Minutes Later, His Executives Were Panicking. But When I Finally Reached the Private Suite, I Discovered a Secret Even More Shocking Than Another Woman…

Part 2 of 3

Kendra lowered her eyes.

After a long silence, she admitted that Spencer frequently called her after business hours and complained about his marriage.

He had told her we were separated.

He had also suggested that Rebecca and Owen represented the family life he was trying to protect.

“I thought you already knew,” Kendra whispered.

“You thought I knew my husband was introducing another woman as his wife?”

She had no answer.

For the first time, I understood that Spencer had not merely hidden something from me.

He had created different versions of our marriage for different people.

My Daughter Asked the Question I Feared Most

Maisie climbed down from her chair and approached me.

Her little necklace was still resting beside her plate.

“Mommy, did Daddy forget we were coming?”

I pulled her onto my lap.

“Daddy didn’t know we were coming, sweetheart.”

She touched my cheek.

“Then why can’t we see him?”

I searched for an answer that wouldn’t make her feel unwanted.

“Because Mommy needs to understand something first.”

“Is Daddy mad at us?”

“No, honey. You haven’t done anything wrong.”

She rested her head against my shoulder.

“I just wanted to give him his present.”

Those words hurt more than anything Kendra had said.

Allison arranged for Maisie to spend a little time with her assistant and the assistant’s daughter in a supervised children’s lounge downstairs.

Before leaving, Maisie placed the necklace in my purse.

“Keep it safe until I see Daddy.”

I promised I would.

Then I stood and turned toward Allison.

“Take me upstairs.”

Behind the Presidential Suite Doors

The elevator opened onto a quiet private floor.

Allison used her executive key card to reach the reception area.

Kendra followed us.

As we approached the suite, I heard a woman’s voice.

“You promised she wouldn’t come tonight.”

Then Spencer answered.

“I took care of it. Laurel never attends these events.”

My heart sank.

I opened the door.

Spencer stood beside a large window overlooking Philadelphia.

A woman in a dark green evening dress was near the fireplace. Beside her stood a boy of approximately eight years old.

The boy had dark curls and an anxious expression.

Spencer turned toward me.

“Laurel? What are you doing here?”

Not a greeting.

Not an apology.

Just surprise that his carefully arranged evening had been interrupted.

“I came with Maisie.”

His expression changed immediately.

“She’s here?”

“Downstairs. She made you a present.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Spencer, you said Laurel knew everything.”

I looked at her.

“Apparently, neither of us knows very much.”

Spencer loosened his tie.

“Can we discuss this privately?”

“You made this public when you removed your wife from the guest list.”

Allison stepped forward and explained that the board had received concerns about the Harborstone payments.

Spencer’s face became pale.

“Who contacted the investors?”

“I called my brother,” I answered.

He looked at me in disbelief.

“You brought your family into this?”

“You brought strangers into our marriage and told them we were separated.”

He looked away.

The Boy Wasn’t Who Everyone Believed

I turned toward Rebecca.

“I need to ask you something, and I would appreciate an honest answer.”

She nodded nervously.

“Is Owen Spencer’s son?”

Spencer answered before she could.

“No.”

The room became silent.

I stared at him.

“Then whose child is he?”

Rebecca placed a protective hand on Owen’s shoulder.

“His father was Spencer’s younger brother, Travis.”

I struggled to understand.

Spencer had mentioned Travis only a few times during our marriage.

According to him, they had become estranged years earlier, and Travis had passed away following an accident overseas.

“Travis had a child?”

Rebecca nodded.

“I was expecting Owen when Travis disappeared. Spencer found us later and offered to help.”

I turned toward my husband.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Spencer looked exhausted.

“Because Travis had serious financial problems. He used false documents to obtain funding for a business that eventually collapsed.”

Allison listened carefully.

“Was that connected to Whitcomb Holdings?”

“Not directly. It happened before I founded this company.”

Spencer explained that he had found Travis months after he disappeared.

His brother had been unwell and, according to Spencer, had passed away before Owen was born.

Rebecca had been left raising the boy alone.

Spencer had decided to provide financial support.

At first, I felt a small measure of relief.

Owen wasn’t the child of a secret romantic relationship.

But that relief didn’t last.

The Secret Was Bigger Than Another Family

“Why use company money?” Allison asked.

Spencer rubbed his forehead.

“Rebecca helped us make some business introductions. I thought I could structure the payments through her consulting firm.”

“Did those services justify the invoices?”

He didn’t answer.

Rebecca looked at him.

“I told you we should keep everything separate from your business.”

I felt my frustration rising again.

“You could have helped your nephew openly. I would never have turned away a child who needed family.”

Spencer looked at me.

“I was afraid you’d ask questions about Travis.”

“Because you were ashamed of what happened?”

He nodded.

Then he admitted something even more painful.
