Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

My Son Said I Was Too Old to Keep the Tennessee Farm My Wife and I Had Built Together, So He Blocked My Driveway With a Concrete Truck and Waited for Me to Give Up—But He Never Asked Why My Late Wife Had Always Kept One Old Phone Hidden in the Closet

Part 2 of 3

Silence.

Then—

“Blocked it how?”

“Concrete mixer.”

Another pause.

“Is he trying to stop you from leaving?”

“Until I sign papers selling the farm.”

Harry didn’t interrupt.

He let me finish.

When I did, he asked only one question.

“Is your porch camera still working?”

I looked toward the blinking blue light above the front door.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

His voice became calm in a way I’d heard only a few times before.

“Don’t argue with him.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Don’t touch the truck.”

“I won’t.”

“Stay inside.”

I watched Michael glance impatiently toward the house.

Harry continued.

“I’m making a couple of calls.”

“How long?”

“Half an hour. Maybe less.”

He paused again.

“Jack?”

“Yeah?”

“Ellen would’ve called too.”

The line disconnected.

I stood there holding the satellite phone a little longer than necessary.

Outside, the concrete drum kept turning.

Waiting Was Harder Than Arguing

Michael knocked twenty minutes later.

Three sharp knocks.

I opened only the screen door.

“Dad.”

“Morning.”

He looked irritated.

“Are we doing this or not?”

“No.”

He sighed loudly.

“You’re being stubborn.”

“Maybe.”

“You can’t keep this place forever.”

I rested one hand on the doorframe.

“I don’t have to decide forever.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I’m trying to help you.”

I looked past him toward the truck.

The driver now seemed uncomfortable.

He checked his mirrors every few minutes.

“Then move the truck.”

Michael didn’t answer.

Instead he held up the folder again.

“Just read it.”

“No.”

His jaw tightened.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Refuse to listen.”

Before I could answer, another sound echoed up the gravel road.

Sirens.

Not loud.

Not rushed.

Just steady.

Michael slowly turned around.

Two county patrol vehicles appeared first.

Behind them came Harry’s old pickup.

The patrol cars stopped behind the concrete mixer.

Deputies climbed out.

Harry stepped from his truck, removed his sunglasses, and looked directly at me.

I simply nodded once.

Then he turned toward my son.

The balance of power had already begun to change.

The Camera Had Seen Everything

One deputy spoke with Michael.

Another walked toward my porch.

Harry climbed the steps without hurrying.

“Morning, Jack.”

“Morning.”

He glanced at the blinking camera mounted above the front door.

“Let’s start with that footage.”

I unlocked the house and led them into the living room. The monitor connected to my security system sat on a small desk beside Ellen’s old sewing cabinet. I’d never been particularly interested in cameras. Ellen had insisted on installing them after a string of equipment thefts in the county years ago.

“Humor me,” she’d said.

I never imagined they would one day record our own son.

The deputy rewound the video.

There was Michael’s SUV arriving just after seven.

A few minutes later, the concrete mixer pulled into the driveway.

The driver backed it sideways until it completely blocked the only entrance.

Michael stepped out, pointed where he wanted the truck, then walked toward the porch carrying the folder.

The recording continued.

The deputy watched without saying much.

When my voice on the video repeatedly asked Michael to move the truck and he calmly refused, the deputy finally paused the recording.

“That’ll do.”

Harry folded his arms.

“Pretty straightforward.”

Outside, another deputy questioned the truck driver.

I watched through the window as the man removed his hard hat and rubbed the back of his neck. He didn’t look angry anymore.

He looked worried.

My Son Finally Ran Out Of Explanations

The deputies asked Michael to step away from the truck.

From the porch I could hear pieces of the conversation.

“Did you instruct the driver to block the road?”

“We were only talking.”

“Answer the question.”

A long silence.

“Yes.”

The deputy scribbled something into a notebook.

“Did your father ask you to move it?”

“Several times.”

“Did you refuse?”
