Happy Soul Moral Stories

“My Mommy Has Been Sleeping for Three Days,” My 7-Year-Old Daughter Told the ER Nurse After Pushing Her Newborn Twin Siblings for Miles in an Old Wheelbarrow—When a Nurse Asked Why She Hadn’t Waited for Help, Emily Whispered, “Mommy Told Me If She Didn’t Wake Up, I Had to Take the Babies and Never Talk to the Man by Our House.” Hours Later, Police Reached Our Remote Home—and One Thing They Found Made Them Ask Who My Daughter Had Been Running From

Part 2 of 3

“Do you know his name?”

Emily shook her head.

Then she looked at me.

“Mommy told me not to talk to him.”

The man she meant was Dr. Nathan Vale.

I had met him eight years earlier.

And I had spent the last six months trying to prove that what happened inside his old clinic had never really ended.

Something Was Hidden Under the Wheelbarrow

The wheelbarrow had been taken to the sheriff’s department because Emily said someone had touched it before she left home.

That evening, Mark called me.

“Sarah, did you put anything underneath the tray?”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

There was a pause.

“What?”

“A USB drive.”

I had taped it beneath the metal basin three days before I collapsed.

It contained copies of old patient records, emails, intake forms, and photographs I’d collected over several months.

Most came from a storage box Daniel had found after his mother died.

The documents all pointed back to Vale Women’s Center, a private clinic that had closed nine years earlier.

Birth dates didn’t match.

Names had been changed.

Adoption paperwork appeared to have been recreated after the fact.

On three files, the names of the biological mothers had simply disappeared.

Mark asked:

“Why didn’t you bring this to police?”

“Because I didn’t know which part was real.”

“And Daniel?”

I stared through the window.

“He was helping me.”

That was why his disappearance had never made sense.

Daniel hadn’t been running from me.

He had been frightened by something we’d found.

The next morning, Mark returned.

He wasn’t alone.

A detective named Carla Bennett came with him.

She placed a photograph on my blanket.

A man was lying beside a drainage ditch less than two miles from my house.

Even with the bruising on his face, I recognized him.

Daniel.

“He’s alive,” Carla said immediately. “A utility crew found him this morning.”

I covered my mouth.

“Where is he?”

“County Medical.”

“Can I see him?”

“When he’s stable.”

Daniel had been missing for six weeks.

According to Carla, evidence suggested he had returned to Millbrook days earlier.

He had been trying to reach me.

Someone had stopped him before he made it to the house.

I looked at the old wheelbarrow in the photograph Carla had brought from our property.

One cracked wooden handle.

One crooked wheel.

Black tape beneath the tray hiding everything Daniel and I had been trying to understand.

Emily had unknowingly carried the evidence straight out of our yard.

And whoever had been watching us had missed it.

That was the first time I believed we might actually have a chance.

The Woman I Had Buried Without a Body

Two days later, I was walking slowly through the hospital hallway when I saw a woman standing outside the twins’ room.

She had shoulder-length brown hair.

A gray coat.

A thin white scar near her left eyebrow.

She looked at me and started crying.

I stopped.

There are faces you forget.

There are faces you think you’ve forgotten until they appear in front of you.

“Lily?”

My sister hadn’t been seen in eight years.

Our family had held a memorial service for her without a body.

The woman nodded.

I grabbed the rail beside me.

“Where have you been?”

Lily looked toward the nursery window.

“Trying to stay where Nathan couldn’t find me.”

“For eight years?”

“Sarah—”

“You let me think you were dead.”

She didn’t defend herself.

That made me angrier.

Then Emily came around the corner holding a nurse’s hand.

Lily froze.

Emily looked at her.

Then at me.

“Mom?”

Lily sat down.

Her hands were trembling.

“She got Michael’s eyes.”

I heard the name.

Michael Reed.

Daniel’s older brother.

He had died in a car accident before Emily was born.

I looked at Lily.

“What did you say?”

She wiped her face.

“Sarah, Emily is my daughter.”

The Records Had Another Mother’s Name

I didn’t believe Lily at first.

I didn’t want to.

But she knew things no stranger could know.

The yellow blanket Emily had been wrapped in.

The small birthmark behind her right knee.

The middle name I had removed from the original paperwork because I thought it belonged to a woman who had abandoned her.

Lily.

My sister.

Emily’s mother.

I sat across from her in an empty family waiting room.

“You gave her to me?”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

Lily had worked as a records clerk at Vale Women’s Center.

She had discovered that Nathan Vale wasn’t simply altering billing codes.

Birth certificates, adoption records, and parental identities were being changed.

Sometimes biological parents disappeared from paperwork.

Sometimes adoptive families appeared before legal approvals had been completed.

Lily had copied files.

Then she became pregnant by Michael Reed.

Michael died before Emily was born.

Lily believed the clinic knew she had evidence.

So she arranged for me to take Emily temporarily.

Then she disappeared.

“Temporarily?” I asked.

Lily looked down.

“I thought I’d come back.”

“Eight years, Lily.”

“I know.”

I stood.

“She calls me Mom.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get to walk in here and change that.”

Lily’s answer was quiet.

“I’m not asking to.”

That was the only reason I stayed in the room.

Margaret Cole Had Been Standing Beside Us the Whole Time

For days, we assumed Nathan Vale was responsible for everything.

Then Detective Bennett showed me an employee roster from the old clinic.

One name appeared beside nearly every altered record.

Margaret Cole.

I knew Margaret.

Everyone at Millbrook Community Hospital did.

She was the director of nursing.

She had visited my room twice.
