Part 2 of 3

Travel expenses.

They also discussed me.

In one exchange, Judith had written:

“Don’t bring up the Florida balance until her bonus clears. Be extra nice this week. Once the money arrives, we can finally catch up.”

Grant answered:

“I’ll handle her.”

Her.

Not my wife.

Not Maren.

Her.

I printed the messages and added them to the folder.

Still, one question bothered me.

Who was actually using the condo?

Grant had never mentioned traveling to Palm Beach.

Judith visited Florida occasionally, but not enough to justify maintaining a luxury home there.

So I hired an investigator to confirm who had been staying at the property.

Three days before Judith arrived demanding my bonus, I received the answer.

Her name was Tessa Monroe.

My closest friend since college.

The Photograph I Could Barely Look At

Back in the kitchen, I opened the gray folder and placed several documents in front of Grant.

His face changed immediately.

“Where did you get these?”

“Public records.”

Then I showed him copies of the transfers.

“And these came from our accounts.”

Judith looked at Grant.

Grant looked at me.

Neither denied anything.

I continued.

“For almost a year, money has been moving from our shared finances into Harbor Crest Ventures. That company owns a condo in Palm Beach. You two control the company.”

Grant finally spoke.

“It’s an investment.”

“An investment you never told your wife existed?”

“I was planning to explain everything once the property stabilized.”

Judith immediately stepped in.

“Exactly. Grant was trying to build something for the family.”

I reached deeper into the folder.

“Then perhaps both of you can explain why Tessa has been living there.”

The room went completely still.

I placed a photograph on the counter.

Tessa stood on the balcony overlooking the water.

She looked healthy, comfortable, and very pregnant.

Grant lowered his eyes.

That hurt more than I expected.

Tessa had been beside me during some of the hardest moments of my life.

After Grant and I lost a pregnancy the previous year, she brought groceries to our home, sat beside me for hours, and told me I would never face anything alone.

Months later, she told me she had accepted a remote consulting opportunity and wanted a fresh start in Florida.

I had hugged her before she left.

I had even sent her a housewarming gift.

Now I understood whose house I had helped warm.

“How long?” I asked.

Grant said nothing.

“How long, Grant?”

Finally, he whispered:

“Almost a year.”

Judith closed her eyes.

Grant continued quickly.

“Maren, this wasn’t supposed to happen this way.”

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Which part? The secret relationship? The hidden company? Or using my income to help finance both?”

The Truth Judith Thought Would Excuse Everything

Judith finally decided silence was no longer helping her.

She straightened her scarf and looked at me.

“Tessa is expecting Grant’s child.”

I already suspected it, but hearing the words aloud felt different.

Grant stepped forward.

“Maren, please let me explain.”

Judith continued before he could.

“Our family has always cared deeply about having grandchildren. After everything you went through, Grant didn’t know what your future would look like.”

I stared at her.

There are moments when someone says something so revealing that you no longer need another explanation.

That was one of them.

My career had nothing to do with it.

My income had simply made me useful.

My private grief had been turned into their justification.

And my closest friend had become part of the arrangement.

“So your solution was to hide another relationship while I paid the bills?”

Judith’s confidence finally weakened.

“We were trying to avoid unnecessary pain.”

“You weren’t avoiding pain,” I said. “You were postponing consequences.”

Grant’s eyes filled with panic.

“I never wanted to lose you.”

That sentence almost amazed me.

“Then you chose an unusual way to keep me.”

He reached toward me again, but this time stopped himself.

“I can end everything with Tessa. We’ll sell the condo. I’ll repay the money. We can go to counseling.”

I shook my head.

“You still think this is a negotiation.”

I Had Prepared Before They Walked Through the Door

Grant looked confused.

I pointed toward the small security camera near the bookshelf.

The light was on.

His eyes widened.
