Someone was trying to make sure the answer pointed toward me.

The Diaper Bag

The officer requested the original camera footage.

While we waited, a man I had never seen before appeared near the nurses’ station and said he had been sent by the family to collect Evie’s diaper bag because it contained insurance documents.

I asked him who had sent him.

He gave the wrong last name.

Then he quickly walked away.

A few minutes later, the diaper bag disappeared.

Hospital security found it near the parking garage.

The gray envelope was still inside.

I immediately called my attorney, Marianne Cole, who had represented me in business matters for almost fifteen years.

When she arrived, I told her everything.

The missing forty-seven seconds.

Camille’s accusation.

Travis’s strange question.

The man who tried to take the bag.

Marianne listened without interrupting.

Then she said:

“Douglas, I don’t think this is really about what happened this morning.”

She was right.

The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

By that evening, Marianne had discovered something much larger.

Travis’s logistics company had recently applied for a private loan worth several million dollars.

Part of the financial guarantee listed in the paperwork was connected to a trust I had created for Evie.

The trust had been established after Evie was born.

I wanted my granddaughter to have money for college, a first home, and whatever opportunities life might offer her.

Travis could not control that money.

Neither could Camille.

I was the trustee.

Marianne placed a document in front of me.

At the bottom was my signature.

Except I had never signed it.

“This isn’t mine.”

“I know,” Marianne said.

Then she showed me another document.

Someone had already drafted paperwork questioning whether I should remain in control of Evie’s trust.

The reason given was disturbing.

It claimed that I had shown poor judgment around my granddaughter.

Suddenly everything began fitting together.

If I could be portrayed as an irresponsible grandfather, someone could argue that I should lose control of the trust.

And if I lost control of it, millions of dollars would become much easier to reach.

The Missing Forty-Seven Seconds

Investigators eventually recovered the complete security footage from my home’s system.

We watched it together.

At 9:17, I walked into the kitchen.

Then Camille appeared.

She entered the room where Evie’s portable crib had been set up.

She stayed there for approximately half a minute.

When she came out, one hand was tucked inside her coat pocket.

Those were the missing forty-seven seconds.

A small bottle of liquid drops was later found among items in the guest room.

The label had my name on it.

I had never purchased it.

I had never used it.

And I had certainly never given it to my granddaughter.

The accusation against me was beginning to fall apart.

But something still bothered me.

Where did Travis fit into all of this?

The Employee Who Tried to Warn Me

The memorial gathering Travis and Camille claimed they were attending was for Raymond Pike, an accountant who had worked for Travis’s company.

Two weeks earlier, Raymond had emailed me.

His message was short.

“Mr. Merrick, I found something involving Travis’s company that I think you need to see.”

I had been busy and never responded.

Now his sister gave Marianne a flash drive containing files Raymond had saved.

The records showed a company in serious financial trouble.

Contracts had disappeared.

Loans were piling up.

Money had moved through businesses that appeared to exist mostly on paper.

And among Raymond’s files was a note questioning the authenticity of my signature on the multimillion-dollar loan.

Then investigators found messages between Travis and Camille.

One message from Camille said:

“If your father sees the accounts before we finish this, everything is over.”

Travis responded:

“Whatever happens, Evie cannot be put in danger.”

I read that sentence several times.

Part of me wanted to feel relieved.

My son had drawn a line.

Then I realized the truth.

He knew there was a line because he knew there was a plan.

My Son Came to My House

Several days later, Travis appeared at my front door alone.

He looked exhausted.

He placed a folder on my kitchen table.

“Dad, I need you to sign something.”

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?”

“Temporary authority over Evie’s trust.”

I looked at him for a long time.

Then he said:

“If you cooperate, Camille can correct what she said at the hospital. She can tell them she was confused about the drops.”

I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

“You’re asking me to give you control of your daughter’s money in exchange for your wife taking back a false accusation?”

His face went pale.

“You don’t understand how bad things are.”

“Then explain them.”

He lowered his voice.

“There are other people involved. The company is falling apart.”

That was enough.

I finally understood that my granddaughter had become leverage in an adult financial disaster.
