The evening suddenly felt colder.

“He made me promise something.”

My chest tightened.

“What kind of promise?”

Daniel stared toward the fields instead of at me.

“He said I couldn’t tell you.”

The words landed harder than I expected.

“For two years.”

I blinked.

“Two years?”

He nodded.

“Exactly two years.”

I searched his face.

There was guilt there.

Relief.

Sadness.

All tangled together.

“You knew about this all along?”

“Yes.”

“And every time I cried… every birthday… every Christmas…”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“You still said nothing?”

His voice almost disappeared.

“I gave Dad my word.”

I wanted to be angry.

Instead I kept staring at the box.

Richard had never asked people to keep secrets.

Not from me.

Never.

Daniel slowly lifted the box onto his lap.

“He told me if anything happened to him…”

He paused.

“…I had to wait exactly two years before giving this to you.”

“Why?”

He shook his head.

“He never explained.”

The brass latch clicked open.

Inside rested several carefully arranged bundles tied with faded blue ribbon.

Old photographs.

A leather-bound notebook.

A thick envelope addressed in Richard’s unmistakable handwriting.

And beneath everything…

A stack of official-looking documents sealed inside a weatherproof folder.

My name was written across the envelope.

Not “Brittney.”

Not “Mrs. Collins.”

Just one word.

“My Love.”

My fingers trembled as I picked it up.

The paper felt older than it should have.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“He said you could read the letter first.”

“Everything else… only if you wanted.”

I carefully unfolded the pages.

Richard’s handwriting immediately pulled me back decades.

Steady.

Patient.

Exactly the way he built fences.

Exactly the way he planted trees.

The first line made my breath catch.

I looked up.

“Daniel…”

He nodded slowly.

“Keep reading.”

My heartbeat quickened.

I looked down at Richard’s letter again.

The words blurred for a moment before I forced myself to keep reading.

My hands tightened around the paper.

Two peaceful years?

I looked at Daniel.

“What does he mean?”

He slowly shook his head.

“Mom… I only know what’s inside the box. Dad never explained any of it to me.”

I took a slow breath and continued.

Everything you knew about our marriage was real. Every laugh. Every fight. Every harvest. Every Christmas. None of that was a lie.

My throat tightened.

But before I became your husband, I lived another life.

I reached for the weatherproof folder beneath the letter.

Inside were government documents.

Some carried faded stamps.

Others had entire paragraphs blacked out.

Several pages bore an eagle seal I had never seen before.

Tucked between them were photographs.

One showed a much younger Richard.

Except he barely looked like my Richard.

His hair was shorter.

His expression was colder.

He wore a dark coat in front of snow-covered apartment buildings somewhere in Europe.

Another photograph showed him shaking hands with two men whose faces had been crossed out with thick black ink.

There was no explanation.

Only dates.

I unfolded another sheet.

My heart skipped.

Central Intelligence Agency.

I read the words twice.

Then a third time.

“Daniel…”

He leaned forward.

“I know.”

“This can’t be real.”

“That’s exactly what I said.”

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

The evening breeze moved across the porch.

Somewhere beyond the fields, a tractor hummed in the distance.

The ordinary sounds of our family farm suddenly felt almost impossible beside the papers in my lap.

I picked up the leather journal.

The first pages had been torn out.

The entries that remained were short.
