Part 2 of 3

“Laurel?”

She stared at him as though she were looking at a ghost.

“Dad?”

Walter stepped forward.

Laurel backed away.

“You shouldn’t be here. Brent will know you found me.”

Walter’s eyes filled.

“Sweetheart, why have you been hiding here?”

Laurel sank onto a chair.

Her answer changed everything.

“Because Brent made me believe I had done something terrible to Vanessa.”

Dean showed her recent photographs of Vanessa walking through downtown Boise beside Brent.

Laurel stared at the screen.

Then she covered her mouth.

“She’s alive?”

“Very much alive,” Dean said.

Laurel began to cry.

The Lie That Stole Six Years

Six years earlier, Laurel had loaned Vanessa a large amount of money to help start a business.

When the money disappeared and Vanessa refused to repay it, the friendship collapsed.

One evening, Brent encouraged Laurel to visit Vanessa and settle the disagreement privately.

There were drinks.

An argument followed.

Laurel remembered becoming unusually dizzy.

During the confusion, Vanessa fell beside a glass table and appeared badly hurt.

Laurel panicked.

She called Brent.

When he arrived, he convinced her that Vanessa was gone and that Laurel would lose everything if authorities became involved.

Her freedom.

Her reputation.

Most frightening of all, Owen.

“He told me I would never see my baby again,” Laurel whispered.

Brent proposed another solution.

He claimed he could arrange a staged accident and make it appear that Laurel had disappeared forever. She would remain hidden for several months while he prepared documents so they could eventually leave the country together with Owen.

Laurel agreed because she was terrified.

Several months became a year.

Then two.

Then six.

Brent took her phone and identification, claiming electronic records could expose her location. Whenever Laurel begged to leave, he brought printed pages showing supposed legal notices claiming authorities were searching for her.

None of them were real.

“I thought staying here was the only way Owen could have a normal life,” Laurel said.

Walter looked at the photographs covering the wall.

“Your mother believed you were gone.”

Laurel’s face changed.

Walter struggled to continue.

“She never recovered from losing you.”

Laurel lowered her head.

“Dad, I’m sorry.”

For several seconds, Walter felt years of grief rising inside him.

Then he looked at his daughter properly.

She had lost those years too.

He crossed the room and held her.

“You’re coming home.”

The Real Reason Behind the Money

The investigation quickly uncovered the rest.

Vanessa had never been seriously injured that night.

The scene Laurel remembered had been carefully staged while she was disoriented.

Brent and Vanessa had been secretly involved long before Laurel disappeared.

Their plan had several purposes.

Brent could remove Laurel from his life without a complicated separation, keep control of Owen, and use Walter’s grief to obtain money.

And it worked.

For almost six years, Walter had transferred enormous amounts for expenses that either did not exist or were greatly exaggerated.

The money funded Brent’s expensive home, trips, restaurants, vehicles, and lifestyle with Vanessa.

The request for forty thousand dollars was supposed to be one of the final payments before Brent began moving assets elsewhere.

Owen had accidentally overheard part of their conversation.

The little boy did not understand the entire scheme.

He simply knew his father was laughing about Grandpa’s money.

That had been enough.

One Final Conversation

Investigators needed Brent and Vanessa to explain the scheme in their own words.

Laurel agreed to help.

When Brent arrived at the cottage one evening, Laurel was waiting.

He immediately noticed something different.

“What’s wrong with you?”

Laurel looked directly at him.

“I know Vanessa is alive.”

Brent stopped.

“Who told you that?”

“I saw her.”

His expression hardened.

“And I know there was never any official case searching for me.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Brent laughed.

“After six years, you suddenly figured it out?”

Laurel remained calm.

“Why did you do it?”

Brent called Vanessa.

When she arrived, Laurel asked the question again.

At first, they denied everything.

Then arrogance took over.

Vanessa admitted the scene at her apartment had been staged.

Brent admitted the documents were fake.

Then Laurel asked about Walter’s money.

Brent smiled.

“Your father made it easy. Every time I asked, he sent more.”

Laurel’s hands tightened.

“And my mother?”

The room became quiet.

Vanessa shrugged.

“That was never supposed to happen.”

Laurel stared at her.

“She spent her final months believing I was gone.”

Neither Brent nor Vanessa offered a meaningful answer.

Then Laurel asked the question that mattered most.

“What were you planning to do with Owen?”
