Moral Stories Behind Closed Doors

I Never Told My Son-in-Law Who I Used to Be. At 5:00 A.M. on Thanksgiving Morning, He Called and Told Me to Pick Up My Daughter at the Bus Station. Forty Minutes Later, I Found Her Sitting Alone in the Freezing Cold, Barely Able to Speak. Then She Looked Up at Me and Whispered, “They Forced Me Out So His Mistress Could Take My Place at the Table.” While They Gathered Around the Thanksgiving Dinner Table Inside Their Warm Home, They Had No Idea That the Woman Driving the Old Blue SUV Was About to Change Their Lives Forever

Part 2 of 3

Her breathing grew uneven.

“Grant and Vivian.”

I felt the world around me grow perfectly still.

“Tell me what happened.”

She swallowed.

“Grant has another woman. Vivian wanted her at Thanksgiving dinner. They said I embarrassed the family.”

She began to tremble.

“They forced me out of the house.”

Snowflakes drifted silently around us.

“They brought you here?”

She nodded weakly.

“They said I should disappear quietly.”

Then she lost consciousness.

The Ambulance Ride

The ambulance arrived minutes later.

Inside, the vehicle smelled of disinfectant, plastic tubing, and overheated machinery. A paramedic adjusted Natalie’s blanket while another checked her vital signs.

At the hospital, a deputy sheriff approached me.

He seemed polite enough, but his expression carried the familiar look of a man who had already decided how much effort he intended to spend.

“Mrs. Mercer, we’re still gathering information.”

“My daughter needs protection,” I replied.

He nodded slowly.

“Grant Whitmore contacted the station earlier. According to him, there was an unfortunate accident at home.”

“An accident?”

“That’s what he reported.”

I folded my hands together.

“My daughter didn’t arrive at the bus station without a coat, in freezing temperatures, because of an accident.”

He shifted uncomfortably.

“Grant’s family is influential around here.”

“The law doesn’t change according to someone’s influence.”

He lowered his voice.

“Perhaps it would be best to wait until after the holiday.”

I stared directly into his eyes.

“No.”

An Old Friend Answers the Phone

There was a payphone near the emergency entrance.

I dropped a coin into the slot and dialed a number I hadn’t called in years.

The line rang twice.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“This is Douglas Reed.”

“Doug, it’s Evelyn.”

There was a brief silence.

“How bad is it?” he asked.

“Bad enough that I need another set of eyes.”

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

Douglas Reed had spent twenty-five years working in federal investigations. We had built dozens of cases together.

He trusted facts.

I trusted instincts.

Together, we had rarely been wrong.

Thanksgiving Dinner

By early afternoon, Douglas and I had assembled enough information to understand what had happened.

Grant and Vivian were hosting an elaborate Thanksgiving celebration.

Neighbors, investors, business associates, and family friends had gathered around the enormous dining table inside the Whitmore residence.

Candles glowed.

Music played softly through hidden speakers.

Laughter filled the room.

Meanwhile, Natalie remained in a hospital bed.

Douglas glanced at me.

“What do you want to do?”

I looked down at the old identification badge I had carried for so many years.
