My Mother Ordered Me to Watch Six Kids for Christmas Because I Was Single. She Didn’t Know I’d Found the $74,000 Account in My Name—So When She Arrived With an Old Key, My Voice Came Through the Door Camera…

Part 2 of 3

Near the end of the recording, Lauren lowered her voice.

“What happens if she finds the other account?”

Nathan did not know what she meant.

Over the next several days, I hired an attorney, disputed the fraudulent debt, secured the cottage records, changed the locks to my apartment, and requested copies of everything Human Resources had received.

Then I booked a ten-day stay at a quiet resort on Maui. It was still within the United States, far from Colorado, and peaceful enough for me to finish my proposal.

My family, however, needed to believe I had surrendered.

I sent my mother a carefully worded message: “You’re right that family matters. I received your plan for the children to arrive at nine.”

She answered almost immediately.

“I knew you would come to your senses.”

Three days before my flight, a vacation-rental manager called about a complaint involving “my listing.” I soon learned that Lauren had been advertising my apartment online for six months, using photographs of my living room, my address, and my name. The rental payments were being deposited into an unfamiliar account.

Months earlier, she had asked for my Wi-Fi password, claiming one of her children needed it during a visit. I had given it to her without hesitation.

To Lauren, I was not a sister. I was a resource she believed the family had a right to use.

Before dawn on December twenty-third, I left for the airport. The security cameras were running, the new locks were active, and a legal notice had been placed on the door stating that no one was permitted to enter or leave children unattended.

At exactly nine, while waiting to board, I opened the camera feed.

Lauren arrived in a large SUV packed with luggage, toys, blankets, and six bewildered children. She rang the bell several times. Soon afterward, Diane appeared carrying an old spare key.

The key no longer worked.

“Claire!” my mother shouted toward the camera. “We know you’re in there!”

Lauren began unloading suitcases. Diane made a phone call, and seconds later Nathan sent me a warning.

“Mom says they’ll leave the children in the hallway so you’ll have to open the door.”

On my screen, I could see the baby in Lauren’s arms and five older children standing among brightly colored bags, uncertain why the adults were arguing.

Then my mother looked directly into the camera.

“If Claire refuses to open the door, we’ll leave the children right here. Once she hears the baby crying, she’ll stop being selfish.”

That was the moment she lost control of the story.

The Voice Through the Door

I was already seated on the plane when I pressed the button that allowed me to speak through the security system.

“I’m not inside.”

Every face turned toward the camera.

“Where are you?” Diane demanded.

“About to take off.”

My mother stood perfectly still.

“Come back immediately.”

“No.”

“You confirmed that you would watch the children.”

“I confirmed that I received your message. I never agreed to take responsibility for them, and the notice on my door clearly states that no children may be left there.”

Diane glanced toward Lauren, suddenly aware that the conversation was being recorded.

“Claire, there’s no need to make a public scene.”

“The scene began when you used my identity, copied my signature, contacted my employer, and attempted to sell property that does not belong to you.”

Lauren’s expression changed.

“What is she talking about?”

I realized then that my mother had not told Lauren the whole truth. My sister knew about the pressure campaign, but she did not know Diane had submitted documents containing a copied signature.

“Mom told me you were trying to keep the cottage because you were greedy,” Lauren said.

“Grandma left it to me in a registered will. It cannot be sold for five years.”

Lauren turned toward our mother.

“You said I would receive my share as soon as Claire agreed to sell.”

“This is not the time,” Diane replied.

“Were you using me too?”

Before my mother could answer, the building manager arrived with a police officer. A retired fire captain who lived across the hall had seen six children and piles of luggage in the hallway and called for help.

Lauren hurriedly returned the bags to her SUV. Before leaving, she faced the camera.

“Claire, I didn’t know about the copied signature.”

“But you knew you were renting my apartment without permission.”

Her eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

It was the first honest answer I had heard from her in years.

Diane stepped closer to the camera.
