Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband Took His Mistress’s Side Instead of Comforting Our Five-Year-Old, Blamed Our Little Girl for Ruining an Expensive Dress, Handed Me Divorce Papers, and Ordered Me to Leave Without My Child—So I Signed My Name, Picked Up My Daughter, and Quietly Told Him We’d See Each Other Again Before the Night Was Over

Part 2 of 3

She fell asleep quickly with an ice pack against her cheek.

I kissed her forehead.

Then I walked downstairs to the utility room.

Most people saw nothing unusual there.

Shelves.

Cleaning supplies.

An old toolbox.

I knelt beside the washing machine and lifted one loose floor panel.

The encrypted phone was exactly where I’d left it six years earlier.

Still fully charged.

Still waiting.

I entered a sixteen-digit code.

Only one contact appeared.

Thomas Cardenas.

He answered before the second ring.

“Miss Crawford.”

He had never stopped calling me that.

“Is your father with you?”

“He’s in New York, but I can reach him immediately.”

I looked toward the ceiling.

Toward the bedroom where Hazel was sleeping.

“There’s no reason to hide anymore.”

Silence.

Then Thomas spoke carefully.

“Are you authorizing full withdrawal of Crawford family guarantees?”

“Yes.”

“Corporate audit?”

“Immediately.”

“Federal referral?”

I remembered Hazel’s blood on my blouse.

“Send everything.”

Thomas didn’t ask another question.

“I’ll begin now.”

The call lasted less than three minutes.

When I placed the phone back into its compartment, my hands weren’t shaking.

For the first time in years, they were completely steady.

Divorce Papers

Less than an hour later Spencer found me in the breakfast room.

He tossed a folder onto the table.

“Sign it.”

I opened it.

A divorce agreement.

He had prepared it long before today.

That surprised me less than the custody section.

Hazel would remain with him.

I looked up.

“Why?”

Cassandra answered instead.

She had followed him into the room.

“Because she’ll be adorable at the Grand Pinnacle Gala tonight.”

She smiled as though discussing flower arrangements.

“I want her carrying my train.”

I stared at the page for another moment.

Then I crossed out the custody paragraph with one black line.

Signed my own name.

Closed the folder.

Spencer looked confused.

“That’s it?”

“You’re just leaving?”

I picked up my sleeping daughter.

“We’ll see each other again tonight.”

Neither of them understood why I sounded so calm.

Neither of them knew the phone call had already been made.

By the time they reached the Grand Pinnacle Gala, the first dominoes would already be falling.

The Grand Pinnacle Gala

By the time Hazel and I arrived at the Grand Pinnacle Hotel, she had changed into a simple cream-colored dress.

She still wore a light cape.

Not because it matched the outfit.

Because one side of her face was badly swollen.

I knelt beside her in the back seat before we got out.

“You don’t have to smile tonight.”

She nodded.

“Can I stay with you?”

“Every second.”

Outside, camera flashes lit up the entrance.

Executives.

Politicians.

Investors.

People Spencer spent years trying to impress.

He spotted us before we reached the carpet.

A slow smile spread across his face.

He thought I had come back to apologize.

Cassandra stepped forward in a sparkling silver gown.

She looked Hazel up and down.

“Perfect.”

She pointed at the hem of her dress.

“You’ll carry this once we’re inside.”

Hazel hid behind my leg.

“No.”

Cassandra frowned.

“Excuse me?”

I answered for my daughter.

“She won’t be touching your dress.”

Spencer’s expression hardened.

“Don’t start another scene.”

He lowered his voice.

“You’re lucky I even let you come.”

I looked at him without speaking.

He mistook silence for surrender.

He always had.

One Last Humiliation

A photographer asked Spencer and Cassandra to stand together.

They immediately moved into position.

Hazel and I remained a few feet away.

Cassandra suddenly glanced down at her shoes.

“Actually…”

She smiled at Hazel.

“Your little accident this afternoon ruined my day.”

She lifted one expensive heel.

A faint smudge of dirt clung to the leather.

“Since you’re already here, kneel down and clean these.”

The people nearby stopped talking.

Nobody moved.

Hazel gripped my hand so tightly that her fingers hurt.

She whispered,

“Mommy… did I do something bad again?”

Before I could answer, two security officers approached.

One of them looked uncomfortable.

“Ma’am, we’re receiving complaints.”

He looked at Spencer.

Then at Cassandra.

Then at Hazel’s bruised face.

His eyes lingered there for a moment.

I surprised everyone.

“It’s alright.”
