Happy Soul Moral Stories

“It’s Just a Fever. Stop Being So Dramatic,” My Husband Snapped as I Begged Him to Take Me to the ER. I’d Been Burning Up at 104°F for Seven Days, and He Kept Changing the Bandage on My Sw0llen Ankle, Refusing to Let Me See the Wound. That Night, I Secretly Removed the Gauze, Saw My Skin Turning Black, and Called a Taxi. At the Hospital, the Doctor Examined My Leg, Turned to the Nurse, and Said, “Call the Police. Now.” Then He Asked Me One Question About the Blue Bottle My Husband Had Been Hiding Under Our Sink…

Part 2 of 3

“Yes.”

A security officer appeared at the door before she could ask another question.

Lucas had arrived at the hospital.

He was downstairs demanding to see me.

According to the officer, he’d told the front desk that I was confused by my fever and needed to come home.

Detective Hall turned toward me.

“Do you want him here?”

I thought about the way he’d refused to look away from his computer while I begged for help.

“No.”

The officer nodded and left.

For the first time that night, I felt a small measure of control over what happened next.

The Sister He’d Been Lying To

I asked for my phone and called my younger sister, Megan.

She answered sounding half asleep.

“Jess? It’s after two. What’s wrong?”

“I’m in the hospital.”

There was a rustling sound.

“What? Why? Lucas told me yesterday you were feeling better.”

I closed my eyes.

“I’m not better. Megan, I need you to come.”

“I’m leaving now. Which hospital?”

When she arrived forty minutes later, she was wearing jeans, slippers, and a winter coat over her pajamas.

She stopped at the doorway when she saw the monitors and IV tubing.

“Oh, Jess.”

She hugged me gently.

“Why didn’t you tell me it was this bad?”

“I thought you were busy. Lucas said you couldn’t come over.”

Megan pulled back.

“What are you talking about? I offered to take you to urgent care on Thursday. He told me you had a stomach bug and didn’t want visitors.”

I stared at her.

“He said you were working overtime.”

“I wasn’t. I called him twice because you weren’t answering.”

The room went quiet.

Lucas hadn’t simply dismissed my symptoms. He’d prevented someone else from helping me.

Megan sat beside the bed and held my hand.

“You’re not going back there tonight. Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out.”

Before I could answer, Dr. Bennett returned with preliminary information.

He explained that the injury appeared consistent with exposure to a highly alkaline substance. Testing of residue from the dressing suggested something far more caustic than an ordinary wound antiseptic.

“We haven’t identified the exact product yet,” he said. “But the damage is serious, and we’re concerned about the infection spreading. The surgeons recommend removing the damaged tissue as soon as possible.”

My mouth went dry.

“Am I going to lose my foot?”

“We’re doing everything we can to prevent that. I can’t promise how much treatment you’ll need, but getting here tonight was important.”

Megan squeezed my hand.

I looked at the phone resting on the blanket.

Another message from Lucas had appeared.

“Jessica, you’re going to ruin my life over an honest mistake. Just tell them I was trying to help.”

I read it aloud.

Megan’s face hardened.

“He’s worried about his life?”

She looked at my swollen leg.

“What about yours?”

PART TWO — WHAT WAS REALLY IN THE BLUE BOTTLE

The Warning My Husband Ignored

The surgery lasted several hours.

When I woke, my ankle was heavily bandaged, and my throat felt dry. Megan was sitting beside the window with a paper cup of coffee.

I tried to move my foot.

“Megan?”

She stood immediately.

“I’m here.”

“Do I still have it?”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes, Jess. You still have your foot.”

I started crying before she finished speaking.

The surgeon later explained that he’d removed badly damaged tissue and that I would need close monitoring, additional wound care, and possibly another procedure.

My fever began improving with treatment, but I remained in the hospital.

Detective Hall returned two days later.

She asked whether I felt well enough to discuss new information.

I agreed.

Investigators had identified a commercial alkaline degreaser associated with Lucas’s workplace. Laboratory testing found components consistent with residue recovered from my dressing.

The product was intended for industrial cleaning, not medical use.

“Did Lucas admit using it?” I asked.

“He’s acknowledged applying a cleaning solution. We’re still establishing exactly what he knew and when.”

She opened a folder.

“There’s something else. One of his coworkers provided messages that may help explain why he didn’t take you to the hospital.”

The coworker’s name was Daniel Price.

I knew Daniel. He’d visited our apartment several times and had always seemed friendly.

Detective Hall explained that Lucas had contacted Daniel during the week I was sick.

In one message, Lucas mentioned using concentrated cleaner on a scrape near my heel.

Daniel immediately warned him that the product could cause chemical burns.

“That’s industrial degreaser, Luke. You can’t put that on somebody’s skin. Wash it off and get her checked out.”

Lucas replied that the wound already looked bad.

Daniel told him to take me to the emergency room.

Lucas’s response made my stomach turn.

“If I take her in, they’ll ask what I used. I can’t afford that kind of trouble. Maybe it’ll settle down.”

I asked Detective Hall to read it again.

She did.

For several moments, I couldn’t speak.

I’d spent seven days wondering whether Lucas genuinely believed his treatment was helping.

Now I knew he’d been warned.

“When was that message sent?” I asked.

“Thursday afternoon.”

Thursday.

That was the day I’d cried while he changed the bandage because the burning was unbearable.

It was also the day Megan had offered to take me to urgent care.

Lucas had told her I was improving.

“He knew,” I whispered.

Detective Hall didn’t rush to answer.

“The messages indicate he was warned about the danger. The investigation will examine what happened after that.”

I looked down at my bandaged leg.

“He kept telling me to wait.”

Megan moved her chair closer.

“Jess, you don’t have to go through the rest of this alone.”

I nodded, although I was still trying to reconcile the messages with the man I’d married.

The Story He Told Everyone Else

During the following week, Lucas began contacting relatives.

His version was simple: he’d tried a home remedy, made an unfortunate mistake, and was now being treated like a criminal because the hospital had misunderstood his intentions.

His aunt called Megan.

“Lucas would never deliberately hurt Jessica. They’ve been married eleven years. Surely they can work this out privately.”

Megan answered firmly.

“Jessica’s still in the hospital. She needed surgery. Whatever Lucas intended, he refused to get her help after someone warned him the product was dangerous.”

“Well, he’s frightened too.”

“Then he can speak with his attorney. My sister needs to recover.”

When Megan told me about the conversation, I felt a strange sadness.

Lucas had always been good at making people see things from his perspective. He could turn a missed appointment into someone else’s scheduling mistake or explain away a careless purchase as something we both needed.

I’d accepted those explanations for years because arguing seemed exhausting.
