Months earlier, he had synchronized his business tablet with our family cloud account so Ben could use it during a vacation.

He never disconnected it.

The backup history was still updating automatically.

I wasn’t searching for Ashley.

I was searching for the purchase.

It took less than fifteen minutes.

The receipt appeared inside a synchronized folder.

Corporate expense card.

Forty-two thousand, three hundred dollars.

Description:

Client appreciation event.

I stared at the screen.

A diamond necklace was apparently now considered a client meeting.

I downloaded the receipt.

Then another document caught my attention.

A wire transfer.

Then another.

Different companies.

Nearly identical amounts.

Always approved by Jake.

Always marked as equipment expenses.

I opened a spreadsheet.

Old instincts returned faster than I expected.

One Phone Call

The next morning I called Susan Brown.

She had been my attorney since we updated our wills after Ben was born.

She answered on the second ring.

“Emily?”

“I think my husband is stealing from our company.”

Silence.

“What do you have?”

“Not enough yet.”

“Then don’t confront him.”

I looked toward the kitchen.

Jake was laughing with Ben over pancakes.

If I hadn’t seen the jewelry store yesterday, I would have believed nothing was wrong.

“Can you meet this afternoon?” I asked.

“Bring everything.”

Susan spread the printed receipts across her conference table.

She read each page twice.

Finally she leaned back.

“These aren’t random.”

My stomach tightened.

“How bad?”

She tapped three invoices.

“The vendors share the same mailing address.”

She opened her laptop.

Five minutes later she turned the screen toward me.

A small office building.

Three different companies.

One mailbox.

“Someone created shell vendors.”

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew whose signature appeared on every approval.

Jake’s.

Susan folded her hands.

“Emily, don’t tell him you’ve found this.”

“Why?”

“Because if he’s moving money, he’ll destroy whatever’s left.”

When I returned home, Jake was grilling steaks in the backyard.

He waved like nothing had happened.

“Perfect timing.”

I forced a smile.

“Smells good.”

He kissed my cheek.

The same lips that had promised another woman she would receive a diamond necklace that night.

Ben ran outside carrying a baseball glove.

“Mom! Dad said we’ll go camping next month!”

I looked at Jake.

He smiled confidently.

“Family trip.”

For one strange second I wondered whether he actually believed he could keep every version of his life separated forever.

The First Real Proof

Two nights later Jake fell asleep on the couch while watching television.

His business tablet rested beside him.

Normally it required facial recognition.

That night it was already unlocked.

I carried it into my home office before the screen timed out.

There were hundreds of files.

Most meant nothing.

Then I found a folder simply labeled:

Projects.

Inside were photographs of signed invoices.

Payment schedules.

Bank confirmations.

Several emails with Ashley Davis.

One message made me stop scrolling.

Move Mike onto the approvals if anyone starts asking questions.

Mike Johnson.

Our senior accountant.

A man who had worked for us for nearly fifteen years.

Another email arrived minutes later.

If everything goes wrong, accounting signed the reports first.

My hands froze above the keyboard.

Jake wasn’t just stealing.

He was already preparing someone else to take the blame.

I copied every file onto an encrypted drive.

Then I logged out exactly as I had found it.

When I returned the tablet to the coffee table, Jake never opened his eyes.

The next morning he kissed Ben goodbye, grabbed the same tablet, and left for work.

He had no idea that the evidence he planned to hide was already sitting inside a small yellow folder in my attorney’s office.

For the first time since I saw the velvet jewelry box, I wasn’t wondering whether Jake was lying anymore.

I was deciding how to make sure he couldn’t lie his way out of it.
