Blue balloons floated above long tables.
A magician entertained children beside the swimming pool while servers carried trays through groups of elegantly dressed adults.
Judith Ashford loved an audience.
That afternoon, she had nearly a hundred people.
I arrived wearing a simple navy dress and carrying Owen’s birthday present.
Nathaniel walked beside me.
We had barely reached the garden when Judith spotted us.
Her smile vanished.
She crossed the lawn quickly.
Garrett followed behind her.
Natalie stood near the patio doors, frozen.
Judith stopped directly in front of me.
“You were told not to come.”
I looked at her calmly.
“I came to see my grandson.”
Garrett stepped forward.
“Mom, please. Don’t do this today.”
I turned toward him.
He looked exhausted.
For one brief second, I saw the little boy he used to be.
Then I remembered his signature on that letter.
“I’m not the one who started this today, Garrett.”
Judith folded her arms.
“This is private property.”
Nathaniel glanced at me.
I almost smiled.
“Yes,” I said. “It is.”
Judith clearly did not understand.
“Then leave.”
Before I could answer, a small voice shouted from across the garden.
“Grandma!”
Owen came running toward me.
His face lit up.
He wrapped both arms around my waist.
“You came!”
I hugged him.
“I promised.”
For several seconds, nothing else mattered.
The Mistake Judith Made In Front Of Everyone
Judith was furious.
She stepped closer.
“Garrett, handle this.”
Garrett looked at his son holding onto me.
He hesitated.
Judith noticed.
Her voice sharpened.
“Call security.”
Two private security guards approached from near the side entrance.
Nathaniel immediately stepped between us.
“Before anyone touches Mrs. Caldwell, I strongly recommend you confirm ownership of this property.”
Judith laughed.
“Ownership? My daughter and son-in-law have lived here for seven years.”
“Living somewhere and owning it are not the same thing.”
People nearby had begun listening.
Judith’s face tightened.
“What exactly are you implying?”
Nathaniel opened his leather folder.
He removed a certified property record.
“The Brookhaven residence is owned by Caldwell Heritage Group.”
Judith stared at him.
“Garrett controls that company.”
Nathaniel shook his head.
“No. Miriam Caldwell controls that company.”
The garden went silent.
Garrett closed his eyes.
Natalie slowly turned toward him.
“Garrett?”
He said nothing.
Judith looked from Nathaniel to me.
“That’s impossible.”
I finally answered.
“No, Judith. It’s simply something Garrett never told you.”
The Second Secret
Judith tried to recover.
“Fine. Perhaps there is some complicated family arrangement. That does not give you the right to interrupt this celebration.”
Nathaniel closed the property folder.
Then he opened another one.
“Actually, the ownership issue is no longer the biggest concern.”
I watched Judith’s expression.
For the first time, fear appeared.
Nathaniel continued.
“This morning, we discovered that documents were recently submitted suggesting this property could be pledged as security for a substantial private loan.”
Garrett turned sharply.
“What loan?”
Judith said nothing.
Natalie looked at her mother.
“Mom?”
Nathaniel continued.
“Since neither Garrett nor Mrs. Ashford has authority to pledge this property, the transaction has been stopped pending review.”
Judith’s face lost its color.
Garrett stared at her.
“You told me the financing came from your investment group.”
Judith finally spoke.
“This is not the place to discuss private financial matters.”
I looked around the garden.
Children were laughing in the distance.
The magician had started another trick.
Servers had quietly disappeared toward the house.
I lowered my voice.
“You made it public when you tried to remove me from my own home.”
Garrett Finally Learned The Truth
Garrett followed me inside.
Natalie and Judith came behind him.
Nathaniel remained near the doorway.
Once we reached the library, Garrett shut the door.
“Mom, I swear I didn’t know about any property loan.”
I believed him.
That did not excuse everything else.
