Part 2 of 3

Spencer.

My Husband Finally Learned What Happened

“Mallory, someone told me there was an incident at the office.”

I stared through the hospital window.

“Corinne struck our daughter. Maisie fell and hit her forehead.”

There was a long silence.

“What?”

“We’re at the hospital.”

His voice changed immediately.

“I’m coming.”

He arrived less than half an hour later.

When Spencer saw the small bandage above Maisie’s eyebrow, he stopped in the doorway.

For the first time in years, my confident husband looked completely lost.

He crouched beside her.

“Hey, bug.”

He reached toward her cheek.

Maisie instinctively moved closer to me.

Spencer froze.

Slowly, he lowered his hand.

That tiny movement from our daughter seemed to affect him more than anything I could have said.

Later, after Maisie fell asleep beside me, Spencer spoke quietly.

“I suspended Corinne. Human Resources is opening an investigation tomorrow.”

I looked at him.

“That isn’t enough.”

“Mallory—”

“Our six-year-old asked me whether she deserved what happened to her.”

He looked away.

My phone vibrated.

A message from my father appeared.

“Phase one completed. Hawthorne Capital guarantees remain suspended pending further instruction.”

I locked my screen before Spencer could see it.

There was something about his company he had never fully understood.

And I had kept that secret for seven years.

The $4.8 Million Secret

Seven years earlier, Meridian Grid had not been a successful company occupying three floors of a glass building in downtown Charlotte.

It had twelve employees.

It had unpaid invoices.

It had creditors calling almost every morning.

And Spencer had been dangerously close to watching his dream disappear.

We were newly married then.

I remember finding him asleep at his desk one morning because he had been too exhausted to drive home.

He was thirty-one, ambitious, proud, and terrified.

“I can fix this,” he kept telling me.

But determination could not pay his employees.

So I went to the one person I knew could help.

My father, Conrad Hawthorne.

He had spent decades building Hawthorne Capital into a private investment company.

When I explained Spencer’s situation, Dad asked one question.

“Do you believe in him?”

“Yes.”

My father studied me for a long moment.

Then he agreed to provide approximately $4.8 million in financing and investment support.

But he attached conditions.

The money was structured through Hawthorne Capital, which received a 51 percent controlling position under specific protective terms until several guarantees and obligations were satisfied.

And I was designated as the representative for those interests.

Spencer knew an investment group had rescued Meridian Grid.

He knew the financing came through Hawthorne Capital.

But the structure had been handled by lawyers and financial advisers while Spencer fought to keep his business alive.

He never understood how much control sat behind those documents.

And I never used it.

My father once told me:

“I’m not trying to own your husband’s dream. I’m making sure my daughter can never be pushed out of the life she helped build.”

At the time, I thought he was being overly protective.

Seven years later, I finally understood.

Spencer Discovered Who Owned the Leverage

The next morning, Spencer texted me.

“Banks are reviewing Meridian’s credit facilities. Do you know anything about this?”

I didn’t answer.

Five minutes later another message appeared.

“Who actually controls Hawthorne Capital’s position?”

Then came a third.

“I spoke to the attorney who structured the original deal. He told me I need to ask you.”

That afternoon, Spencer came home early.

Maisie was coloring at the kitchen island.

Neither of us said anything until she went upstairs.

Then Spencer turned toward me.

His face was pale.

“It’s you, isn’t it?”

“What is?”

“The representative for the controlling interest.”

I held his gaze.

“Yes.”

He took a step backward.

“The money that saved Meridian…”

“Came from my family.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You knew Hawthorne Capital invested.”

“I didn’t know you controlled the position.”

“You never wanted to know much about where the rescue came from. You were too busy telling everyone you had saved the company by yourself.”

He looked stunned.

Then something else appeared in his expression.

Fear.

“You could ruin Meridian.”

I shook my head.

“I could also protect it.”
