When she had asked for another drink.
When she had stopped responding normally.
The medical staff reassured them that Maisie was stable and would remain under observation.
Audrey should have felt relief.
Instead, she kept replaying Bianca’s face in her mind.
That calm expression.
That glance toward the kitchen.
The way she had immediately tried to frame Audrey as dramatic.
At 9:24 that evening, Audrey’s phone rang.
Bianca.
Audrey answered.
“Hello?”
Bianca did not ask how Maisie was feeling.
Her first question was different.
“Everything is okay now, right?”
Audrey glanced toward Grant.
He was seated beside the window and immediately understood why the wording mattered.
“She’s stable.”
Bianca released a long breath.
“Good. Then hopefully tomorrow we can repair some of the embarrassment from today.”
Audrey frowned.
“Embarrassment?”
“Mom is upset. Everyone watched you turn a simple situation into a scene.”
Audrey stayed silent.
Bianca continued.
“People notice these things, Audrey. Especially when somebody is under pressure. Business partners notice. Family courts notice. Boards notice.”
Audrey’s entire body became still.
There it was.
This was no longer about the birthday party.
“You’re talking about the company.”
Bianca laughed.
“I’m talking about reality.”
“You still want my voting shares.”
Another pause.
Then Bianca’s voice hardened.
“Granddad should never have given you that authority.”
“He gave it to me after several accounts required investigation.”
“Careful.”
Audrey looked at Grant.
Then she said quietly,
“Maybe you should be careful.”
She ended the call.
The Camera Saw What Nobody Else Did
Early the next morning, Audrey’s attorney, Marissa Keene, arrived carrying two folders and a laptop.
A county investigator named Renee Callahan joined them shortly afterward.
Audrey’s security system automatically stored recordings remotely.
Nothing depended on a memory card inside the house.
Nothing could quietly disappear from the kitchen.
Audrey opened the footage from the afternoon of the birthday party.
They watched relatives moving through the kitchen.
Children appeared occasionally.
Grant walked past once carrying a tray.
Audrey entered twice.
Then Bianca appeared alone.
She looked toward the doorway.
Then toward the hall.
She opened her handbag.
Removed a small item.
Worked with it near the counter.
Then leaned over Maisie’s special birthday cup.
Nobody spoke.
Audrey felt as though all the air had been pulled from the room.
The video showed Bianca placing something into the drink and stirring it before returning the cup to its original position.
Renee watched the clip a second time.
Then a third.
Finally, she closed the laptop slightly.
“We’ll preserve this recording properly.”
Audrey stared at the screen.
Even after everything she had suspected about her sister over the years, she had never imagined Bianca would involve Maisie.
Not her daughter.
Not a seven-year-old child celebrating her birthday.
Grant reached for Audrey’s hand.
She squeezed his fingers tightly.
She did not cry.
Not yet.
She was too shocked.
Derek Made the Mistake That Ended Their Story
Later that morning, Bianca arrived at the hospital with Derek and Lorraine.
Bianca wore dark glasses and carried herself as though she were the person who had suffered most.
“I came to see my niece,” she announced.
Audrey remained near the door to Maisie’s room.
“You’re not going inside.”
Lorraine looked horrified.
“Audrey, she is your sister.”
“And Maisie is my daughter.”
Derek stepped toward Audrey after Lorraine moved away.
His voice was low.
“Whatever footage you think you have, get rid of it.”
Audrey stared at him.
He continued.
“Nobody needs this becoming bigger. People can always say Grant accidentally brought something home from work. He works around equipment and supplies all day. There are plenty of explanations.”
Derek did not realize Grant had just opened the hospital room door behind him.
He had heard almost everything.
Grant calmly raised his phone.
“Would you like to repeat that?”
Derek turned.
The confidence disappeared from his face.
Nobody needed to explain what the phone was doing.
It was recording.
The Meeting Where Every Lie Fell Apart
Bianca demanded a family meeting.
She insisted Audrey was trying to blame her because of their business disagreements.
Audrey agreed.
But the meeting happened in a private hospital conference room with Renee, Audrey’s attorney, Grant, Lorraine, Derek, and Bianca present.
Bianca spoke first.
Her voice shook beautifully.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I love Maisie. Audrey has resented me for years, and now she’s using something that happened at a birthday party to destroy my life.”
Audrey waited until Bianca finished.
Then she placed the laptop on the table.
“Watch.”
The recording began.
Bianca entered the kitchen onscreen.
She checked the doorway.
