Part 2 of 3

For almost a minute, neither of us spoke.

Then she said something that probably saved me from spending the next week sending desperate messages to my husband.

“Then you get one.”

The Envelope I Did Not Ask Permission to Open

I went home with Diana two days later.

Aaron did not come to the hospital.

He called once to ask when I would be discharged.

He did not ask how Henry was doing.

When Diana drove me past our house so I could collect a few things, Aaron left a suitcase by the front door.

My maternity clothes were folded inside.

So were my toiletries.

On top was Henry’s unopened package of newborn diapers.

I stood on the porch staring at it.

Diana came up behind me.

“Don’t go inside.”

“My daughters are in there.”

“I know.”

Aaron had already arranged for the girls to stay with his mother during the first few days.

He said I needed rest.

I called them that evening.

Lily asked why I wasn’t coming home with the baby.

I told her I was staying with Aunt Diana while I recovered.

It was the closest thing to the truth I could give a seven-year-old.

The next morning, Diana placed a small DNA testing kit on her kitchen counter.

“You sure?” she asked.

“Yes.”

Getting Henry’s sample was easy.

Aaron’s was harder.

Then I remembered the overnight bag Diana had picked up from our house before everything fell apart.

Inside was Aaron’s old travel toothbrush.

He had used it when he stayed at the hospital with me the night before Henry was born.

I stared at it for a long time before putting it into the sample bag.

I hated that I was doing it.

Not because I was afraid of the answer.

Because after eight years of marriage, four daughters, one newborn son, and thousands of ordinary days together, I was collecting DNA from my husband’s toothbrush to prove that I had not betrayed him.

Diana sealed the package.

“Once you know, you know.”

“I already know.”

“I mean once he knows.”

I looked at her.

“That part isn’t going to fix this.”

She did not argue.

The results came seven days later.

I was sitting at Diana’s kitchen table feeding Henry when the email appeared.

I nearly ignored it because I was tired and thought it was another hospital bill.

Then I saw the laboratory name.

I opened the report with one hand.

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.99%.

Aaron was Henry’s biological father.

I read the number three times.

Diana came into the kitchen carrying a basket of clean towels.

“Is that it?”

I turned the phone toward her.

She looked at the screen.

“Well.”

That was all she said.

I expected to feel relieved.

Instead, I looked down at Henry.

His little shirt had shifted near his shoulder.

I could just see the edge of the crescent-shaped mark.

The mark that had sent my husband out of a hospital room.

I saved the report.

Then I sent it to Aaron.

No explanation.

No accusation.

No message asking him to come back.

Just the result.

His first call came thirty-eight seconds later.

I watched the phone ring.

Then stop.

He called again.

And again.

On the fourth call, Diana looked at me.

“You going to answer?”

I picked up.

For several seconds, Aaron said nothing.

I could hear him breathing.

Then his voice cracked.

“Elena.”

I waited.

“I saw it.”

“Okay.”

“I was wrong.”

Henry stirred against my chest.

I adjusted his blanket.

“Yes.”

“I’m coming over.”

“No.”

There was a pause.

“Please.”

“Not yet.”

“I need to see you.”

I looked at the DNA report still glowing on the screen.

“You needed to see me in the hospital.”

He went quiet.

Twenty minutes later, Aaron was standing on Diana’s front porch anyway.

His eyes were red.

He had not shaved.

For once, he did not look angry.

He looked frightened.

“I’m sorry.”

I kept Henry against my chest.

Aaron looked at our son.

This time, he stepped closer.

I stepped back.

He stopped immediately.

“I made a terrible mistake.”

“You made a choice.”

“Elena, please.”

I reached down and gently moved Henry’s shirt until the little crescent mark was visible.

Aaron stared at it.

Then I asked the question he should have asked before he accused me.

“If Henry is your son, why does he have Michael’s birthmark?”

Aaron looked at the mark again.

This time, instead of looking at me, he reached for his phone.

The Call Michael Would Not Answer

Aaron stared at Henry’s birthmark, then searched Michael’s name and pressed call.

It rang until voicemail.

He called again.

Nothing.

On the third attempt, Michael answered.

Aaron put the phone on speaker.

“I need to ask you something.”

Michael was quiet.

“Okay.”

“Henry has your birthmark.”

Another silence followed, long enough that Diana looked at me.

Aaron’s face tightened.

“Michael?”

“Where are you?”

“At Diana’s. Why?”

Michael exhaled.

“Don’t do this over the phone.”

Aaron lowered the phone slowly.

“Do what?”

Michael did not answer the question.

“Come to my house.”

The call ended.

Aaron looked at me as though I might explain his best friend’s reaction.

I could not.

An hour later, Diana stayed with Henry while Aaron and I drove to Michael’s house. I sat by the window with my arms folded. Aaron tried twice to apologize.

I did not answer either time.

Michael opened the door before we knocked.

He looked exhausted.

On his kitchen table sat a cardboard box filled with old photographs.

Aaron stopped beside it.

“What is this?”

Michael pulled out a chair.

“Sit down.”

“No. Tell me why my son has the same mark you do.”

Michael looked at me first.

“Elena, I’m sorry.”

Aaron stepped forward.

“Why are you apologizing to her?”

“Because none of this is what you think.”

“Then explain it.”

Michael reached into the box and removed an old photograph.

I recognized Aaron’s father, Richard, immediately. He was younger, standing beside a lake, one arm around two men.

Michael placed the photograph on the table.

Near Richard’s shoulder blade was a dark crescent.

The room went completely still.

Aaron picked up the picture.

“What is that?”

Michael sat down.
