Part 2 of 3

Elise felt the familiar pressure return to her chest.

Graham noticed.

“Your husband?”

“Ex-husband. Technically, we’re still finalizing everything.”

“June’s father?”

She nodded.

When the cabin door opened, Graham did not rush her.

He waited while Elise gathered June’s things, then walked beside her into the terminal.

Three people were waiting near the gate.

Two men and one woman.

They wore ordinary business clothes, but Elise immediately understood that they were Graham’s security team.

The woman approached him.

“Mr. Weller, we have a situation.”

She turned her phone around.

A photograph showed Elise asleep against Graham’s shoulder with June nestled between them.

Someone had posted it before the plane even landed.

The caption described Graham traveling with an “unknown woman and child.”

That was embarrassing enough.

But underneath it, someone had posted Elise’s full legal name.

Elise Whitaker Halston.

Another comment claimed she had taken her daughter away from Derek without permission.

Elise went cold.

“How could anyone know that?”

Graham looked at the security specialist.

“Find out.”

Then he turned to Elise.

“Do you have somewhere safe to go?”

“My friend is expecting me.”

“Does Derek know her address?”

Elise stopped walking.

She had never considered that question.

Derek had met her friend twice.

He probably did know.

Her phone vibrated again.

Come outside. We need to discuss this now.

Elise looked toward the terminal windows.

“He’s here.”

The Papers She Never Really Read

Graham’s team moved Elise and June into a private airport lounge while they determined what was happening.

Elise hated accepting the help.

But June needed a bottle, her hands were shaking, and she could no longer pretend the situation was ordinary.

Graham remained several feet away.

“I’m not asking you to trust me,” he said. “I’m asking you not to walk into something you don’t understand yet.”

Her phone buzzed again.

Derek had sent another message.

Remember the papers you signed after June was born.

Elise stared at the screen.

“What papers?” Graham asked.

She hesitated.

“A few weeks after June was born, Derek brought me documents. He said they were connected to insurance, childcare, and our family accounts.”

“Did you read them?”

Elise felt embarrassed.

“Not carefully. I was exhausted. June barely slept, and I was recovering from delivery. Derek kept saying everything was routine.”

Graham did not criticize her.

Instead, he contacted an attorney from his company’s legal network.

Less than an hour later, attorney Caroline Hayes joined them by secure video call and began reviewing the information Elise could access.

What she found changed everything.

Several documents appeared to have been used far beyond what Elise remembered authorizing.

One had been connected to a request concerning June’s interstate travel.

Another was tied to a $52,000 personal credit account opened under Elise’s name.

Elise had never applied for it.

The mailing address belonged to Derek’s consulting office.

“That account isn’t mine,” Elise whispered.

Caroline’s expression remained professional.

“Your name is attached to it, but that does not mean you knowingly authorized it. We need the original records.”

Then Graham’s security team found something else.

The person who had first posted Elise’s identity online was connected to Derek’s older sister, Vanessa, who worked for a regional travel-services company.

That connection explained far too much.

Derek had known Elise’s flight.

He knew her destination.

He knew she had June.

And once the photograph with Graham appeared online, Derek had suddenly gained the perfect story to use against her.

Elise was no longer simply the woman leaving him.

He could portray her as someone who had disappeared with their child and immediately attached herself to a wealthy stranger.

Her phone vibrated again.

You have fifteen minutes to come outside before I handle this differently.

Elise stared at the message.

For years, those words would have worked.

Not because Derek shouted.

Because Elise had learned to prevent conflict by giving him whatever he wanted.

This time she put the phone on the table.

“I’m not going.”

The Messages He Should Never Have Sent

Caroline instructed Elise not to argue with Derek.

Instead, she asked Elise to preserve everything he sent.

Derek continued.

Messages became longer.

Then came voice recordings.

His polished public personality slowly disappeared.

“Elise, stop making this complicated. You signed what I gave you. If you didn’t read it, that’s your responsibility.”

Another recording followed.

“June comes back with me when I say she comes back. Don’t turn this into something bigger than it needs to be.”

Then:

“And tell Weller to stay out of our business. You have no idea what I can make this look like.”

Graham’s expression hardened, but he remained silent.

The most surprising discovery came an hour later.

Derek had apparently contacted an entertainment website shortly after the airplane photograph appeared.

He offered them a story suggesting Graham had deliberately arranged publicity with a struggling young mother to improve his image after recent criticism of his company.

The story was false.

But Derek did not need it to be true.

He only needed enough people to repeat it.

Elise finally understood.

Derek had not rushed to the airport because he missed June.

He was terrified of losing control of the story.

Caroline began preparing emergency legal filings while another attorney helped Elise report the questionable financial account and document use through the appropriate channels.

Graham offered to cover the expenses.

Elise immediately shook her head.

“I appreciate what you’re doing, but I don’t want another man controlling my life because I owe him something.”

Graham did not look offended.

“Then don’t owe me anything.”

She looked at him.

He continued quietly.

“Accepting help doesn’t mean giving someone ownership of your future.”

Elise looked away before he could see her eyes filling.

The Conversation Derek Thought He Could Control

Derek arrived at the airport later that afternoon with his mother, Judith.

Judith entered the private meeting area first.

Perfect hair. Pearl earrings. Cream-colored jacket.

She looked more offended than concerned.

“Elise, this has gone far enough. Bring June and come with us.”

Elise remained seated.

“No.”

Judith seemed genuinely surprised.

Then Derek entered.

He looked exactly as Elise remembered him whenever other people were watching.
