“That you two had some problems and you needed space.”

“Did he contact the company?”

“Yes.”

I waited.

“Karen.”

“He asked for access to several files.”

I pulled the hotel notepad toward me.

“Which files?”

I wrote them down as she read them.

Shareholder structure.

Stock certificates.

Executive voting authority.

Then she stopped.

“There’s one more.”

“What?”

“An old power of attorney.”

I knew exactly which one.

I’d signed it years earlier for a specific transaction.

“That expired fourteen months ago.”

“I know.”

“When did he access it?”

Keyboard clicks came through the line.

“8:32 this morning, our time.”

Brian had barely gotten home before he started.

Then Karen made a small sound.

“What?”

“Someone tried to change the recovery email on your administrator account.”

“To what?”

She read it.

It belonged to Brian.

I leaned back in the chair.

This wasn’t about punishing me for refusing to give him shares.

Thailand had given him something more useful.

Time.

If I couldn’t travel, couldn’t receive verification codes, and couldn’t reliably contact my own company, Brian could tell everyone whatever he wanted.

At 10:06, he did.

An email went to senior management from my personal account.

“I am currently experiencing an emotional crisis and will remain overseas while I recover.”

I read it twice.

The next paragraph said I was voluntarily stepping away from daily management.

Then came the request.

A special management meeting.

Brian wanted temporary authority to act on my behalf.

Karen asked:

“Should I shut down his access?”

I looked at Michael.

He shook his head.

My attorney, whom we’d brought into the call, asked:

“Jennifer, I can stop the meeting.”

I read Brian’s email one more time.

He had already told everyone I was unstable.

If we stopped him now, he’d know I was communicating.

“No.”

Karen sounded surprised.

“No?”

“Schedule it.”

“Jennifer—”

“Give him the meeting.”

Michael leaned toward the speaker.

“But don’t give him anything else.”

Karen understood.

“You want him to think you’re still cut off.”

I folded Brian’s note and placed it inside my laptop bag.

“That’s exactly what I want.”

The Camera Showed Brian Carrying My Phone

That afternoon, hotel security brought me into a small office.

They had found the footage.

At 4:21 a.m., Brian walked out of our room carrying my handbag.

At 4:38, Susan came down with Lily.

My daughter was sleepy and holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

At 4:44, Brian returned.

He handed Susan something.

My passport.

Then he looked down at my phone in his other hand.

The security manager paused the video.

“Is that your device?”

“Yes.”

“And the passport?”

“Mine.”

He saved the footage.

I asked him to preserve the original.

Then came another record.

The airline confirmed my reservation had been canceled before Brian checked out of the hotel.

That mattered.

He couldn’t claim he’d taken my passport by accident.

He couldn’t claim he’d thought I was taking another flight.

Someone had deliberately removed the flight I was supposed to use and then taken the document I needed to replace it.

By Wednesday afternoon, my temporary travel documentation was ready.

Brian still didn’t know.

He sent another message from my account that evening.

The special meeting would be Thursday at nine-thirty.

I boarded my flight home.

Brian Had One Day to Take 61 Percent of My Life

I landed late Wednesday and did not go to my house.

My attorney met me near the airport.

“Lily is physically safe,” she told me. “We’ve confirmed she’s at your home with Brian and Susan.”

My knees almost gave out from relief.

“Can I get her?”

“We’re working on it.”

Because Brian had removed Lily from the hotel without telling me, kept my identification and phone, canceled my travel, and then told other people I’d voluntarily remained abroad, my attorney had already started an emergency family-court request.

By Thursday morning, a temporary arrangement was in place.

My sister picked Lily up.

I didn’t go with her.

I wanted to.

Instead, at 9:27, I was standing inside the stairwell one floor below my own conference room.

Karen texted me.

BRIAN IS HERE.

Then:

HE HAS A DOCUMENT WITH YOUR SIGNATURE.

I stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

HE’S SAYING YOU SIGNED IT IN THAILAND.

My attorney looked at me.

“Don’t go in yet.”

We waited.

At 9:41, Karen called and put the phone on mute.

Through the speaker, I heard my husband.

“Jennifer isn’t coming back right now.”

A board member asked:

“Have you spoken to her today?”

“Not today. She’s not in a condition to deal with this.”

My attorney glanced at me.

Brian continued.

“She signed temporary authority over to me before things got worse.”

Paper moved across the conference table.

Someone asked:

“This is Jennifer’s signature?”

Brian answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

“She signed this herself?”

“Yes.”

My attorney held up one finger.

Wait.

Another voice asked:

“And she signed it on Monday morning while you were both in Phuket?”

“Correct.”

My attorney lowered her hand.

Now.

I Walked In While My Husband Was Explaining Why I Couldn’t Come Home

I opened the conference-room door.

Brian was standing at the far end of the table with one hand resting on the back of my chair.

He looked toward the door.

His mouth stayed slightly open.

Nobody spoke.

I walked in, pulled out the chair opposite him, and put my laptop bag on the table.

“Sorry I’m late.”

Brian stared at me.

“Jennifer?”

“You were explaining where I am.”

His eyes moved immediately toward my attorney.
