Part 2 of 3

Then Nate asked one question.

“When?”

Another silence.

A few minutes later—

“Answer me.”

His voice never rose.

That somehow sounded even worse.

Nearly forty minutes passed before they finally came downstairs.

Emily looked exhausted.

Her mascara had streaked down both cheeks.

Nate looked as though he’d aged ten years in less than an hour.

Neither of them noticed Luke waddling toward them with a stuffed elephant clutched in one hand.

Nate automatically picked him up.

Luke wrapped both arms around his neck.

Nate closed his eyes.

Only then did he speak.

“Mom…”

He struggled to finish the sentence.

“Luke is Adrian’s biological son.”

I slowly lowered myself into a chair.

Even though I’d already suspected the truth, hearing my own son say it out loud felt unreal.

Emily wiped her face.

“I’m sorry.”

No one answered.

Finally Nate pulled out a dining chair.

He sat down with Luke still in his lap.

“Start from the beginning.”

Emily nodded.

She took several shaky breaths before speaking.

Almost a year earlier, Nate had been sent to Seattle for six weeks to help launch a new engineering office.

Emily stayed home.

Because Adrian lived only fifteen minutes away, he checked on her every few days.

He brought groceries.

Fixed a leaking faucet.

Mowed the lawn when the grass became too long.

Dropped off dinner after Emily worked double shifts at the hospital.

At first, it was nothing more than family helping family.

Emily admitted she had been lonely.

She and Nate had argued before he left because his work trips had become more frequent.

She never blamed Nate.

She never claimed the affair was his fault.

She looked directly at him.

“What I did was my decision.”

“No one else’s.”

One Friday evening Adrian stopped by with takeout from their favorite barbecue place.

Emily had opened a bottle of wine.

They talked for hours.

Mostly about Nate.

About work.

About how much everyone missed Dad after he’d passed away years earlier.

About how strange it felt that the brothers barely saw each other anymore because of work.

Emily stopped speaking.

She pressed both hands against her forehead.

“It happened once.”

She swallowed hard.

“One night.”

“One terrible mistake.”

Nate didn’t interrupt.

He simply stared at the kitchen table.

Emily continued.

The next morning both of them agreed it never should have happened.

Adrian apologized before he even left the driveway.

They promised each other it would never happen again.

Several weeks later Nate returned home.

Life slowly settled back into its normal routine.

Then Emily discovered she was pregnant.

Because of the timing, she convinced herself the baby almost certainly belonged to Nate.

She buried the guilt.

She tried to forget that night had ever happened.

Luke’s birth changed everything.

Emily said Adrian visited the hospital two days after Luke was born.

Nate had stepped into the hallway to answer a work call while Adrian held the baby.

Luke stretched.

His hospital blanket slipped down.

For the first time Adrian saw the tiny crescent-shaped birthmark on the upper left side of Luke’s back.

Emily noticed him freeze.

He carefully turned the baby slightly.

Then he quietly pulled down the collar of his own T-shirt.

The same birthmark.

The same place.

Nearly the same shape.

Emily immediately shook her head.

“Birthmarks don’t prove anything.”

Adrian agreed.

But neither of them could ignore what they’d seen.

A week later Emily secretly ordered an at-home DNA kit.

She told Nate it was part of a keepsake project she wanted to make for Luke’s first birthday.

He never questioned it.

She mailed the samples herself.

Then she waited.

Every day she prayed the results would prove she had imagined everything.

Instead, they confirmed her worst fear.

Luke was Adrian’s son.

Emily called Adrian immediately.

He came over that evening.

They sat at the kitchen island staring at the report between them for nearly fifteen minutes.

Neither of them touched it.

Finally Adrian whispered,

“We have to tell Nate.”

Emily nodded.

She agreed.

They decided to tell him together after the weekend, when they would have enough time to answer every question honestly.

Emily looked down at the floor.

“We were two days too late.”

Adrian never made it home from work that Monday.

A drunk driver crossed the center line on Interstate 84.

He died before the ambulance reached the hospital.

Emily began crying again.

“After the funeral… I couldn’t do it.”

“Every day I told myself I’d tell Nate tomorrow.”

“Then tomorrow became next week.”

“Then next month.”

She looked toward the staircase.

“Then Luke started getting bigger.”

“The longer I waited… the harder it became.”

I suddenly remembered every excuse she’d ever made.

Every time I’d offered to bathe Luke.

Every time she’d smiled awkwardly and insisted she’d handle it herself.

Emily nodded slowly.

“I knew you’d recognize Adrian’s birthmark.”

“You saw it almost every day of his life.”

She admitted she’d begun covering Luke’s birthmark with flesh-colored waterproof dressings whenever anyone else might see his back.

If someone asked, she claimed Luke had sensitive skin.

Or eczema.

Or irritation from his car seat.

No one questioned her.

Especially not me.

I had trusted her completely.

Nate finally lifted his head.

His eyes were red, but his voice remained steady.

“Do you still have the DNA report?”

Emily nodded.

Without saying a word, she walked upstairs.

A minute later she returned carrying a sealed white envelope.

She placed it gently on the kitchen table.

Nate stared at it for several seconds.

Then he slid it toward himself.

He didn’t open it.

Instead, he looked at Emily one last time.

“Tomorrow morning we’re going to an accredited laboratory.”

“We’re doing another DNA test.”

Emily closed her eyes and nodded.

“I understand.”

“If the results match what’s in this envelope…”

Nate paused, looking down at Luke asleep in the highchair after wearing himself out crying earlier that evening.

When he finally spoke again, his voice was barely audible.

“Our marriage won’t survive it.”

The next morning, Nate called the laboratory as soon as it opened.

He didn’t ask Emily if she was ready.

He simply scheduled the appointment for that afternoon.

Emily agreed without hesitation.

She didn’t try to explain herself again.

She didn’t ask for another chance.

She just quietly packed Luke’s diaper bag while Nate dressed him for the drive.

Watching them move around the kitchen together felt surreal.

They still worked like parents who had spent months learning each other’s routines.

Emily knew exactly where Luke’s favorite pacifier was.

Nate knew which stuffed elephant kept him calm in the car.

Nothing about the way they cared for Luke had changed.

Only the silence between them had.

The laboratory was bright, quiet, and painfully ordinary.

A technician smiled warmly as she invited us into a small consultation room.

She had no idea our family had walked in carrying far more than paperwork.

Luke happily played with a wooden puzzle on the floor while the technician explained the procedure.

A cheek swab.

A few signatures.

A waiting period of approximately three weeks.

That was all.

Emily signed every consent form without reading twice.

Nate signed his beside hers.

Neither of them looked at the other.

When everything was finished, the technician handed Nate a receipt.
