“But he didn’t read the papers, did he?”

My stomach tightened.

“Why would you say that?”

Caroline looked toward her sister.

“I heard Dad talking to Uncle Derek last week.”

I waited.

“He said he didn’t care where we lived because Vanessa’s baby needed the bigger bedroom.”

Lucy stopped drawing.

“My bedroom?”

Caroline’s face fell.

She hadn’t meant for Lucy to hear that part.

Lucy loved her room.

Especially the glow-in-the-dark stars across the ceiling that she counted whenever thunderstorms frightened her.

“Was Dad giving my room to the baby?”

I pulled her closer.

“You have a new room waiting for you with me.”

“But my stars are there.”

“We’ll get new stars.”

She leaned against me.

Caroline closed her book.

“I don’t want to see him.”

Lucy whispered, “Me neither.”

I didn’t persuade them otherwise.

Their father had spent months making choices.

Now they were allowed to make one.

The Word That Finally Made Him Listen

I returned to the phone.

“They don’t want to come outside.”

Nolan immediately became defensive.

“What did you tell them?”

“Nothing. Caroline heard you talking about giving Lucy’s room to Vanessa’s baby.”

He went silent.

Then I heard Patricia in the background.

“Children misunderstand adult conversations.”

I almost laughed.

“What exactly did she misunderstand?”

Patricia began explaining that family circumstances had changed.

Of course they had.

Yesterday, Vanessa’s baby had been the future of the Mercer family.

Today, there was a question about who the father was.

Suddenly Caroline and Lucy mattered again.

Someone approached behind me.

“Colonel Whitmore, transportation is ready for final manifest confirmation.”

Nolan heard every word.

The phone went completely silent.

Then:

“Colonel?”

I almost smiled.

“Yes.”

“You’re a colonel?”

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

“Three years ago.”

Another silence.

“You never told me.”

That finally made me angry.

“I invited you to my promotion ceremony.”

He said nothing.

“You skipped it because you were playing golf.”

“I thought it was just some military ceremony.”

“It was. Mine.”

His breathing changed.

“Why didn’t you tell me what rank you were getting?”

“I did.”

“I don’t remember that.”

“That’s the problem, Nolan. You don’t remember because you weren’t listening.”

For the first time that day, he had no argument.

Then he asked quietly, “What do you actually do?”

I looked around the secure building.

People I had served beside were preparing equipment and reviewing documents.

My work wasn’t something I needed to prove to Nolan anymore.

“It matters to the people who depend on me.”

His voice became almost unrecognizable.

“I guess I never really knew you.”

“No,” I said. “You didn’t.”

The Secret Vanessa Couldn’t Keep

Twenty minutes before departure, I received a message from Vanessa.

I nearly deleted it.

Then I read the second line.

Nolan doesn’t know who the other man is.

The third message contained a name.

Ethan Mercer.

Nolan’s cousin.

I stared at the screen.

Ethan worked for the Mercer family’s real-estate company.

He was married.

He had children.

And suddenly I understood why Vanessa had been reluctant to tell Nolan everything.

This wasn’t simply a relationship problem anymore.

It threatened the polished image Nolan’s family had spent years protecting.

I called Vanessa.

“Tell me the truth.”

She started crying.

“Ethan and I were together before Nolan and I became official.”

“Nolan was still married to me.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan was married too?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

Then she revealed something even more surprising.

Nolan’s father already knew.

Ethan had apparently told him months earlier.

Instead of telling Nolan, his father had encouraged everyone to stay quiet until they could determine who the baby’s father was.

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Because Nolan is blaming you.”

I went still.

“For what?”

“He keeps saying none of this would be happening if you hadn’t left.”

Something inside me finally became completely calm.

“Listen carefully, Vanessa. I didn’t create your choices. I didn’t create Nolan’s choices. I didn’t create his family’s secrets. And I’m not going to become the person who fixes everything now that those secrets are coming apart.”

She whispered, “I’m sorry.”

“Then start being honest with the people who actually need the truth.”

I ended the call.

The Three Words That Came Too Late

At 4:25 p.m., Caroline, Lucy, and I boarded the aircraft.

Lucy chose the window seat.

Caroline sat beside her.

My phone vibrated before departure.

Nolan.

Three messages.

The first said he knew about Ethan.

The second said his father had admitted knowing.

The third contained only three words.

Please don’t leave.

I stared at them.

For eleven years, I had stayed.
