One Week Later, She Was On Her Knees, Begging For My Forgiveness

Part 2 of 3

It felt excessive.

At least then.

One Phone Call Changed Everything

The following morning, my phone rang before eight.

It was someone from my bank’s fraud department.

“Ms. Collins?”

“Yes.”

“Did you recently authorize someone to access your retirement account online?”

My stomach tightened.

“No.”

There was a short pause.

“Someone attempted to log in several times last night.”

I sat down slowly.

“Were they successful?”

“No. The account had already been locked because of your security update yesterday.”

I thanked her.

Then I looked at the hotel desk in front of me.

My laptop was still open from the night before.

Beside it sat my wedding ring.

Exactly where I had left it after taking it back from the kitchen table before I walked out.

For several minutes I simply stared at it.

Then I picked up my phone again.

This time I called my attorney.

“Someone tried getting into my retirement account.”

She didn’t sound surprised.

“Come in today.”

“Do you think it’s Ethan?”

There was another pause.

“I think it’s too early to accuse anyone.”

“Then what do we do?”

“We start collecting facts before someone starts rewriting them.”

An hour later, I was sitting across from her conference table.

She opened a yellow legal pad.

“Rachel,” she said quietly, “before we file anything else, I want to know exactly how much of your financial life your husband and his mother have been handling without you.”

I looked down at my hands.

Until that moment, I thought the worst thing Linda had done was demand three thousand dollars a month.

I had no idea that payment schedule on my kitchen table was only the smallest piece of a much larger problem.

Someone Had Been Borrowing Money in My Name

By the time I reached my attorney Melissa Grant’s office, she already had a checklist waiting on the conference table.

She didn’t begin with divorce papers.

She began with my finances.

“Before we talk about ending your marriage,” she said, “I want to make sure nobody can damage your future while we’re doing it.”

That sentence stayed with me.

She asked me to log into every financial account I owned.

Checking.

Savings.

Retirement.

Investment accounts.

Then she asked for permission to pull my credit reports.

I hadn’t looked at one in years.

There had never been a reason to.

Melissa frowned almost immediately.

“Rachel… do you recognize this loan?”

I leaned closer.

“No.”

She clicked again.

“This home equity line?”

“No.”

Another click.

“These credit cards?”

“No.”

The list kept growing.

Each account carried my name.

My address.

My Social Security number.

Some even included an electronic signature that looked almost identical to mine.

Almost.

Melissa pointed at the screen.

“Whoever did this practiced your signature.”

I felt cold.

“Can they really open all of this?”

“Not without enough personal information.”

She looked directly at me.

“Someone close to you had access.”

Within an hour every major credit bureau had frozen my credit.

Every bank received fraud alerts.

Every password was replaced.

Walking out of her office, I realized I wasn’t protecting my money anymore.

I was protecting my identity.

Ethan Knew More Than He Admitted

The detective assigned to my case invited me to review copies of the loan applications.

He placed three folders on the table.

Inside each one were documents bearing my name.

I studied every page.

At first, nothing looked unusual.

Then he handed me a page I had actually signed several years earlier when buying the house.

He placed it beside one of the loan applications.

“Now compare them.”

I noticed it immediately.

The fake signatures copied every letter.

But they never copied my rhythm.

Whoever forged them wrote slowly.

I never did.

The detective asked quietly,

“Who handled paperwork inside your family?”

“My husband had access to everything.”

I paused.

“So did my mother-in-law.”

He nodded.

“Did either of them ever ask you to sign blank forms?”

I remembered Linda’s voice.

“Sign here. I’ll finish filling it out later.”

Insurance renewals.

Warranty registrations.

Tax paperwork.

She always had another explanation.

Back then I never questioned it.

Now every memory felt different.

Two days later Ethan called.

His voice sounded nervous.

“Rachel… detectives came by Mom’s house.”

“I know.”

“You’re making this much bigger than it needs to be.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Someone stole my identity.”

He sighed.

“Mom was only trying to keep up with bills.”
