Moral Stories Silent Heroes

My Husband Ignored 23 Calls While I Gave Birth to Our Premature Twins at 32 Weeks. Five Days Later, He Walked Into the NICU With His Pregnant Mistress and His Mother, Dropped a DNA Test Kit Beside My Hospital Bed, and Said, “I’m Not Paying for Another Man’s Kids.” I Calmly Agreed to the Test. The Next Morning, the Results Proved Both Babies Were His—but a 34-Year-Old Family Secret Raised a Shocking Question About Who His Pregnant Mistress Really Was…

Part 2 of 3

“The paternity results are conclusive,” he announced.

Blake straightened.

“Well?”

The doctor looked directly at him.

“You are the biological father of both children. The probability of paternity exceeds 99.99 percent.”

For the first time since arriving at the hospital, Blake had nothing to say.

Beverly stared at the report.

“Are you certain?”

“The laboratory findings are clear,” Dr. Foster replied.

I looked at Blake.

“You wanted proof. Now you have it.”

He avoided my eyes.

But the doctor wasn’t finished.

“Mr. Prescott, during the authorized review of your historical medical information, an older family document was flagged for verification. It raises a question that may be important to your family.”

He explained that the document was not proof of anyone’s biological relationship and would need independent confirmation.

Then he addressed Taryn.

“Ms. Bellamy, may I ask how far along you are?”

She looked confused.

“Fourteen weeks. Why?”

Dr. Foster paused.

“There appears to be a possible connection between your family records and an older birth record associated with Mrs. Prescott. I cannot establish that connection without additional testing.”

Beverly’s coffee cup trembled in her hand.

“What birth record?” Blake demanded.

His mother slowly covered her mouth.

And before anyone else could speak, Beverly began to cry.

The Daughter Who Disappeared Thirty-Four Years Ago

We moved to a quiet family room after Beverly asked to speak privately.

Taryn stood near the window, visibly unsettled.

“My mother’s name was Evelyn Bellamy,” she said. “She raised me in Flagstaff. She passed away when I was nineteen.”

Beverly looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.

“Evelyn was your mother?”

Taryn turned.

“You knew her?”

Beverly nodded.

Then she told us a story none of us had ever heard.

Thirty-four years earlier, before marrying Blake’s father, Beverly had been a young woman working at a real estate office in Phoenix.

She had fallen in love with a mechanic named Walter Bellamy.

Their relationship ended when Beverly became engaged to a wealthy businessman, Thomas Prescott.

But before her wedding, Beverly discovered she was expecting Walter’s child.

She was terrified that Thomas and his family would reject her.

Walter wanted to help raise the baby.

Beverly refused.

She left Phoenix temporarily and gave birth to a daughter at a small private clinic.

For three days, she cared for the little girl.

Then she arranged for Walter’s sister, Evelyn, to raise her.

The baby had originally been named Amelia.

Evelyn later moved north and gave the child a new first name.

Beverly returned to Phoenix, married Thomas, and never told him about her daughter.

Two years later, Blake was born.

“I thought she would have a better life without me,” Beverly whispered.

Taryn’s face had gone pale.

“My birth certificate lists Evelyn as my mother. Nobody ever told me she raised me as her own.”

Beverly looked up.

“Did Evelyn ever call you Amelia?”

Taryn swallowed.

“She called me Amy when I was little. I thought it was just a nickname.”

Blake stood abruptly.

“This is ridiculous. You’re saying Taryn might be my sister?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Beverly began crying again.

“I don’t know for certain. But the dates, the names…”

Taryn stepped away from the window.

“Then we need to find out.”

The Truth About Blake’s Other Relationship

While everyone struggled to understand Beverly’s revelation, another uncomfortable truth emerged.

Taryn looked directly at me.

“Natalie, I need you to know something. Blake told me your marriage had ended.”

I stared at her.

“When?”

“Almost a year ago. He said you were living separately and waiting for the paperwork.”

I shook my head.

“We were living together until the night I went into labor.”

Taryn’s eyes widened.

“He told me you had already agreed to divorce.”

“Yesterday was the first time anyone mentioned divorce to me.”

She turned toward Blake.

“You lied to both of us?”

He ran a hand through his hair.

“This isn’t the time.”

“Then when would be the right time?” she asked.

Blake looked at his mother for support.

But Beverly was staring at the floor.

Taryn’s voice trembled.

“I’ve spent eleven months believing we were building a future together. Now I don’t even know whether we’re related.”

Blake reached toward her.

She stepped back.

“Please don’t touch me. I need answers before anything else.”

For the first time, I saw Taryn not as the woman who had arrived beside my husband, but as someone who had also been deceived.

That didn’t erase the hurt I felt.

But it changed the way I understood what had happened.

A Secret Is Not the Same as Proof

Later that afternoon, a hospital social worker helped Beverly and Taryn contact an independent genetic counseling service.

Dr. Foster carefully explained that old documents, shared names, and family memories could suggest a connection but could not confirm one.

The family would need verified records and appropriate genetic testing.

Beverly agreed to cooperate.

Taryn requested copies of her available birth and adoption documents.

Blake remained unusually quiet.

He had entered the hospital determined to question the identity of my children.

Now he was facing questions about his own family that he had never imagined asking.

Before leaving, Beverly approached me.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

“Natalie, I owe you an apology.”

I looked at her.

“For which part?”

She lowered her head.
