Five Years Ago, The Man I Loved Handed Me Money And Asked Me To Walk Away From Our Unborn Twins—Last Weekend, He Saw Their Gray Eyes In A Crowded Mall, While His Mother Realized The Two-Million-Dollar Secret She Had Hidden Was About To Destroy Everything

Part 2 of 3

“Take the money,” she said calmly. “Start over somewhere else.”

I looked down at the number.

Then I looked directly into her eyes.

“You think money can solve everything.”

“Money solves most things.”

“Not this.”

She folded her hands neatly in front of her.

“You have no idea how many lives would be affected if this became public.”

“Including your grandson’s lives?”

For the first time, something flickered across her face.

It disappeared almost immediately.

“This is the best solution for everyone.”

I stood.

“No, Mrs. Callahan. It’s the easiest solution for you.”

Then I left.

I never saw her again.

Until now.

The Secret I Protected

Back inside the shopping mall, Preston finally managed to speak.

“Caroline.”

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

Lucas looked up at me.

“Mom, who is he?”

I glanced at Preston.

Five years of memories flooded through my mind.

Long nights comforting two crying infants.

Doctor appointments.

Birthday parties.

School activities.

Bedtime stories.

Every beautiful moment he had willingly missed.

I smiled gently at my sons.

“No one you need to worry about.”

Pain crossed Preston’s face instantly.

“Please wait.”

I stopped walking but didn’t turn around.

Then he asked the question that had clearly been burning inside him from the moment he saw them.

“Are they my children?”

My fingers tightened around the boys’ hands.

Before I could answer, another voice interrupted us.

“Preston!”

I froze.

I would have recognized that voice anywhere.

Eleanor Callahan.

The Truth Finally Appears

Eleanor approached us quickly.

Time had added silver strands to her hair, but her expression remained as controlled as ever.

Then she saw the boys.

The confidence vanished from her face.

Her eyes widened.

Liam tilted his head curiously.

“Mom, why does that lady look so scared?”

Neither Preston nor I answered.

Eleanor forced a smile.

“Caroline, it’s been a long time.”

“Not long enough.”

Her gaze shifted toward the twins.

“They’re beautiful children.”

“I know.”

Preston turned toward his mother.

“You knew, didn’t you?”

She immediately straightened her shoulders.

“This isn’t the place for such a conversation.”

“Answer me.”

She remained silent.

His voice grew stronger.

“You told me Caroline had chosen to leave.”

Again, silence.

“You told me she never wanted children.”
