Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband Asked Me to Meet Him at a Country Club to Sign Our Divorce Papers, But I Walked Into a Ballroom Filled With Champagne, Dozens of Guests, a Giant “WELCOME BACK TO FREEDOM, ETHAN!” Banner, and a Mother-in-Law Already Celebrating Everything She Believed Was About to Become His

Part 3 of 3

“Well…”

“He still has the Centurion cards.”

She smiled proudly.

“Those alone tell everyone where he stands.”

I reached into my folder.

A small black envelope rested inside.

I placed it on the table.

“Those accounts were canceled three months ago.”

Ethan finally looked up.

His face lost color.

“Claire…”

I met his eyes.

“Corporate cards.”

“Corporate account.”

“Corporate property.”

I slid the cancellation notice beside the envelope.

“Accounting requested their return after the quarterly review.”

Diane stared at her son.

“You told me they were still active.”

He didn’t answer.

She waited.

Still nothing.

The silence became heavier than any argument.

The Number No One Could Explain

I closed the folder.

For a moment, I thought we were finished.

Then Diane spoke again.

“Even if that’s true…”

She folded her arms.

“Ethan worked there for years.”

“He deserves something.”

I nodded once.

“You’re right.”

Everyone looked at me.

“He deserved his salary.”

I opened one final section of the folder.

A blue tab separated the documents.

I placed a single summary page in front of Ethan.

“This arrived after the internal audit.”

He didn’t touch it.

Neither did Diane.

I read the number aloud.

“Six hundred eighty-four thousand dollars.”

Several guests exchanged confused looks.

“What money?” Diane asked.

I turned the page toward her.

A spreadsheet showed transfer after transfer.

Every payment led to the same destination.

Mercer Family Ventures.

Diane’s expression froze.

The Company That Shouldn’t Have Existed

One guest quietly asked,

“What’s Mercer Family Ventures?”

Nobody answered.

I did.

“A company registered under Diane Mercer’s name.”

I pointed to the first transfer.

“This payment covered renovations on your Scottsdale house.”

The second.

“This one paid for the Range Rover.”

The third.

“This one cleared personal credit card balances.”

Another page.

Another transfer.

Another invoice.

No one spoke.

The quartet had stopped playing without anyone noticing.

Diane finally found her voice.

“Those were reimbursements.”

I looked at her.

“For what?”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I waited.

The room waited.

She couldn’t answer.

Ethan Finally Spoke

He rubbed both hands across his face.

For the first time in months, he looked directly at me.

“Claire…”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Let’s not do this here.”

I shook my head.

“You invited everyone.”

He swallowed.

“We can explain.”

“Then explain.”

Another long silence.

He looked toward his mother.

She looked back at him.

Neither spoke.

The audit summary remained between them.

The number—$684,000—sat in bold print at the top of the page.

No explanation appeared beneath it.

Because there wasn’t one.

The Celebration Ended Before Dessert

The ballroom doors opened.

Rebecca Collins walked inside carrying another slim folder.

She approached our table calmly.

“Claire.”

I stood.

She handed me one sheet of paper.

I read it once.

Then passed it to Ethan.

He scanned the first paragraph.

His shoulders dropped.

“Effective immediately…” he read quietly.

He stopped.

Rebecca finished the sentence for him.

“Your employment has been terminated.”

Nobody moved.

She continued in the same calm tone.

“Your company access, financial authority, and building credentials were disabled thirty-two minutes ago.”

Diane grabbed the letter.

“You can’t do this.”

Rebecca looked at her politely.

“The board already did.”

No one applauded.

No one laughed.

The champagne tower still glittered beneath the lights, untouched.

The banner over the ballroom still read:

WELCOME BACK TO FREEDOM, ETHAN.

I looked at it one last time.

Then I closed my leather folder, picked it up, and walked past the banner without saying another word.
