Part 2 of 3

She explained how she had helped build the company.

She explained that the house had belonged to her parents.

She explained how her inheritance had paid for the vehicle Thomas proudly drove every day.

Rebecca listened carefully.

Finally, she leaned forward.

“Your husband made one serious mistake.”

Helen smiled sadly.

“Only one?”

Rebecca returned the smile.

“He underestimated you.”

The Secret Investigation

For nearly two weeks, Helen behaved exactly as Thomas expected.

She made coffee.

She ironed shirts.

She listened as he talked excitedly about his upcoming business trip.

Meanwhile, every evening, she sat alone at the kitchen table, reading documents.

She discovered airline reservations.

She discovered luxury hotel bookings.

She discovered expensive gifts.

Then she found messages.

One message read:

“I can’t wait to explore Rome with someone who still knows how to enjoy life.”

Another said:

“Helen doesn’t notice anything.”

Then she discovered the message that changed everything.

“When I return, I’ll take care of the house situation.”

The house.

Her house.

The home she had loved and protected for more than thirty years.

Calmly, she printed every document and placed them into a folder.

For the first time in years, her tears were no longer tears of sadness.

They were tears of freedom.

Rome Without Helen

The morning Thomas left, he rolled his suitcase into the kitchen.

“Don’t wait for my calls,” he said.

Helen calmly poured coffee into her cup.

“Have a pleasant journey.”

He seemed surprised by her composure.

“And try not to create any problems while I’m gone.”

Helen looked at him.

“You should probably take your own advice.”

Two hours after his flight departed, Rebecca filed the necessary legal documents.

That same afternoon, Helen visited Thomas’s office.

The receptionist, Linda Pierce, had worked there for more than twenty years.

One glance at Helen’s face told her everything.

Without saying a word, Linda opened a drawer and removed a small flash drive.

“I hoped you would never need this,” she whispered.

Inside were years of records.

Hidden expenses.

Personal purchases.

Messages Thomas had tried to erase.

Helen stared at the device in her hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

Linda sighed.

“Because I wasn’t sure you were ready to hear the truth.”

Three days later, Thomas’s bank cards stopped working.

Then his cheerful photographs disappeared from social media.

Soon afterward, his calls began arriving.

Helen ignored all of them.

Finally, she sent a single message.

“Please contact my attorney.”

The Door That Remained Closed

When Thomas returned home, he arrived alone.

Vanessa was gone.

The confidence he had carried with him had disappeared as well.

He stepped onto the front porch and found legal documents waiting for him.

Moments later, he pounded on the front door.

“Helen! Open the door!”

Instead, her voice came through the security speaker.

“Please lower your voice.”

“Where’s the car?”

“It was purchased with my inheritance,” Helen answered calmly. “My attorney is handling everything.”

Thomas stared at the camera.

“Who do you think you are?”

Helen paused.

Then she answered.

“I’m the woman you stopped seeing a long time ago.”

A Family Forced to Face the Truth

The legal process was difficult.

Thomas insisted that Helen had misunderstood everything.
