Part 2 of 3

The boy had his dark eyes.

One girl had the same dimple in her cheek.

And the other carried an expression that reminded him unmistakably of his own mother.

Sloane leaned closer.

“Grant, who are those children?”

He couldn’t answer.

Caroline approached them calmly.

“Hello, Grant. Thank you for inviting us.”

For the first time that morning, his confident smile disappeared.

Three Children and One Question He Could Barely Ask

Grant looked from Caroline to the children.

“I didn’t know you had a family,” he finally said.

Caroline rested a gentle hand on Ellis’s shoulder.

“There are many things you never asked about.”

The boy looked up at her.

“Mom, is this the man you told us about?”

Caroline nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart. This is Grant.”

Ellis extended his hand politely.

“Hello, sir. I’m Ellis.”

Grant shook it almost automatically.

Rowan introduced herself next, followed by June.

The resemblance was becoming impossible to ignore.

“How old are they?” Grant asked.

“Ten,” Caroline replied.

He swallowed.

“All three?”

June smiled.

“We’re triplets. People ask us that all the time.”

Sloane looked sharply at Grant.

“You told me you didn’t have children.”

“I didn’t know,” he whispered.

Caroline’s expression remained composed.

“You didn’t give yourself much opportunity to find out.”

A wedding coordinator approached, reminding Sloane that the ceremony would begin soon.

But Sloane barely heard her.

She looked at Caroline, then at the three children.

“Are you saying Grant is their father?”

Caroline paused.

She didn’t want the children to feel like the center of an argument, especially in front of strangers.

“I think this conversation deserves somewhere private,” she said gently.

Sloane agreed immediately.

Grant followed them into a quiet sitting room beside the hotel lobby.

The celebration continued outside, but for him, everything had changed.

The Letter He Claimed He Never Received

Inside the sitting room, Caroline asked the children to wait with Paige, who had accompanied them.

Once the door closed, Grant turned toward her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Caroline looked at him with genuine surprise.

“I did tell you, Grant.”

“No, you didn’t. I would have remembered something like that.”

She opened her handbag and removed a carefully folded envelope.

Inside were copies of the letter she had mailed years earlier, along with the delivery record.

Grant recognized the address.

It belonged to his former business office.

Caroline pointed to the date.

“I sent this shortly after our divorce. I called before that, and I tried again afterward.”

Grant read the letter slowly.

It explained her pregnancy, the doctor’s confirmation of three babies, and her hope that he would be willing to discuss their future.

His hands became unsteady.

“I never saw this,” he said.

“Perhaps you didn’t. But your office confirmed delivery, and every attempt I made to reach you ended in silence.”

Grant lowered himself into a chair.

He remembered instructing his assistant to screen personal messages after the divorce.

At the time, he had wanted a clean beginning.

He had never considered what he might be refusing to hear.

“I thought you were asking for money,” he admitted.

Caroline’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I was asking you to be part of their lives.”

Sloane stood near the window, listening.

She had heard Grant describe Caroline as someone who depended on him and couldn’t accept that their marriage had ended.

Now she was seeing an entirely different story.

“Why did you invite her today?” Sloane asked quietly.

Grant said nothing.

“Please tell me the truth.”

He stared at the carpet.

“I thought she’d see how successful I’d become.”

Sloane’s expression changed.

“You invited her here to make her feel small?”

His silence answered her question.

The Success He Never Expected Her to Achieve

Sloane turned toward Caroline.

“I’m sorry. You shouldn’t have been treated this way.”

Caroline shook her head gently.

“You didn’t know. I didn’t come here to embarrass anyone.”

Grant looked at her beautiful clothes and remembered the limousine outside.

“How did you manage all this?”

“I worked, Grant. I kept designing, and eventually people started believing in my work.”

“What kind of business do you have?”

“Seabrook Living.”

Grant looked up immediately.

He knew that name.

His company had recently considered hiring the studio to design several luxury properties.

“You own Seabrook Living?”

“I founded it eight years ago.”

He stared at her.

“That’s one of the most respected design firms in the area.”

Caroline smiled faintly.

“We’ve been fortunate to work with some wonderful people.”

Grant remembered the drawings he had dismissed during their marriage.

He remembered telling her that she was wasting her time.

And now the woman he had considered an obstacle had created something remarkable without him.

“You really built all of that yourself?”

“I had help from good people. But yes, I built my business while raising our children.”

She didn’t say it to hurt him.

She was simply telling him the truth.

And that made it harder for Grant to find anything to say.

The Wedding That Suddenly Meant Something Different

A soft knock came at the door.

The wedding coordinator reminded Sloane that their guests were waiting.

Sloane looked at Grant.

“I need a few minutes to think.”

He stood.

“Sloane, please. We can talk about this afterward.”

She shook her head.

“You spent years telling me that your first marriage failed because Caroline couldn’t keep up with you. Now I discover she supported you when you had nothing, and you invited her here hoping to humiliate her.”

Grant reached for her hand, but she gently moved away.

“I don’t know what to believe right now.”

Caroline quietly stepped toward the door.

“I never intended to interfere with your wedding. I only wanted to give Grant an opportunity to meet the children, if he was willing.”

Sloane turned to her.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Outside, the music had stopped.

Guests were beginning to wonder why the ceremony hadn’t started.

Grant followed Caroline into the hallway.

“Can I see them again?” he asked.

She studied his face.

“You can speak with them for a few minutes, but I need you to understand something.”

“Anything.”
