Part 1 of 3

The House Was Too Quiet

The first thing Kendra Winslow noticed when she pulled into the driveway was that her daughter’s bicycle was lying on its side near the front porch.

That was unusual.

Eight-year-old Lila treated that little lavender bicycle like it was made of glass. She always parked it carefully beside the hydrangeas, kicked down the stand, and hung her helmet from the left handlebar.

That afternoon, the helmet was on the grass.

Kendra sat behind the wheel for a second, staring at it.

She had just returned to Spokane, Washington, after a two-day conference in Seattle. Her flight had landed early, and she had decided not to tell her husband. She wanted to surprise Lila by picking her up from school.

But when she called the school office, the secretary told her Adrian had already signed Lila out.

Something in Kendra’s chest tightened.

She grabbed her bag and hurried inside.

“Lila?”

No answer.

The living room looked perfect. Too perfect.

Then she heard Adrian’s voice from the back of the house.

“You need to understand that actions have consequences.”

Kendra stopped walking.

A softer voice followed.

“I already told you I didn’t do it.”

Lila.

Kendra moved toward the family room.

What she saw made every thought in her head disappear.

The Dress on the Floor

Lila was sitting alone on a dining chair near the window, still wearing her school uniform.

Her eyes were red from crying, but she was trying hard not to make another sound.

Adrian stood several feet away with his arms crossed.

Beside him was a woman Kendra knew immediately.

Corinne Vale.

Corinne had worked with Adrian at a luxury property development firm for almost three years. She was stylish, confident, and had become increasingly present in their lives over the past six months.

Office dinners.

Weekend calls.

“Emergency” meetings.

Kendra had noticed.

She simply had not accused anyone of anything without proof.

On the rug lay a champagne-colored evening gown.

One side had been torn badly near the waist.

Corinne turned when Kendra entered.

Her face changed.

“Kendra. I thought you were coming home tomorrow.”

Kendra ignored her.

She walked straight to Lila and crouched down.

“Sweetheart, what happened?”

Lila looked at Adrian before answering.

That tiny glance told Kendra more than words could.

Adrian stepped forward.

“She ruined Corinne’s dress. It cost twelve thousand dollars.”

Kendra slowly stood.

“Why was a twelve-thousand-dollar dress in our house?”

No one answered immediately.

Then Corinne sighed.

“There’s a charity gala tonight. Adrian said I could get ready here because my apartment is being renovated.”

Kendra looked at her husband.

“You invited her into our home while I was away?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“That isn’t the issue.”

“It became the issue the moment you decided it wasn’t worth mentioning.”

Lila’s Side of the Story

Kendra turned back to her daughter.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Lila swallowed.

“I came home, and Ms. Vale was upstairs.”

Corinne interrupted.

“She was told not to go into the guest room.”

Kendra lifted one hand.

“I asked my daughter.”

Corinne went silent.

Lila continued.

“I went upstairs because my science folder was in your office. When I came back down, the dress was on the floor. Ms. Vale started yelling and said I did it.”

“Did you touch the dress?”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Kendra, she’s eight. Kids panic when they know they’ve done something wrong.”

Kendra stared at him.

For nine years of marriage, Adrian had praised Lila for being unusually truthful.

Now, suddenly, his daughter’s word meant nothing.

“What proof do you have?” Kendra asked.

Adrian pointed toward the dress.

“She was the only other person upstairs.”

Lila’s expression changed.

She looked toward the hallway.

Then she whispered something so quietly Kendra almost missed it.

“Mom, Grandpa’s clock.”

The Clock No One Remembered

Kendra frowned.

“What about it?”

Lila leaned closer.

“The camera.”

Adrian’s face went blank.

Corinne looked confused.

That was when Kendra remembered.

Three months earlier, someone had repeatedly opened the cabinet where Kendra stored documents related to her late father’s estate.

Nothing had disappeared, but papers had been moved.

Her older brother had suggested installing a small security camera.

Kendra disliked the idea of cameras inside her home, so she had installed only one.

It was hidden inside an old wooden mantel clock her father had given her.

The clock sat on a bookshelf outside Kendra’s upstairs office.

Its lens covered most of the hallway and part of the open guest-room doorway.

Adrian had been traveling when the camera was installed.

Kendra had completely forgotten about it.

Apparently, Lila had not.

Kendra walked toward the staircase.

Adrian followed.

“Kendra, wait.”

She kept walking.

“Why?”

“Because we don’t need to turn this into some huge investigation.”

She looked over her shoulder.

“You already decided our daughter was guilty without investigating anything.”

He had no answer.

Forty-Seven Minutes of Truth

Kendra retrieved the memory card and inserted it into her laptop.

The four of them gathered around the kitchen island.

The first few minutes showed nothing important.

At 3:11 p.m., Corinne walked upstairs carrying the gown.

At 3:18, Lila came home.

At 3:22, Lila walked past the hallway toward Kendra’s office.

Less than a minute later, she returned downstairs.

She never entered the guest room.

Kendra paused the video.

“She didn’t go inside.”
