Happy Soul Moral Stories

“My Husband Came Home at 12:47 A.M. on Our Wedding Anniversary and Said, ‘I Spent Our Anniversary With Claudia. We’ve Been Seeing Each Other for Almost a Year.’ I Looked at the Two Cold Plates and Burned-Down Candles—but I Didn’t Beg, Yell, or Ask Him to Stay. By Morning, His Clothes Were in Three Suitcases and Divorce Papers Were on the Kitchen Counter. Then He Saw What I’d Left Beside Them—and His First Panicked Message Told Me What He Had Been Doing Behind My Back Was Only the Beginning”

Part 2 of 3

Then she said something that changed my mind.

“Nathan and Claudia have more resources than you understand. You should think very carefully before you start threatening people’s homes.”

I closed the refrigerator.

“Your home?”

Her face changed slightly.

Three years earlier, Elaine had gotten into serious financial trouble after refinancing her house and making several bad investments. Nathan told me she was about to lose the property.

She needed $310,000.

Nathan couldn’t help her.

I could.

But Elaine had always been proud, and Nathan insisted she would never accept money directly from me.

So my attorney arranged a private investment agreement through an entity I controlled. Elaine stayed in the house without making payments while we worked out a long-term solution.

She never knew who had provided the money.

I looked at her.

“The investor who kept your house from foreclosure three years ago was me.”

Elaine stopped talking.

Monica looked from her mother to me.

“What?”

I opened the drawer beside the refrigerator and removed a folder.

I didn’t hand it over.

“I paid the debt that kept you in that house.”

Elaine stared at the folder.

“Nathan said it was an investment group.”

“It was structured through one.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because you were my family.”

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Elaine straightened.

“So now you’re going to take my house because you’re angry at Nathan?”

“No.”

I put the folder back.

“I’m going to have my attorney terminate the free-use arrangement according to the agreement. You’ll have whatever notice and protections the law gives you.”

Her mouth opened.

Monica stepped closer.

“Teresa, don’t do this tonight.”

I looked at both of them.

“You came into my house tonight and threatened me with Claudia’s money.”

Elaine grabbed her purse from the counter.

“You’ll regret this.”

I didn’t answer.

She left.

Monica stayed near the door.

For a moment, she looked like she might say something.

Instead, she followed her mother outside.

That night, I ate the leftover anniversary chicken standing at the kitchen counter.

There was enough for two people.

I heated one portion.

Claudia Tried to Make It Personal

Two days later, I was called into my supervisor’s office.

Claudia Mercer had filed a formal complaint.

She claimed I had used my professional access to target her after discovering she was involved with my husband.

My supervisor, David, closed the door.

“I need you to walk me through the timeline again.”

So I did.

When I’d first identified the transactions.

When Nathan’s name appeared.

When I’d disclosed the conflict.

When I’d learned about the affair.

When I’d submitted the supplemental report.

David listened without interrupting.

Then he turned his monitor toward me.

“You didn’t access anything after your recusal.”

“No.”

“No personal searches?”

“No.”

“No confidential material sent to your private accounts?”

“Absolutely not.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

I waited.

Then he said something I hadn’t expected.

“Your report wasn’t the beginning of this.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“Another review had already flagged several Mercer-linked vendors.”

He tapped the screen.

“What you found overlaps with a much larger investigation.”

“How much larger?”

He hesitated.

“Large enough that you need to stay completely away from it now.”

I understood.

But before I left, he gave me one number.

More than thirteen million dollars in transactions were under review.

My $700,000 trail had been a small piece.

Nathan’s name appeared elsewhere too.

One document connected him to a transfer worth nearly two million dollars.

I didn’t feel vindicated.

I sat in my car in the parking garage for ten minutes before starting the engine.

The next morning, Claudia contacted my attorney asking for a private meeting.

My attorney advised me not to go alone.

We met in a conference room at his office.

Claudia arrived wearing a cream coat and carrying a leather portfolio. She was older than I’d expected, maybe forty-five, composed and very polished.

She sat across from me.

“I think this has become unnecessarily ugly.”

I said nothing.

She looked at my attorney, then back at me.

“Nathan should have ended his marriage before becoming involved with me. I’ve told him that.”

“Okay.”

That seemed to irritate her.

“He wasn’t happy.”

I opened the folder in front of me.

“I’m not here to discuss whether Nathan was happy.”

Claudia leaned back.

“Then why are you here?”

I placed a single-page diagram on the table.

It showed Horizon and several connected vendors.

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“I’m here because you asked for this meeting.”

She looked at the paper.

“You have no idea what you’re looking at.”

“Then explain it.”

“Those are legitimate vendors.”

“Okay.”

“You keep saying okay.”

“Because I’m listening.”

She pushed the paper back toward me.

“Nathan told me he could handle all of this.”

My attorney stopped writing.

I looked at her.

“Handle what?”

Claudia’s eyes shifted toward him.

She picked up her purse.

“This meeting is over.”

She left less than a minute later.

My attorney waited until the door closed.

Then he looked at me.

“Don’t contact her again.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

He folded the diagram and placed it back into the file.

“And don’t contact Nathan about this either.”

I nodded.

I didn’t need to.

Nathan found me first.

“Tell Them Claudia Did This”

He was waiting beside my car after work.

His face looked different.

Not sad.

Scared.

“Teresa.”

I stopped several feet away.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“They froze accounts.”

I didn’t move.

“Whose?”

“Mine. Claudia’s. Horizon’s. I don’t even know how many.”

He stepped toward me.

“You have to tell them I didn’t know.”

“Tell who?”

“Whoever you’re working with.”

“I’m not working on it anymore.”

He stared at me.

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”
