Part 2 of 3

“What happened?”

Megan stepped forward.

“Not today, Daniel.”

Something in her voice convinced him not to push.

He left the stuffed bear beside the door and walked back to his truck.

A week after Noah’s arrival, the test results came through.

I opened the file at Megan’s kitchen table.

Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.

Andrew was Noah’s biological father.

Relief lasted perhaps three seconds.

Then came anger.

I forwarded him the report without writing a single sentence.

Forty-five minutes later, Andrew was standing outside Megan’s house.

He looked as though he had barely slept.

“Claire, I’m sorry.”

I crossed my arms.

“You should be.”

“I was wrong. Completely wrong.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the living room, where Noah was sleeping.

“Can I see him?”

I did not move.

“First answer something.”

“Anything.”

“If Noah is yours, why does he have Daniel’s birthmark?”

Andrew’s expression changed again.

This time it was not anger.

It was fear.

I handed him his phone.

“Call Daniel.”

Daniel answered after several rings.

Andrew put the call on speaker.

“The mark on your lower back,” Andrew said. “Where did it come from?”

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel asked,

“Does Noah have it?”

Andrew looked at me.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

When Daniel spoke again, his voice sounded older.

“Then I think it’s time you came over.”

Andrew frowned.

“Why?”

“Because there’s something your father asked me never to tell you.”

The Folder on the Table

Daniel lived twenty-five minutes away in a quiet neighborhood outside Dublin.

Noah slept through most of the drive while Andrew gripped the steering wheel with both hands.

Daniel opened his door before we knocked.

He was holding a brown folder.

We sat around his dining table, and he placed it between us.

Inside were several old documents and a faded photograph.

Andrew picked up the picture.

His father, Walter, appeared in it as a young man standing beside a woman none of us recognized. She was holding an infant.

“Who is she?” Andrew asked.

Daniel swallowed.

“My mother.”

Andrew stared at him.

“Why is my father standing with your mother?”

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Because Walter was my father too.”

Andrew stood so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.

“That isn’t funny.”

“I’m not joking.”

Daniel pushed an old record toward him.

The story came slowly after that.

Years before Walter married Andrew’s mother, he had been involved with Daniel’s mother, Rebecca. By the time she learned she was expecting a baby, Walter was already preparing to marry someone else.

Rebecca moved away quietly.

Daniel grew up believing another version of the story until, at seventeen, his mother finally told him the truth.

He found Walter.

Walter did not deny it.

“He saw my birthmark,” Daniel explained. “That’s what convinced him I really was his son. He had the same crescent. So did his father. Apparently it shows up in some of the men in that side of the family.”

Andrew slowly sat back down.

“I don’t have it.”

“Inheritance doesn’t work like a photocopier,” Daniel said gently. “Some people get certain traits. Some don’t.”

Andrew looked at him for a long time.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“Because your father asked me not to.”

Andrew’s voice rose.

“And you listened?”

Daniel looked away.

“I was seventeen. I had spent my whole life wondering who my father was. Suddenly I found him, and he was asking me for one thing.”

Walter had told Daniel that revealing the truth would humiliate Andrew’s mother and destroy Andrew’s relationship with him. He encouraged Daniel to remain Andrew’s friend but never explain why he felt so connected to their family.

It was a selfish arrangement.

Yet to a seventeen-year-old boy longing for some connection to his father, it had felt better than having nothing.

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I know I should have told you years ago.”

Andrew stared at the photograph.

“All this time you were my brother.”

Daniel nodded.

“Half brother.”

Then he looked at me.

“And Claire, I need you to hear this clearly. Nothing inappropriate ever happened between us. I helped because you were family, even if you didn’t know it.”

Suddenly dozens of small memories changed meaning.

Daniel at Walter’s memorial service, standing near the back instead of with us.

Daniel quietly helping Andrew repair his father’s garage after Walter was gone.

Daniel always making time for our daughters.

He had not simply been Andrew’s oldest friend.
