contracts, and almost no available cash. He persuaded me to surrender most of my ownership in exchange for a small settlement and a clean ending.

Camille helped him prepare the financial statements.

As director of my foundation, she had access to my signature, passwords, donor records, and company documents.

Over two years, she and Reid transferred nearly two million dollars into a private consulting firm they controlled together.

They had not simply betrayed me emotionally.

They had used my grief to take my work, my reputation, and my financial security.

I remembered the night I signed the settlement agreement.

Reid had placed a pen beside my hand and spoken gently, almost kindly.

“At least leave with some dignity, Mallory.”

Camille had waited in the next room with a bowl of soup, pretending she was worried about me.

By sunrise, they controlled nearly everything I had spent twelve years building.

Reid stepped closer to me in the hospital corridor.

“You cannot prove any of this,” he said.

Dr. Ames raised the envelope slightly.

“The hospital audit already has.”

Camille’s face changed.

“Reid, you told me those records had been removed.”

He turned sharply toward her.

“Be quiet.”

That single response revealed more than their carefully staged photographs ever had.

Their perfect relationship was already beginning to collapse.

The Confession They Never Expected

I took my phone from my handbag.

“The clinic administrator admitted what happened six weeks ago,” I said. “He provided the original records, the altered documents, the bank transfers, and the messages you sent him.”

Reid’s confidence disappeared.

“You have been watching us?”

“No,” I answered. “I have been cooperating with the county prosecutor’s office.”

Two hospital security officers appeared at the far end of the corridor. They did not approach us yet. They simply remained near the reception desk, ready to step in if necessary.

Camille began to cry.

“Mallory, I was frightened,” she said. “Reid told me you would take everything away from us.”

I looked at the woman who had once known every private fear I carried.

“You helped take my marriage, my company shares, and the foundation I built. You stood in court and said I was confused when you knew I was telling the truth.”

“I am sorry.”

“You are sorry because the evidence still exists.”

Reid pointed toward Dr. Ames.

“What does he gain from this? Is he involved with you?”

Dr. Ames did not react to the accusation.

“I am Mallory’s physician, professional adviser, and witness,” he said. “Nothing more.”

That was the truth.

During the year after my divorce, I had learned something important: rebuilding my life did not require another man to rescue me.

I had needed accurate information, legal help, and the courage to trust myself again.

The Second Result

Dr. Ames opened the envelope.

“There is another finding,” he said.

Camille immediately stopped crying.

Dr. Ames looked at the child in her arms before turning toward Reid.

“Your documented medical condition makes natural conception extremely unlikely,” he explained. “A court-approved parentage test has now confirmed that you are not this child’s biological father.”

Reid’s face became blank.

He stared at Camille.

She slowly backed against the wall.

For years, Reid had used the boy’s existence as proof that I had been the problem.
