“Let’s Keep This Simple Today,” My Husband Said as He Walked Into Our Divorce Hearing With His Mistress on His Arm. I Was Eight Months Pregnant, and Our Six-Year-Old Daughter Was Waiting for Me at Home. He Was Certain I Would Sign His Settlement and Walk Away Quietly—Until My Attorney Placed a Thick Blue Folder Before the Judge. The Moment She Opened It, My Husband Stopped Smiling… Because I Had Found the One Thing He Never Thought I Would

Part 2 of 3

“Nobody told me. I heard you talking on your phone.”

The room went quiet.

Grant crouched beside her.

“This is grown-up stuff, okay?”

Wren’s eyes filled with confusion.

“But you’re still my dad, right?”

Grant hugged her.

“Always.”

I wanted to believe him.

I desperately wanted those words to be true for her.

Whatever had happened between Grant and me, Wren still loved her father.

That was why I never tried to make her choose sides.

I simply promised myself that whatever happened next, my daughters would grow up knowing that love should never require them to ignore the truth.

The Drive To Court

The morning of our final hearing arrived under a gray Ohio sky.

My mother stayed home with Wren because I did not want our six-year-old anywhere near the courthouse.

My older brother, Dean, drove me.

Rain moved gently across the windshield while I rested both hands over my stomach.

My unborn daughter shifted beneath my coat.

Dean glanced over.

“You okay?”

“I’m okay.”

He waited.

“That’s not what I asked.”

I smiled.

“I’m ready.”

When we reached the courthouse, Grant was already outside.

Paige stood beside him beneath a large umbrella.

She wore a cream coat and held his arm as though they were arriving at an event together rather than attending the final hearing of his marriage.

Grant looked at my stomach, then at my face.

“Let’s keep this simple today.”

I met his eyes.

“I would like that.”

Paige gave me a careful smile.

“I hope after today we can all move forward.”

There were a hundred things I could have said.

Instead, I answered quietly.

“So do I.”

The Blue Folder

Evelyn was waiting inside.

A thick blue folder sat on the table in front of her.

Grant noticed it.

I saw his eyes pause there for half a second.

Then he looked away.

His attorney began by describing Grant’s proposed settlement as reasonable.

Grant appeared relaxed.

He probably believed I would accept whatever ended the marriage fastest.

Then Evelyn stood.

“My client is prepared to move forward with the divorce, Your Honor, but there is a serious issue concerning the financial disclosures provided by Mr. Hollowell.”

Grant’s shoulders stiffened.

His attorney immediately responded.

Evelyn remained calm.

“We have documentation indicating assets and business interests that were not included in the original disclosure.”

The judge looked toward her.

“What kind of business interests?”

Evelyn opened the folder.

“Primarily an entity called Ridgeway Meridian Holdings.”

Grant stopped moving.

Paige turned toward him.

That tiny reaction told me everything.

He had believed the name would never be spoken in that courtroom.

The Company He Thought I Would Never Find

Evelyn began laying out the records.

There were property documents.

Account statements.

Transfers.

Corporate filings.

Emails.

The paperwork showed connections between Grant’s business activities and Ridgeway Meridian that required far more explanation than he had provided.

The judge studied the documents.

“Mr. Hollowell, what is your relationship with this company?”

Grant cleared his throat.

“I have interests in several investment entities.”

Evelyn looked toward him.

“Ridgeway Meridian specifically.”

Grant’s attorney started to object.

The judge raised a hand.

“I would like him to answer.”

Grant hesitated.

For years, hesitation had been mine.

I had hesitated to question him.

Hesitated to believe what I saw.

Hesitated because I was afraid of destroying our family.

Now Grant was the one searching for words.

“It’s a private investment structure.”

Evelyn nodded.

“One that received transfers during the months immediately preceding the divorce filing?”

Grant said nothing.

Paige slowly removed her hand from his arm.

The Email That Changed The Room

Then Evelyn displayed several emails that had been obtained and reviewed as part of the financial process.

One message was between Grant and Paige.

The words were simple.

Once Mallory signs, we can move everything where it belongs.

Paige stared at the screen.

Her expression changed.

“You said that account had nothing to do with the divorce.”

Grant whispered something to her.

She pulled away.

“Grant, you told me everything was already separated.”

He looked irritated.

“Not now, Paige.”

“Then when?”
