Part 3 of 3

“Which is why it told me everything I needed to know.”

My Father Finally Asked About My Life

Dad followed us toward the doors.

“Evelyn, wait.”

I stopped.

His voice was softer now.

“We clearly have some things to talk about.”

Mom stood beside him.

“Honey, we didn’t know.”

I looked at her.

“Know what?”

She glanced at Ethan.

That was the answer.

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“You can’t blame us for being surprised. You’ve told us nothing about your life.”

“That’s true.”

“Why would you hide something like this?”

“Because I wanted one part of my life that wasn’t graded.”

He frowned.

“Graded?”

“Successful enough. Social enough. Married soon enough. Impressive enough.”

Mom reached toward me.

I stepped back before she touched my arm.

Chloe came closer.

Her veil had been removed, but tiny white flowers were still pinned into her hair.

“So what happens to Preston’s family now?”

I stared at her.

That was her first question.

Not whether I was okay.

Not why I’d hidden a marriage for two years.

“I don’t know.”

She turned toward Ethan.

“You can’t seriously destroy their company because Dad spilled wine on her.”

Ethan didn’t respond.

I did.

“Their debt existed before Ethan entered this ballroom.”

“But he could help them.”

“He could.”

“And now he won’t because of you.”

“No, Chloe. He made a business decision.”

She folded her arms.

“That’s convenient.”

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Blackridge Capital.

“I need to take this.”

Dad looked irritated.

“Now?”

I answered anyway.

“Evelyn Carter.”

Our managing partner was calling about a deal we’d been working on for months.

The final numbers had cleared.

$320 million.

I stepped slightly away from my family.

“Yes.”

I listened.

“I’ve reviewed the revised terms.”

Another pause.

“Then you have my approval. Move forward.”

I ended the call.

Dad was staring at me.

So was Charles Whitmore.

He knew Blackridge.

Most people in his position did.

“You work for Blackridge Capital?” Charles asked.

“Yes.”

“In what capacity?”

I slipped my phone back into my purse.

“Chief Strategy Officer.”

Nobody spoke.

Chloe blinked.

“I thought you worked in consulting.”

“No.”

Dad’s face had gone strangely blank.

“Three hundred and twenty million?”

I didn’t answer.

He stepped closer.

“Evelyn, how much money do you make?”

There it was.

Not Why didn’t you tell us?

Not What did we do that made you keep your wedding secret?

Not even Are you happy?

“That’s what you want to ask me?”

Dad looked confused.

“I’m your father.”

“And that’s my salary.”

“I’m just trying to understand.”

“No. You’re trying to recalculate me.”

He opened his mouth.

I shook my head.

“Don’t.”

That was all.

One word.

For once, it was enough.

The Empty Glass

Ethan and I walked toward the ballroom doors.

Mom called my name.

I stopped once more.

Dad was standing beside the same table where he’d left his wine glass.

It was empty now.

The stem had a red fingerprint near the base.

“You’re going to regret walking away from your family like this,” he said.

I looked at him.

Then at the glass.

For most of my life, I’d measured good news by how Dad might respond to it.

A promotion.

An apartment.

A relationship.

Even my wedding.

I’d always imagined there would eventually be some achievement large enough to make him look at me the way he looked at Chloe.

There wasn’t.

Because the problem had never been the size of the achievement.

“I already have one regret.”

Dad waited.

“It took me thirty-two years to stop needing your permission to be proud of myself.”

I turned around.

Ethan opened the ballroom door for me.

We left.

The Brooks Technologies investment in Whitmore Industrial never happened.

I didn’t ask Ethan to change his decision, and he never asked me to defend it.

The Whitmores eventually restructured their debt and sold several assets.

What happened between Chloe and Preston afterward belonged to them.

I stopped keeping track.

My parents tried several times to repair things.

I didn’t cut them out completely.

I simply stopped accepting relationships that required me to become smaller so everyone else could remain comfortable.

A few weeks after the wedding, I picked up my ivory dress from the dry cleaner.

The stain hadn’t disappeared completely.

There was still a faint shadow near the neckline.

I considered having the dress altered to hide it.

Instead, I hung it in the back of my closet exactly as it was.

Sometimes a stain isn’t the part of something you need to erase.
