Happy Soul Moral Stories

“My Husband Secretly Took $18,000 From Our Baby Fund While I Was 39 Weeks Pregnant to Send His Mother to Hawaii—But While I Was in the Hospital Waiting to Give Birth, His Phone Lit Up With a Message From Her: ‘Did Allison Notice the Transfer?’ I Looked at Him and Asked, ‘What Else Haven’t You Told Me?’—And the Way He Reached for His Phone Made Me Check Our Account Immediately”

Part 2 of 3

“Claire, just wait.”

I held up one finger.

He stopped.

When a representative came on, I explained that I needed to stop a pending transfer and restrict outgoing transfers from the savings account.

There were verification questions.

A security code.

A few minutes on hold.

My contractions kept coming while the hold music played.

The nurse returned once and found me breathing through one with a bank representative on speakerphone.

She looked at Ryan.

Then at me.

She didn’t ask.

The transfer was still pending and could be stopped.

I changed my online banking password.

I added additional verification.

I asked what other access could be restricted.

When I finished, the $18,312.44 was still there.

That number looked different now.

Not like savings.

Like something I had pulled back through a closing door.

Ryan was furious.

He kept his voice low because we were in a hospital.

“You locked me out?”

“I stopped you from emptying it.”

“You had no right to do that without talking to me.”

I stared at him.

He heard himself.

His face changed slightly.

“That’s different.”

“Explain how.”

He walked to the window again.

I waited.

Eventually, he said:

“Mom thinks we’ve been unrealistic about how long you’re planning to stay home.”

I didn’t answer.

“Your job is good, Claire. You have benefits. You can’t just disappear for months.”

“We planned twelve weeks.”

“You talked about maybe going part-time afterward.”

“We talked about it.”

“Exactly.”

He turned around.

“Mom thinks if there’s this huge pile of money sitting there, you’re going to feel like you can make decisions that aren’t practical.”

I put both hands over my stomach.

Lily shifted under my ribs.

“So your solution was to remove the money?”

“Temporarily.”

“So I couldn’t use it.”

“So we’d have to be realistic.”

There it was.

The Hawaii trip was almost beside the point.

They hadn’t only spent money.

They had planned to change the choices available to me.

“Did your mother suggest the second transfer?”

Ryan didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Ryan.”

“We discussed it.”

“While I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant.”

“You’re making it sound worse than it was.”

“What did you think would happen when I saw the account was empty?”

He looked at the floor.

“By then, Lily would be here.”

That answer stayed with me.

By then, Lily would be here.

I would be recovering.

Tired.

Dependent on the savings we’d made together.

And the money would already be gone.

I reached for the call button beside my bed.

Ryan frowned.

“What are you doing?”

“I need the nurse.”

That was my first real victory that day.

The second transfer never left the account.

I still had $18,312.44.

And Ryan had just explained exactly why he’d tried to take it.

His Mother Arrived Before Our Daughter Did

Diane arrived at the hospital shortly after four.

I hadn’t invited her.

She walked into my room carrying a beige tote bag and wearing a light linen outfit that looked like she’d come directly from the airport.

Apparently, she had.

Megan had stayed in Hawaii.

Diane had flown home early after Ryan told her the second transfer had been stopped.

She hugged her son first.

Then she looked at me.

“How are you feeling?”

“I’m in labor.”

She set her bag down.

“I know everyone’s emotional right now.”

I watched her pull a chair closer.

“Why did you ask Ryan if I’d noticed the transfer?”

Diane glanced at him.

He looked away.

“Because I knew you might misunderstand.”

“What was there to misunderstand?”

“Ryan contributes to that account.”

“So do I.”

“Of course you do.”

Her tone stayed calm.

That somehow made it worse.

“But he’s worked very hard, Claire. He’s allowed to help his mother.”

“With eighteen thousand dollars we saved for our baby?”

She pressed her lips together.

“I gave Ryan everything when he was young.”

“Then he could have asked me.”

“And you would have said no.”

I looked at Ryan.

Same sentence.

Same reasoning.

Diane adjusted the strap on her handbag.

“I don’t think a mother should have to beg her son for something after everything she’s done for him.”

A contraction started before I could answer.

I gripped the bed rail.

Ryan moved toward me.

“Breathe.”

I turned my face away.

The contraction kept building.

The fetal monitor changed rhythm.

A nurse came in.

Then another.

Diane stood.

Ryan began explaining the argument to the nurse as if that mattered.

“She’s just really upset right now.”

I looked at him.

“Stop.”

He kept going.

“This whole money thing happened today and she’s—”

“Ryan, stop.”

He did.

I looked at the nurse.

“I don’t want him in here.”

Ryan stared at me.

“What?”

“Please have him leave.”

“Claire, come on.”

The nurse stepped between us.

Her voice was polite.

“Sir, she has asked you to leave the room.”

“I’m her husband.”

“She’s the patient.”

Diane stood immediately.

“This is ridiculous.”

The nurse opened the door.

“Both of you, please.”

Ryan looked at me one last time.

I didn’t change my mind.

The door closed behind them.

Less than forty minutes later, Lily’s heart rate dropped and didn’t recover the way the doctor wanted.

Everything after that moved quickly.

Consent forms.

Bright lights.

Someone removing my jewelry.

A nurse putting a cap over my hair.

I remember asking whether my daughter was okay.

I remember the anesthesiologist telling me exactly where to place my arms.

And I remember hearing Lily cry at 8:47 p.m.

She was seven pounds, one ounce.

The nurse brought her close to my face.

I touched her cheek with one finger.

For several minutes, there was no bank account.

No Hawaii.

No Ryan.

Just my daughter breathing against me.

Megan Brought Me What Ryan Wouldn’t Show Me

The next morning, Megan came to the hospital.

She had flown back overnight.

She looked terrible.

She stood beside my bed for almost a minute before speaking.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily was asleep in the clear bassinet beside me.

“Did you know?” I asked.

“Not at first.”

Megan sat down.

She told me Diane had presented the trip as something Ryan wanted to give her.

Megan assumed he had used his own money.

Then, in Hawaii, Diane started talking about how I would have to return to work sooner than I’d planned.

Megan asked what she meant.

That was when Diane showed her part of the conversation with Ryan.

Megan handed me her phone.

There weren’t hundreds of messages.

There didn’t need to be.

One from Diane said:

“Once the buffer isn’t sitting there, she’ll have to look at the situation practically.”

Ryan had replied:

“I know. Just don’t mention anything until my year-end commission comes in.”

Another message came two days later.

“Did Claire notice the transfer?”

Ryan:

“No. Leave it alone.”

Then, the night before I went into labor:

“Move the rest tomorrow. Better to do it before she’s home with the baby.”

I handed Megan’s phone back.
