Part 2 of 3

Lenora’s gaze fell to the child she was carrying.

“From what she represents.”

She placed a medical file on the bed. According to the report inside, I had no biological connection to Mara’s baby. My mother watched me closely, expecting doubt to undo my marriage more efficiently than locked doors ever could.

Instead, I tore the report in half.

“I know this is my son.”

Three months earlier, an anonymous letter had reached me in Kansas City, along with photographs intended to make Mara look unfaithful. I had quietly ordered a lawful independent test, and the result had been conclusive. I had kept that test secret because I was ashamed that I had entertained the accusation for even an hour.

Lenora’s confidence wavered.

“Who conducted your test?”

“Tell me who falsified yours.”

Mara stepped forward unsteadily.

“Tell him about the recordings.”

I looked at her. “What recordings?”

“His voice,” she told my mother. “The messages you played every night.”

Lenora had shown Mara manufactured photographs of me with another woman and played computer-generated recordings claiming I had abandoned her. The household staff had been told that Mara had become confused and required isolation. Her phone had been removed, her correspondence intercepted, and medication had kept her drowsy enough that every day blurred into the next.

My mother’s calm finally broke.

“I was trying to make her tell me the truth.”

“What truth?”

“The records suggested that she entered this family under a false identity. Soon after your wedding, confidential designs disappeared from the company, contracts collapsed, and several executives defected. Someone wanted me to believe Mara was connected to it.”

“And you believed them.”

Lenora looked away.

Before I could demand more, Thomas entered holding a small black phone.

“There is something you need to hear,” he said.

My mother turned sharply. “Thomas, leave us.”

For nearly forty years, he had obeyed every Holloway instruction without question. This time, he remained where he was.

“I have been quiet far too long.”

The Brother We Had Mourned

The recording on Thomas’s phone had been made seventeen days earlier. At first there was only static, followed by Lenora’s voice.

“When the child arrives, take him upstairs.”

An unfamiliar man responded.

“And Mara?”

My mother’s answer came slowly.

“She must remain where she is until we know the truth.”

Then the man laughed.

I had heard that laugh throughout my childhood—in the barn, beside the lake, and across the long dining table whenever my older brother believed he had outsmarted me.

Silas Holloway had vanished five years earlier after an explosion destroyed his car on a mountain road. Lenora had identified the belongings recovered from the scene and arranged the memorial. I had carried the guilt ever since because Silas had been traveling to a meeting originally assigned to me.

Now his voice was coming from a recording made inside Cedar Glen.

“Silas is gone,” I said.

Lenora’s eyes filled with something that looked less like grief than surrender.

“That is what everyone was meant to believe.”

Before she could explain, Mara bent forward, gripping my arm as a powerful contraction took hold. Her labor had begun, and the intervals were already far too close.

I lifted her carefully.

“Call Dr. Haines.”

Thomas shook his head. “She was ordered away yesterday.”

A deep vibration traveled through the floor, and the lights flickered. One of my security supervisors called to report that the electronic gates had failed and several unfamiliar people had entered through the old service tunnels.

Lenora closed her eyes.

“He’s here.”

The private elevator stopped unexpectedly beneath the east wing, a level sealed since Silas vanished. When the doors opened, a silver-haired man in a dark overcoat stood under the emergency lights.

The scar along his cheek had changed him, but not enough.

“Hello, little brother,” Silas said.

Lenora stepped out first.
