My Husband Forced Me and Our Five-Year-Old Daughter to Publicly Apologize to His Girlfriend at a Billionaires’ Gala—Moments Later, My Little Girl Ran Into the Host’s Arms Crying, “Grandpa… She’s the One Who Hurt Me,” and the Secret I Had Hidden for Six Years Left the Entire Ballroom Speechless

Part 2 of 3

He wanted the same child Vanessa had frightened to stand beside her and smile for wealthy strangers.

That was when the final piece of affection I had once felt for him disappeared.

I signed the separation agreement.

Grant’s eyebrows rose.

“That was easier than expected.”

“You have no idea how easy you have made this.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“And where will you go?”

I picked up Maisie’s coat.

“Home.”

Grant laughed as we walked toward the door.

“Your home is wherever someone feels sorry enough to let you stay.”

I paused and glanced back.

“Enjoy the gala, Grant. It may be the last invitation you receive for a very long time.”

The First Warning

By late afternoon, Grant’s carefully managed life had begun to unravel.

Several clients delayed their contracts with Whitaker Development.

A lender requested an immediate review of his company’s accounts.

Two major investors canceled private meetings without explanation.

Grant called me repeatedly, but I did not answer.

Vanessa experienced her own surprise at the exclusive spa where she had scheduled her gala preparations.

The manager informed her that the Whitaker corporate account could no longer be used.

When she protested, she noticed me sitting in a private lounge with my father’s attorney.

I was wearing a simple cream blouse and reviewing documents.

Vanessa marched toward me.

“What are you doing here?”

I slowly closed the folder in front of me.

“Having tea.”

“This club is for members.”

The manager stepped between us.

“Ms. Prescott is not merely a member. Her family owns the property.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she looked at me and laughed nervously.

“Her name is Whitaker. She is Grant’s unemployed wife.”

“Not anymore,” I replied.

The manager politely asked Vanessa to leave because the account attached to her reservation had been suspended.

She reached for her phone.

“Grant will fix this.”

I took another sip of tea.

“Grant has several problems to fix before he reaches yours.”

The Gala at the Bellmont Hotel

That night, the Prescott Foundation gala filled the Bellmont Hotel in Manhattan with business leaders, philanthropists and public figures from across the country.

Grant arrived in a rented luxury car with Vanessa beside him.

Despite the financial warnings he had received, he remained convinced that one conversation with my father would save his company.

He did not know that my father had quietly supported several of Whitaker Development’s earliest opportunities because I had once begged him to help my husband succeed.

Grant believed his achievements belonged entirely to him.

At eight o’clock, Maisie and I arrived.

I wore a midnight-blue velvet gown chosen by my father’s stylist. It was elegant but understated, with no visible designer label and no dramatic jewelry.

Maisie wore a soft ivory dress beneath a navy coat.

She held my hand tightly as cameras flashed near the hotel entrance.

Grant spotted us immediately.

His face hardened.

“Why are you dressed like that?” he demanded.

“We were invited.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You came to apologize, remember?”

Grant pointed toward the entrance steps.

“Do it here. Tell Vanessa that you and Maisie caused the entire problem.”

Several guests nearby slowed down to listen.

Maisie moved behind me.

“I’m scared of her,” she whispered.

I squeezed her hand.

“You don’t need to be scared anymore.”

Grant heard me.

“Stop filling her head with nonsense. Vanessa will soon be part of this family, and Maisie needs to accept that.”

A hotel security director approached us.

Grant immediately gestured toward me.

“This woman is not supposed to be here.”

The security director looked at me, then lowered his head respectfully.

“Ms. Prescott, your father is waiting inside.”

The confidence vanished from Grant’s face.

“Prescott?”

I offered him no explanation.

I simply entered the hotel with Maisie beside me.

The Child Who Ran Toward Safety

Inside the ballroom, Grant tried to approach several executives he knew.

One by one, they avoided him.

News of his financial review had already begun circulating, and no one wanted to be associated with a company under serious scrutiny.

Vanessa blamed me.

“She is doing this,” she whispered angrily. “I don’t know how, but she is ruining everything.”

Grant followed me across the ballroom.

“Sloane, stop whatever game you are playing.”

Maisie turned when she heard his voice.

Seeing Vanessa beside him caused her to panic.

She released my hand and ran through the crowd.

“Maisie!” I called.

At the far end of the ballroom, a pair of tall doors opened.
