Part 2 of 3

“You need to stop acting like I’ve committed some unforgivable offense,” he said.

“I asked you one question, Derek. Was Kelsey the only passenger you were involved with?”

He rolled his eyes.

“There were a few women over the years. They were adults. Nobody was making promises.”

I stared at him.

“Passengers?”

“Yes, passengers. They had money, they enjoyed my company, and I enjoyed theirs. It happens.”

“Your company allows that?”

Derek laughed.

“Of course not. Their employee handbook has strict rules about personal relationships with guests. But rules only matter when somebody complains.”

Then he stepped closer.

“And before you get any ideas, remember that my salary pays for this house. If I lose my job, you and the girls lose your security too.”

I said nothing.

What Derek didn’t realize was that our front-door security camera had recorded the entire conversation, including the audio.

That evening, I downloaded the footage and saved copies in a private folder.

For the first time in months, I felt that I had something more useful than promises.

I had the truth in his own words.

The Quiet Plan Behind My Smile

My closest friend, Sabrina Ellis, arrived the next morning with coffee and breakfast sandwiches.

She had known me since college and immediately noticed something was wrong.

I told her everything.

When I finished, she reached across the kitchen table and held my hand.

“Natalie, you and those girls can stay with me for as long as you need.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t want to run away without a plan.”

Sabrina nodded.

“Then we’ll make one.”

Over the next two days, I contacted a family-law attorney in Pierce County, reviewed our financial documents, and asked about temporary parenting arrangements.

I learned that Washington courts generally focused on children’s welfare and each parent’s caregiving history rather than treating infidelity as an automatic reason to award custody.

That mattered to me.

I didn’t want revenge to determine my daughters’ future.

I wanted stability.

I also contacted the boutique where I had worked before maternity leave. My former manager offered me a part-time position, with the possibility of returning full-time.

It wasn’t glamorous, but it was a beginning.

By Saturday afternoon, I had packed the girls’ essentials, arranged a safe place for us to stay, and spoken with my attorney about the next steps.

Sabrina came to collect the babies before dinner.

As she secured their car seats, she looked at me anxiously.

“Are you sure you want to go through with tonight?”

I glanced toward the house.

“Derek thinks I’m going to smile through dinner because I’m afraid of losing his income. I need him to understand that I’m not going to protect his lies anymore.”

I kissed both girls goodbye.

Then I walked back inside and began setting the table.

The Dinner That Was Supposed to Secure His Future

At seven o’clock, Franklin Prescott arrived.

He was a polished man in his late fifties, with silver hair and the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to making difficult decisions.

Derek greeted him enthusiastically.

“Franklin, welcome! We’re so glad you could join us.”

Walter stood near the fireplace, wearing his best navy blazer.

He shook Franklin’s hand.

“I’ve known this industry for forty years. I can tell you my son has always understood responsibility.”

Franklin smiled politely.

“That’s certainly important in our business.”

Dinner began pleasantly.

Derek told entertaining stories about difficult voyages, demanding guests, and the challenges of managing hundreds of crew members.

He described himself as a dedicated husband who had spent months dreaming of returning home to his newborn daughters.

“Everything I’ve done has been for Natalie and the girls,” he said warmly.

Walter lifted his glass.

“That’s what family is about. Commitment.”

I looked down at my plate.

For months, I had believed those same words.

Franklin turned toward me.

“Natalie, you must be relieved to have Derek home. Raising twins while your husband is overseas can’t be easy.”

“It hasn’t been,” I replied.

Derek reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

“But that’s why this position means so much. Tell him, sweetheart.”

I gently withdrew my hand.

“Actually, Mr. Prescott, there’s something I’d like to ask about the company’s employee conduct policy.”

Derek stopped smiling.

“Natalie, this isn’t the time.”

Franklin placed his fork down.

“What would you like to know?”

“Does the company have rules about senior crew members pursuing personal relationships with passengers?”

The room became silent.

Derek gave a nervous laugh.

“She’s been reading too many stories online.”

I continued looking at Franklin.

“I’m asking because Derek told me those relationships were prohibited, but that nobody cared unless someone complained.”

Walter shifted in his chair.

“Natalie, that’s enough.”

I turned toward him.

“You asked me to handle this privately at the harbor, Walter. I’ve spent three days being told to stay quiet. I think I’ve been quiet long enough.”

Franklin’s expression hardened.

“Derek, is there something I should know?”

Derek opened his mouth.

No words came out.

The Recording Nobody Expected

I placed my phone on the table.

“This was recorded by our front-door security camera on Thursday afternoon. I was part of the conversation, and I’ve kept the original file.”

Derek immediately leaned forward.

“Natalie, don’t.”

Franklin looked between us.

“I would like to hear what this concerns.”

I pressed play.

Derek’s voice filled the dining room.

“There were a few women over the years. They were adults. Nobody was making promises.”

Then my recorded voice:

“Passengers?”

And his reply:

“Yes, passengers. They had money, they enjoyed my company, and I enjoyed theirs.”

The recording continued.

“Their employee handbook has strict rules about personal relationships with guests. But rules only matter when somebody complains.”

Finally came the words that had stayed with me since Thursday.

“If I lose my job, you and the girls lose your security too.”
